Another amateur mistake: The tractor started in -40*C is a T-170 heavy tractor, not a DT75. Nothing like starting old school Diesel engines. I used to have a diesel LandRover from the 60’s, I ran a block heater, oil pan heater and battery charger for 2 hrs off a Honda generator before trying to start it in a Canadian winter.

Sehr gute Idee, einen kalten Motor direkt hochzujagen. Da freut sich der Turbo...

The great thing about having a pup motor for turning over and starting the primary engine is you don't have to worry about burning out a starter!

Several of these drivers are letting go of the key too soon and not letting the starter do its job. Especially w/ diesels with faulty glow plugs, the cranking slowly builds up heat in the upper cylinder area, and that valuable heat is lost in a few seconds by prematurely stopping the cranking. It is also hard on the battery using multiple cranks due to the incredible load placed on the battery to get the engine turning from a standstill. These diesel starters are heavy duty and are manufactured with the expectation of prolonged crank times - sometimes up to a minute. Owners of diesels must keep their batteries fresh and filters changed and use wintertime diesel with the antigel added for good measure. For old diesels with reduced compression, a shot of "get up and go" spray will speed things along, but I personally believe these sprays accelerate ring wear, esp. for someone who sprays so liberally, like he just took a dump and was using air freshener.

Best way to start a semi . TAKE OUT THE AIR FILTER ! Get a steel rod tie a rag on & dip in Diesel fuel squeeze it out light it let the induction suck in the flame in as a helper hits the starter . Not suitable for small cars .

In my humble opinion EV's won't solve anything. I think you know very well about battery production (and mining materials for them), recycling, and other issues like absolutely not-eco-friendly production of electrical energy in many, many places. I'm a massive car lover and I love IC engines but I'm not an anti-EV-zombie either, I'm just a real thinking person. Wouldn't mind having some simple EV myself to take those 2-3 km strolls to friends' houses or a 7km stroll to the nearest town for shopping and stuff - ICEs don't like being run constantly without reaching operating temp - EV won't mind. But if I needed to hop in and go on a 1000km journey, I'll choose a fuel sipping turbodiesel that will do this on one tank rather than screw around with an EV. Everything has it's time and place. Anyway, the problem aren't even EVs themselves, the problem are the morons up there PUSHING and FORCING people to SCRAP and RECYCLE their old, PERFECTLY GOOD cars and KEEP BUYING new stuff as often as possible, therefore producing MUCH MORE UNNECESSARY WASTE and KILLING THE PLANET. Simple. This is exactly contrary to reducing footprint. An old car being run for 20-30 years* is wayyyy less of a nuisance to mother Earth than 5 new cars, ICE or EV doesn't matter, produced in the same time. Also gassers can run on alcohols and diesels can run on waste oils. Be it used vegetable oil from french fries or a mix of waste engine and gearbox oils. The vegetable oil's "ecofriendliness" is not even a question. Running on waste motor oils etc. will be probably more ecofriendly than using ordinary diesel fuel specifically produced only and only to run diesel engines. Provided the diesel engine is tuned up to burn the alternate fuels as thoroughly as possible and doesn't leave a greasy smokey trail of half-burned oil behind it. Incomplete combustion of most things creates much, much worse substances than complete combustion, from what I remember from primary school chemistry :D Last but not least, unfortunately the most deadly sh*t is usually invisible and has no smell, like carbon monoxide. *Unless the old car, I don't know, dumps a litre of engine oil on the ground everyday and burns another litre through the rings, but who would keep a car like that without having it fixed? Nobody, it's not economically viable to drive something like that. For me, dream "fleet" is a built street 9000+rpm monster running on alcohol, daily driving diesel running on waste oils and I wouldn't mind a simple cheap EV (...those don't even really exist) to cover the really short distances. Don't even care about the new EVs haha, would be very sound with something like a Peugeot 106 Electrique from almost 30 years ago.

Soot from diesels is pretty harmless to the environment. It just falls out of the air really quickly. What you are seeing in these videos is unburnt diesel, not soot. Also fuck your eco crap

Keep in mind the majority of these starts are also from machines over 50-60 years old lol. The majority of mass transit and general machinery nowadays runs a hell of a lot cleaner than your 8V92 in a crackerbox GMC Astro. Nevertheless, for those areas its gonna need a lot more than just a bus with a battery pack. Rails will be where the future of mass transit and heavy transport lies, apart from the fact electric locomotives are a technology over a century old!
