In this Big Think video, Dr. Michio Kaku explains why he believes in a universal intelligence and describes "God" as a mathematician and as “cosmic music.” “I have concluded that we are in a world made by rules created by an intelligence,” Kaku says. “To me it is clear that we exist in a plan which is governed by rules that were created, shaped by a universal intelligence and not by chance.” “The final solution resolution could be that god is a mathematician,” says Kaku. “The mind of god, we believe, is cosmic music. Dr. Michio Kaku is the co-founder of string field theory, and is one of the most widely recognized scientists in the world today. He has written 4 New York Times Best Sellers, is the science correspondent for CBS This Morning and has hosted numerous science specials for BBC-TV, the Discovery/Science Channel. His radio show broadcasts to 100 radio stations every week. Dr. Kaku holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York (CUNY), where he has taught for over 25 years. He has also been a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study as well as New York University (NYU).

Michio Kaku: Some people ask the question of what good is math? What is the relationship between math and physics? Well, sometimes math leads. Sometimes physics leads. Sometimes they come together because, of course, there’s a use for the mathematics. For example, in the 1600s Isaac Newton asked a simple question: if an apple falls then does the moon also fall? That is perhaps one of the greatest questions ever asked by a member of Homo sapiens since the six million years since we parted ways with the apes. If an apple falls, does the moon also fall?
Isaac Newton said yes, the moon falls because of the Inverse Square Law. So does an apple. He had a unified theory of the heavens, but he didn't have the mathematics to solve the falling moon problem. So what did he do? He invented calculus. So calculus is a direct consequence of solving the falling moon problem. In fact, when you learn calculus for the first time, what is the first thing you do? The first thing you do with calculus is you calculate the motion of falling bodies, which is exactly how Newton calculated the falling moon, which opened up celestial mechanics.
So here is a situation where math and physics were almost conjoined like Siamese twins, born together for a very practical question, how do you calculate the motion of celestial bodies? Then here comes Einstein asking a different question and that is, what is the nature and origin of gravity? Einstein said that gravity is nothing but the byproduct of curved space. So why am I sitting in this chair? A normal person would say I'm sitting in this chair because gravity pulls me to the ground, but Einstein said no, no, no, there is no such thing as gravitational pull; the earth has curved the space over my head and around my body, so space is pushing me into my chair. So to summarize Einstein's theory, gravity does not pull; space pushes. But, you see, the pushing of the fabric of space and time requires differential calculus. That is the language of curved surfaces, differential calculus, which you learn in fourth year calculus.
So again, here is a situation where math and physics were very closely combined, but this time math came first. The theory of curved surfaces came first. Einstein took that theory of curved surfaces and then imported it into physics.
Now we have string theory. It turns out that 100 years ago math and physics parted ways. In fact, when Einstein proposed special relativity in 1905, that was also around the time of the birth of topology, the topology of hyper-dimensional objects, spheres in 10, 11, 12, 26, whatever dimension you want, so physics and mathematics parted ways. Math went into hyperspace and mathematicians said to themselves, aha, finally we have found an area of mathematics that has no physical application whatsoever. Mathematicians pride themselves on being useless. They love being useless. It's a badge of courage being useless, and they said the most useless thing of all is a theory of differential topology and higher dimensions.

Teachers .Pet I'll tell you why, Kaku is refering to God in a very abstract almost poetic representation regarding the point of origin in the universe. The sum of all things. Essentially you might say it's the God of the gaps, but I do think using religious imagery to paint a picture of all these magnificent things in the universe is an effective tool to spark imagination. Yeah there are people who will choose to misinterpret it but that will always be the case. When I said earlier that God is both a mathematician and a musician, I'm not necessarily referring to a specific deity, rather I'm expressing the beauty of the intricacy's I see in the Universe. Of course if there literally is a God, then it would seem to me like a very accurate representation. Now I'm what you might call a progressive Christian. I do on a personal level believe in a higher power, but rather than the very traditional image of an omnipotent being, I tend to be of the mind that God is omnipresent and I think that knowing what we know regarding the universe, it's a much more likely scenario, but again, that's just the way I tend to see things, bu when talking about the universe, I feel like you're always going to stumble into some abstract territory.

Well, it's not the whole mind of God. It's the artistry of God, and His desire to give us a heaven not only filled with wonders to ponder, but with such depth interconnected with the shallow that the shallow catches our attention, and the depth discovered draws us continuously deeper into the definition of His creation and the truth of the utter magnificence of the artistry of His work. That is, fundamentally, why He told us to subdue the earth, and as we do, we obey the will of God and bring glory to Him. In the end, it's not going to matter what people say who don't want to believe in God. In fact, whether or not that even matters to society is subject to radical change at any given period of time. 50 to 100 years from now, society may be taking what we have learned and reveling in its demonstration of the glory of God. Humankind changes. But the glory of God is still seen and remains discovered throughout our changes. God is one that reaps what He does not sow, harvests what He does not plant, and uses both the righteous and the unrighteous for His glory.

Yeah, I understand. I think people may have up-voted my comment only because what it implies is that those of us with at least some degree of curiosity about the workings of the universe or any kind of truth within it or about it are superior to the herd, more god-like or something. Yes, it's true I was born to religious parents and had a very religious friend for a while. I've broken free of that mindset for good now and cannot go back, just as I broke free of mainstream political viewpoints and can never view the the presidency or government in general the same ever again. I'm currently in the process of examining free will vs. determinism. I know that he was just using the term "God" to describe something very abstract, but I firmly believe that God really created the universe, which would take a massive amount of creativity and ingenuity to do. It's rather easy. Not one of the religions can claim a LIVE God. Christianity, having such, can only therefore honestly be described as a way of life. The rest never claim resurrection. Richard Dawkins tried to make that same case, until he was told that he'd never recognize evidence, since he had closed his eyes to it. You have done the same thing. Until you broach that line between honest search and your own predilections, you will wander in the same vacuum. You grow up and we might have a starting point. (note that Dr Hawking has come to the same conclusion as Kaku)

+bucu2003 Noone is talking about god - even Kaku means it allegorically. That we are now finding the very fundamentals of the universe. It doesn't mean a sentient god that you imagine it to be. It doesn't have to be organic, living, thinking, intelligent, anything like that. Just the collection of the most basic materials. And here come people saying really cringing things like "ermm god spoke, so ya, vibration make sense". After the fact, of course. After science does all the work to hint at string theory, only for religious to reap the rewards in a desperate attempt.
