Lower Lakes/ Grand River/ Rand doesn’t take care of their ships like they used to. Now they run them until they are scrap. I only wound of the future of the ASC boats now that Rand bought them. You never see an Interlake boat look like that.
@jamesbraun98426 ай бұрын
According to great lakes historian Wes Ozwelski this isn't the first time Michipicoten had cracked. The same thing happened when it was owned by Interlake as Elton Hoyt ii. (Which was sold in 2001). At the time the industry was still healthy so they needed it back as soon as possible. (Many times mid season repairs were half ass jobs and patch work meant to get to the end of the season or short term solutions to keep the boat going.

Looking forward to seeing her in Duluth, and seeing how she does. Hopefully she can come back, or is she can’t that they can use her to repair other ships such as Cuyahoga. I’m guessing they’ll wait for calmer weather to depart, which will likely be early next week, make the trip as easy as possible. But we’ll see.
@redeyedmongoose29636 ай бұрын
That hulk should’ve been scrapped decades ago even considering putting it back on the water should be brought down by the Maritime workers union. No one should have to serve on that ship.
@jonathanellsworth216 ай бұрын
@@redeyedmongoose2963 for what reasons? Just because of age? 72 isn’t all that old for a Great Lakes freighter. The oldest hull sailing the lakes is 118 years old right now and still going strong. There are dozens of vessels remaining from the 50s, which for the most part are in great shape and have been upgraded many times in their lifetimes. If the vessel is repairable she very well could sail for decades more and it would be far from unheard of. Many lakers have been through worse than this. The Lakes are not the oceans.
@jamesbraun98426 ай бұрын
@jonathanellsworth21 Exactly, everyone keeps saying 72 years old, too long, age is the problem, etc. The problem is lack of maintenance. (The Alpena, Kaye E. Barker, Wilfred Sykes, to name a few, are still sailing).

There's an interview with Red Burgner cook from the Fitzgerald* who said he told the company he was gonna pop the tarp and sleep in a lifeboat. I think he was concerned Captain Mcsorely was too much of a rough weather captain. The video of his interview is embedded in a Ric Mixter presentation. * Red was not the cook when she sank in case that was unclear...

Sadly I fear that this is going to be her second to the last voyage, with her last being to the ship breakers in Canada. She is gettin to old to keep repairing and on the lakes. And it will come down to a cost to benefit decision , that is going to do her in. Killed by accountant/s
