A good way to trim that top truss is too draw a straight line then set the skill saw to the depth of the line and cut into the line leaving thin slices of wood which can be easily chipped out hope this helps 😊

the foundational aspect of construction is the multiplication of error. 1/16 out of level across two feet in the base of a column results in tremendous deviation from plumb 200' in the air. the saying 'sharpen your pencil' has significant importance in what you are doing... the best you can do is to minimize your errors, that can be achieved at a fundamental level by using a sharp pencil and accurate layout technique.

What you need is the angle brackets that are on a flat plane, instead of a flat bar bent at an angle. Then you screw to the stud and put 2x2 and screw it to the brackets where it is out on the floor. Then screw your plywood to those 2x2 (or whatever size) strapping. Maximum strength met.

I like to see those landscapes every time 👍. Here in Finland, the window installation opening is made about 20 mm larger than the window. The window is placed in the opening with wedges and fixed with urethane foam. The 10 mm gap around the window is filled with foam. The wedges can be removed the next day and foam can be added in their place. The installation is therefore air and vapor tight. There seems to be a slightly different way, if I understood correctly (I understand about 60% of the speech, so I try to guess the rest). Greetings from Finland. Thank you for the video.

Good morning Michelle Ernie from NYS. Best of luck to your husband Steve to make a full recovery from knee surgery. 6 1/2 years ago I tripped broke a femur, hip, and have made a full recovery. Steve should follow the Doctor and therapist instructions while exercising everyday. It took me almost a year to make a full recovery through aggressive exercise everyday which I continue to follow.

I would suggest looking for some 45 degree angle shelf brackets or cutting some from wood. That will greatly enhance the strength to just the steel angles. Triangle are strength. You might look into one of those carbide 'cup' type cutter that can go on an angle grinder. They are made for stone and concrete but will cut wood too. They might get into those corners you need to shave for your windows.

Hope Steve's knee heals up fast and easy. re your stove shelf - I would not add another metal bracket - I suggest adding a few plywood gussets (triangular brackets) under the shelf, screwed to the studs. If you make them .62 or .75 x the shelf width front to back that will be plenty stiff and they will not be very visible. Just food for thought. Cheers!

Y'know what might be nice under the woodstove - if you have the time and luck to find it... would be a forked oak or maple limb that would be vertical to the rear and up at an angle under the stove base. That would give you the extra support you need and not be in the way like legs. My grandfather used limbs for lots of stuff in his lakeside cabin - bedposts, shelf supports, etc. Always a great rustic look.

My heart goes out to Steve, I know what he must be feeling. I managed to tear a meniscus in one knee and broke the other while I was in my 20’s. Now that I’m in my 70’s ... ouch! Wishing Steve a speedy recovery. Have you considered leaving the solar panels plugged into the battery system and having them inside, facing out the glass doors. Some power should be captured if only from reflection off the water. I hope you, Steve and your furry pack enjoyed a blessed Thanksgiving Day and another great week filled with gentle seasonally appropriate weather and restful evenings. Greetings from the southeastern shore of the Great Swamp Erie. Peace princess

Greetings! I admire your willingness to tackle just about anything, and you’re creating good results. I would advise either a couple wooden 45-degree supports under the stove shelf, or a single metal brace similar to the current ones, but with its own 45-degree metal brace, located centrally. On your window issue, rather than shaving the downslope, consider shaving the center support. You’d have to figure out whether the center post or the window is out of square, but it might be the post, given you have a gap at the bottom but not the top. And if the window slides left, it solves tightness at the top. You’ll figure out some solution, and it’ll work, but some are easier that others! Good luck and well wishes for Steve’s knee.

Michelle with regards to your windows, you do not want to be cutting away at the beams at the apex of the opening with your chainsaw. Align the vertical edge with the center post, allow a ⅛-¼" space between the glass and the vertical and slope sides, you now want to adjust the sill plate accordingly, ie: cutting it down, it might need to slope. Install your interior window stops before putting the glass in place and place ¼" glass shims at the sill. Once the glass is in place you can install the exterior stops.

