Humble brag: That first "woohoo" was me. Was there with my family including my 4 yr old who we had to get out of bed so she could come see her favorite ship make it back safe. Whatever the future may hold 'Mitch-chip' (how she pronounces it - her cat's name is Chip), we're all glad you made it back safe!!

Yeah, probably a white knuckle trip for the crew. She certainly did her job and even if this is it, she’s sailed probably 3 times longer than your average ocean ship. All we can do is wait and see what happens.

Warmed my heart. Glad the old girl made it across the lake. If metal fatigue caused the incident, then who knows where else on the hull it is fatigued. Hopefully they can go over the hull and crop and renew any and all bad spots. Fingers crossed she sails again.

@@robbhahn8897 potentially, following this incident I could see her taking water in through the bottom of the hull and causing the ship to list. Except in the storm and all the rolling they may not have noticed. Then the iron ore inside her shifts after a big wave and that’s that. Wonder if that scenario was ever modeled?

As a former scuba diver in Thunder Bay, it was amazing to see her come into port listing so bad. Things could have gone horribly wrong, but a shout out to the Canadian coast guard and other crews that helped stabilize her enough to get into the port of Thunder Bay. Glad everyone is safe. She is such a beautiful, graceful old laker! I'm glad she made it back safe and, hopefully, sound. Time will tell. She'd be sorely missed by the fleet and all her friends, if she doesn't make it. Thank you, Johnathan, for letting us watch this grand old lady return to port. Just had a thought. If she can't sail again, could she be saved at a museum? That would be a fitting end to a long career on the lakes.

As a kid we vacationed in Little Current Ont. back in the 50s, we stayed in cabins on the north channel, I remember the freighters coming through the channel at a point were they had to make a slight right turn and even at 6 or 7 I would stand on that point as the ships went by I swear I felt as though I could almost reach out and touch them, the wake would make me jump back, they were really close, scary exciting as a child, what a great memory.

The hard labor and dedication to their craft speaks well of the efforts made. They should all take pride as to how long this magnificent vessel did its job. A testament to how well this ship was built and others like her. God bless all the captains and crews operating these massive cargo ships. An example of what has made America such a strong nation. Is there a reason that barges and tugs aren't used on the Great Lakes ? I know they have ocean going barges and of course lots of them on the Mississippi River. Would seem to be a lot cheaper to make large barges and big tugs to push/pull them than build a thousand foot ship but maybe they don't work on the lakes because of conditions/weather. I'm just curious and have obviously I have no experience or knowledge of any of this. Nice work on the video.

No, it’s an inspection and repair yard, plus they can build small vessels. Duluth does have a scrapyard but I’ve never seen anything this size go there. That said if the ship is so fragile that even taking her through the Soo Locks is a bad idea, they might not have any choice.

Tradition from back in the sailing days. The ships would often have a female figurehead on the bow and an all male crew. So “He” would be the captain, “She” would be the ship, both because of the figurehead and because the ship carried and protected them from the seas, like a mother carrying children. Calling a ship “It” was sort of an insult to the ship among sailors, implying the vessel was unreliable and unworthy of being a part of the crew’s family. It’s gotten less strict over the years but the traditions still remain

We as American's must not allow this great great lakes freighter the s.s. michipicicoten to be scrapped let's see 👀 this great self-unloading freighter turned into a floating museum-ship and not a big pile of scrap steel, let's save this great lakes freighter the very same way that the s.s. valley camp was saved and then was turned into a floating museum-ship for all in this great country of the United state's of America 🇺🇸 to come and visit as well as tour let's not let the michipicton's days on the great lakes end up becoming a pile of scrap steel because as of this very minute we here in America 🇺🇸 and 🇺🇸 on our great lakes do not have a great lakes self-unloading great lakes freighter as a floating museum-ship for everyone to visit and tour see and enjoy I know that we can't save every great lakes freighter on the great lakes as a floating museum-ship but we can save a few to represent the other great lakes freighter's whose great lakes careers have ended after so many years of hauling freight of all kinds and in the very end ended up going right straight to the scrapyard and then also ended up being scrapped, but this ship 🚢 has a very special and loved soul which we as citizens of the great state of Michigan must help to preserve her the very same way that the s.s. valley camp and several other great lakes freighter's were saved and then turned or converted into great lakes floating museum-ship's to preserve our great lakes heritage for all of Americans and Canadians as well as the rest of the people around the world 🌎 to visit and tour as well does anybody agree with me on this please if you agree with me on this please respond and reply back to me on this question?........ .❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊.

@@jamess.merritt5353 I’d love to save some ships! I’m saving my efforts for Arthur M Anderson and Lee A Tregurtha though, those two ships have insane historical significance. As for Michipicoten, she’s a Canadian vessel currently so it would probably be up to the Canadians to decide that! So far it appears there’s no interest in scrapping her, but they’re really not giving details either. All I do know is they repaired the main crack but other issues popped up that need to be addressed. Currently she’s just sitting and has been for a month or so, but still powered up and flags flying.

If they were going to scrap her she wouldn’t have gone to Fraser.

So what we know that thier is a crack in this great lakes freighter's hull but the cracked hull plate or hull plates can easily be repaired or replaced and if this great lakes freighter's lake career is to come to an end then let it come to an end as a floating museum-ship and not a big pile of scrap steel, this is just the way that I feel about it please respond back with the way that all of you great lakes freighter fan's feel about saving this great lakes freighter from becoming a huge pile of scrap steel and instead turning this great freighter the s.s. michipicoten into a self-unloading freighter into a floating museum-ship for all to come and see 👀 as well as touring because I would like to see 👀 and have a great lakes self-unloading freighter as a floating museum-ship and tourist attraction for all to visit and see 👀 not for this grand and fine ship to end her days instead as a huge pile of scrap steel does anybody agree with me on this if so please reply and respond back with your answer........ .

As a merchant seaman, I sincerely hope this is her last trip. She could EASILY be on the bottom with all hands right now.

Yeah, we’ll see what inspectors say. It’s far from the worst thing many Great Lakes ships have gone through, the only real difference is it happened on the open water, plus the amount of publicity. They’ve brought ships back from worse and they’re fairly strict here in Duluth. We’ll see what option they go with

It's amazing what shipyards and steelworkers can do. They will scan every inch of that hull, from keel to deck. If cost repairs are effective to the company she'll sail again. If not, it's to the boneyard. Many boats through the years have gotten cracks, broken backs and groundings that had productive years after. I think she'll be back out imo, she's a workhorse!

Suffering stress fractures in the hull? I would certainly hope it was her last trip. No insurance company should cover this ship. That would guarantee that she would be put out of service, and no crew will die to corporate greed.

Perhaps. But Great Lakes ship builders are the best in the business. If anyone could bring it back like new, they could. There are ships that have been through this and far worse even decades ago and sail without any issues today. But we’ll see how widespread the issue is on the ship. It could go either way at this point
