I used to dislike the Gradius series because of its, at first, convoluted upgrade system, as well as its borderline unfair difficulty, with it being incredibly hard for you to power yourself back up when you respawn after you die, to the point where you might as well start the game over after you lose once... But it all changed after I got into the PC-98, a ton of the good games on the system use the exact same upgrade system as the Gradius series, so I obviously had to adapt, because otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get into much more than just Valkyrie, Touhou and Kotsujin...
After I had warmed up to that powerup system I went back to the Gradius series and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I was enjoying myself! The games are GOOD! They're a lot of fun, even if you might still want to start over after you die once, but I sure have a blast trying to get somewhere in these games! (Which I hardly can at all but still)
Gradius III on the SNES is one of the more approachable and forgiving games on the series, it's one where you actually have a shot at powering yourself back up after you die, so the lives are actually worth a damn in this game, and if you put in the time you can easily get quite far in this game! Well, it certainly helps that it actually has an easy mode, on which I'm playing in this footage (don't judge me it's Gradius, this stuff is hard!)
It's a great game too! One which unfortunately not a lot of people seem to talk about anymore, which is a shame...
It's got great graphics and a spectacular soundtrack, and I'd expect no less from the SNES!
The only negative thing I could say about this game is that it slows down a lot, like A LOT! I mean, most of the time you'll be playing this game in slow-motion, but considering how hectic it can get even at that low speed, and the sheer amount of sprites the game is putting on-screen, and also the fact that this is a launch title, you know, a time where they weren't particularly familiar with the hardware, then it's all forgivable...
As for the song itself, the original only used 6 channels and one of them was just doing delay/reverb duty, you know what this means? That I didn't have to drop anything~ It was the PERFECT song to cover on the PC engine! Nothing was dropped, nothing had to be shifted around, it's all in here, and it's all as it should be, and even if this was put in a real PC engine game, no meaningful musical detail would be lost in order to play sound effects because only the delay/reverb would have to be cut off for that, which is already the goal of my PCE music to begin with!
This was so much fun to do~
I REALLY wanna cover more Konami music, like you know, Gradius, TwinBee (♥OMG I LOVE TWINBEE MUSIC♥) maybe even Castlevania, who knows? (I'll most likely just do more TwinBee)