Hi 👋, Michelle and Steve, sorry to hear 👂 that Steve as problems with his knee, I wish him well and a speedy recovery, and it is very strange. I was only talking to somebody last week back in the UK., that had an operation on his knee about a year ago and has still got to have a bad problem with it, last week, it was supposed to go and back into keyhole surgery, they’re now saying that it might be more serious not sure what they’re doing, Chipmunk is probably following you up and down the hillside, you’ve gone back up to take some nuts to him, but he was on the way down, oh dear. 😂. I would definitely suggest putting some angle brackets under the shelf that holds the log burner up to give it some more support., especially when you’ve got your logs in it is going to create more weight, the last thing you want is that to fall down with all its fire and ash in board, regarding your angled windows, I believe it will be worth having around 10 mil or thereabouts clearance, allowing for structure, movement during the winter and summer, if I remember, rightly, there is a rubber gasket that you can use to set the glass unit into and that will help for the movement of the building, it must not touch , otherwise the glass shatter under pressure, under pressure, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury , I know a song about that, but I won’t tell you, I know that it is money, but you could put a small wind, turbine. up that will help you to give electricity which will aid for electricity charging, something to think about for the future, it could be installed up or down the hillside, I was speaking to somebody last week, how to get better Internet phone service, this is money again, I know, but you can buy. I believe a booster kit that will help pick up the signal for you to receive., about the 20 years ago I had moved into a very large workshop and had to put a false ceiling in, are use the product that was 150 mil in thickness, but had tinfoil on both sides for thermal installation, it wasn’t until about 2 to 3 days later, and then noticed that I was struggling with my mobile phone and Internet, so I ended up purchasing a booster kit, the aerial was up in the air above the building, but had the main control unit in my workshop area, I had a perfect signal, in fact a lot better than what I had before, even people that are working in my area, had noticed the signal had actually improved, Your power pack system is very impressive, People think that I am a bit weird I probably am, I’ve even been told that I am mentally ill, and yes, I probably am, but if I think I can save money on electricity, I will. I have three rechargeable Milwaukee lantern lights., I want lantern light fully recharged will ask me nearly 2 weeks, so I do not put lights on in my property. If I need to go somewhere, I’ll take the lantern light with me, I can even charge my iPhone and iPad off it, and to heat my hot water, I only switch the power onto it once a week for approximately two hours, then give me enough water, hot for at least one bath and several showers, Since 2019, I have got my electric bill down by nearly 40%, You said you needed some help, I would gladly come and give you a hand for a week or so, or longer, obviously from your location to my location is a little bit far to walk ha ha, 😂 , at present, I cannot afford to do much, because my female ex partner is trying everything she can stop me from getting my funds from the UK, I have been scammed by her, Over the last five or six years, I have noticed on KZbin on the Internet, how loving couples respect and treat each other help one another and stand by one another when there is a problem, you too are so very lucky, I wish Steve speedy recovery, and both of you all the success for the future, Sorry if this is too much information, but I’m only trying to help, Phil from the Dark side of the moulin,

If you have scrap wood left over and during the warmer months, you should consider building a hand rail on that staircase. Again and again, I see the necessity of being physically fit (in a big way) to do what you do alone. To be limber, agile, and capable of some good endurance is perhaps the number one thing that let's you do what you do, often with what seems to be ease. The mental side is equally important, of course, but being fit makes everything else possible. Always fun and informative to watch you take on your projects with a positive attitude.

If you put a second pully on your zipline about three feet behind the first and attach to the first with a pole (to maintain the distance at 3'), you can place materials on the zipline, hooking them to both pulleys, and they will stay aligned with the zipline the entire trip down. You have become a markedly better carpenter than you were two years ago. Well done! Your idea of putting diagonal bracing under the stove base is a good one. It should probably be strong enough for you to stand on- clearly, you wouldn't want a burning stove to have anything less than real solidity under it. I've dealt with gable windows, many times, and I'd encourage you to find another way.

Staying busy is good for the soul when your mind is somewhere else. Also, Steve will be back on his feet in no time. He has the best support team.

Look at getting a Elbow for your stove. Matching your stove pipe diameter. That way you extend your base moving it further away, centring it to pipe and giving it more distance for safety. Add cement board to your floor. With the elbow you can twist turn and line it up. I hope you see my vision?

For the cantilevered stove shelf, you should get flat L brackets rather than then bent ones. They will be better for your purposes and less likely to droop over time. Or use some timber screws to attach the horizontal supports to the inner side of the 2x4 studs. Just a suggestion.

Hi Michelle, definitely tackle the stove area first. Grab some 6 mil poly and cover up the window area, inside and out. Get to it when you can🤷‍♂️ 🙌🥰🤟

I agree with you on the potential additional stability by using another set of brackets under the shelf. I'll be watching.....
