There was a duo that Mick was doing in concert with Bob Brookmeyer. No set list, a lot of it was free improvisation. Bob was playing a series of chords and Mick was hearing the chords, adding a note to augment the chord (this was one of the things Mick did with uncanny skill: hear what was being played and add just the right note to create a harmony from another planet). He was improvising a melody in this way until he realized about a chorus and a half in, that the form was All The Things You Are, Brookmeyer style. It took Mick by surprise and he wondered what he had played BEFORE he "knew" what he was soloing on. What came from his ear before his head knew what he was working with? He listened to the recording afterwords, and he and Bob agreed that it was one of the most inspired, and uncannily spot on but unexpected solos ever on ATTYA. He has one of the most informed ears, and he believes it's his first order to his students to get away from playing like other people and find your own music through your ears. Did he ever show your the blind interval exercise where two players sit back to back, one plays an interval, the other plays a two note interval starting with the note player 1 ended with? In more advanced versions, you name the interval and the second note BEFORE you play your first note. That is really humbling and ear sharpening for sure!

Wow I'd love to hear more about that, is there a recording? Can you clarify the blind exercise?

He started off as a pick player. You can hear it in first Gary Burton recordings. This was the sound that inspired Pat Metheny long before Pat ever joined Burton. Gradually in the time with Burton, he made the transition to finger playing until one night he put the pick down next to him and played the whole night fingerstyle. That was the last time he played with a pick in public. In the year after he left Gary's band he didn't play publicly, but devoted himself to learning the Bach lute suites, classical style. He was in this "retreat" when Manfred Eicher from ECM called him and asked him to come and record a solo record. That was In Pas(s)ing. Unrehearsed and the first time he had played with others for a year. As a matter of fact, that session was the first time he played with John Surman and Eddie Gomez. All fingerstyle.
