Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

@captpaul8827
@captpaul8827 3 жыл бұрын
@@MichiganRocks I know I'll catch flak from this, but to me they are a form of Chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz) with inclusions of manganese or iron oxides. The different colours come from different valence states and/or inclusions of additional metals such as chrome, vanadium, etc. In these Mexican moss agates, I would suspect the red comes from iron and the black comes from manganese. They tend to be form from weathered volcanic rocks. Turritella agate is not a true agate either, but a fossiliferous rock that forms in the Green River Formation of Wyoming. Interestingly, the snail that makes up the patterns in these rocks is not of the marine Turritella species however, but a fresh water species from the Eocene. While the fossils are found in many types of rock from the Green River, it is usually only the harder silicified rocks (chalcedony) that is of interest to lapidarists. The Formation itself is probably more famous for its abundance of exceptionally well preserved fish fossils.
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 жыл бұрын
@@captpaul8827 Thanks Paul. That makes me feel better about the Rocks in a Box video I recorded last week that hasn't been published yet. I stated that Turritella agates were misnamed in two ways: It's not an agate, and it's not the correct fossil name.

No resin is used here. These are hard, 7 on the Mohs scale according to The Rock Shed. Harder rocks typically polish easier than softer rock.

The loss varies depending on how deeply pitted the rocks are. This was probably above average for me. The end result was worth the loss in my opinion.

Hi, great videos, how shiny are the rocks when they come out of the tumbler. Do you hand polish to get that amazing shine. Do you have any videos on the tumble to shine process. Many thanks Scotty

The rocks are exactly as shiny as they look in the video when they come out of the tumbler. I have three videos showing different ways to tumble. I almost always use a combination of rotary and vibratory tumbling. These three videos show my methods from favorite to least favorite: Rotary tumbler followed by vibratory tumbler: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaTVnqOGj9d0q7c Rotary tumbler with ceramics: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moqqd5SiZcpkjbs Rotary tumbler with plastic pellets: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5-xp6ytrN-nqJo

Have you ever tried a real aggressive grit like say 36 grit? If so how did it do? Just wondering about trying some myself and thought I’d ask?
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 2 жыл бұрын
I typically use 46/70. I do have some 36/70, but I haven't used it yet. You could probably get away with letting larger grit run a little longer before it broke down all the way. If you try it, I'd open the barrel after a week and feel the grit with my fingers. If it still feels grainy, throw it back in for another few days and check again.

Two days in a Lot-O with 1/2 teaspoon of aluminum oxide polish and a tablespoon of borax. If you'd like to see the process I used with these, it's in this video. The video is long, but if you just want the recipe, it's in the description. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaTVnqOGj9d0q7c If you only have a rotary tumbler, I'd suggest this method: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moqqd5SiZcpkjbs

@MichiganRocks

I don't know, but it's probably a crack in the rock that was filled with a white mineral. It polished well, so it's a hard mineral, maybe quartz.

I think moss agate is not really an agate but just called that. The reasons for this are simple enough for me. Moss agate is formed from sio2, silicon dioxide, so is chalcedony, but agate is formed from chalcedony. Same mother different dad's, kind of thing. Follow me here, quarts is made from sio2, chalcedony is formed from quartz, moss agate is formed from sio2, and moss agate has no banding, what do you think
@MichiganRocks
@MichiganRocks 3 жыл бұрын
I really don't know. Some people say that agates have to have bands. But there are a lot of rocks out there commonly called agates that are not banded. Montana agate is a good example. I don't know enough to make an educated argument either way. There are some rocks called agates that are clearly not agates, like Turritella agate for example. That one I do have an opinion on.

@@TheRogueRockhound Turritella agate is a sedimentary rock. It's a bunch of little snails that fell to the bottom of a lake and formed a sedimentary rock. I don't think sedimentary rocks can be agates. I just wrote the above and was going to link to an article to back up my point, but after rereading the article, I see that the author does refer to Turritella as an agate. geology.com/gemstones/turritella/ So then I read this debate between people who know a lot more than I do. They're referring to a different type of agate, and the discussions gets kind of confusing. www.mindat.org/mesg-307218.html I still don't feel like Turritella is an agate, but I'm not a geologist and what I feel isn't all that important. What I'm worried about now is the Rocks in a Box video that I have already recorded where I say that Turritella is not an agate. I hope I don't have to redo that video to avoid spreading false information.
@TheRogueRockhound
@TheRogueRockhound 3 жыл бұрын
@@MichiganRocks Sir, I don't think you should be worried about that; I think people trust you and would be interested to hear the debate regarding Turritella. If you feel you may be at risk of spreading false geological information, put an "appendix" in the description or do a quick edit to notify the viewers of the ongoing classification debate. Really, this could be an opportunity to make a video explaining in greater detail what is going on with Turritella. I know if I hadn't watched your video and then read some comments, I would have not known about Turritella, nor would I have spent the time to read more. Your dedication is commendable sir.
