somehow I missed this, I know you were close to Jobs. Maybe the real story is a tad lame for the Hollywood drama queens. Hollywood would also steer away from making a giant free ad for Apple.

I was in extra in the Flint Center and got to meet Danny Boyle. While I didn't enjoy the film as much as many did, I'm reminded of how nice Boyle was, taking time out of his schedule to give a speech to our film department (the Flint is on my school campus). Also, please upload more Steve stories. I could hear hours of that.

Thank you for the review - I guess I'll pass on this movie as well then. Which movie or book would you recommend, which captures the persona and workings of Steve Jobs in a well, rounded way?
@mickeleh
@mickeleh 9 жыл бұрын
+Christian Haas I think there are two. the more recent is _Becoming Steve Jobs_ by Brent Schlender and Rick Tetzeli. It covers not only the Apple years, but has good information about Steve at Pixar and his work with Disney. The other book I'd recommend is Walter Isaacson’s _Steve Jobs_. Isaacson had many interviews with Steve in developing the book. It is, from all I know, very accurate, but not quite as well rounded as the Schlender and Tetzelli book.

The film is based on a biography that was notoriously hated by many people who knew Steve later in life. Like a lot of depictions, it captures the ego-driven 1980s Steve Jobs who sabotaged the Lisa, not the refined Steve Jobs who ran NeXT and Pixar and saved Apple. It says a lot that the only associates of Jobs who liked the book and film were John Sculley and Steve Wozniak, people who were mostly familiar with the Pre-NeXT Steve rather than Post-NeXT Steve.

Kate Winslet did an absolutely excellent job. I actually had the privilege to see an advance screening of this film, wasn't held to an NDA, but haven't been provoked to discuss it yet. I think that the three acts reflecting one another and changing are an absolutely excellent structure within which to tell a story. They provide the exact kind of setup in which one can actively build meaning and repetition of a curious enough nature to draw attention. And from there spring symbolism, dynamics/development, and themes. Creating associations and (for lack of a better, less brutal word) "emotional engineering" are very Jobs in my mind after watching so many keynotes in his post iPhone hay day and reading Walter Isaac's biography of the man. Precise, end-to-end control of the experience is really something the film provides, things going more or less wrong in different ways at different stages in the life. I stopped being disconcerted by the incongruence of Fassbender's appearance, not even hearing about the painting-esque goals of this presentation. It worked. I think it worked better when provided the less distracting bald Steve simulacrum that they could achieve, but the story and set-dressing and performance were plenty to draw the audience in. An amazing film. (But why did "Here's to the Crazy Ones" run silently?)

+ZimmervisionCZ My guess is that Apple refused to license the commercial to the film. I noticed in the credits that each of the clips were separately credited. So what I'm pretty sure happened is that the filmmakers went to the original sources, licensed as many clips as possible and edited them into a re-creation of the spot. That meant no voice-over Richard Dreyfuss narration and no music. Apple also refused to license “1984,” but the Universal legal department supported the filmmakers in using it under Fair Use.
@ZimmervisionCZ
@ZimmervisionCZ 9 жыл бұрын
***** I figured that may have come into play, but I didn't think to look closely in the credits. Nice catch. I think fair use probably would be justified. That's a very big name application of the law on both ends there.

@mickeleh

+KeithShizuo Maybe they should. I've thought about that. Here’s my thinking: 1. the feature originated with DVDs and I'd like to preserved that. 2. I like the sound of “DVD Extras” better than “Blu-ray Extras.”

My problem is this movie was based less on the book and more on everything else that we've already seen in various documentaries, videos and interviews. I think to do a Steve Jobs movie justice, you would have to do a trilogy of movies and I don't think Hollywood would ever do that.

I have a question that's not about the video exactly, but it's about the notification system for new videos: KZbin didn't inform me about your last five videos (including this one), I actually had to click on your channel on a hunch that you'd posted something. But it also didn't show me that you'd posted new videos there either, I have to click on your Videos tab as well to see the latest one. Anyway, have you noticed this problem? And is anyone else experiencing it?
@mickeleh
@mickeleh 9 жыл бұрын
+Michael Tannock I can't guarantee that it will work, but I'll tell you how it's supposed to work. In the PC, Web interface, under the viewer window you'll find the name of the video, and under that, the channel name. Right under that will be a button that says Subscribe or Subscribed (depdending) and just to the right of that button is a gear icon. Click the gear icon and in the pop up menu, check the box “Send me all notifications for this channel.” There is a separate part of the U-I where you can specify how you want to be notified. You'll find that in the top right corner if you click on your channel icon. There's a pop-up with a gear icon. Use that to navigate to settings>notifications. For my part, I'll put the list of recent uploads higher up on my channel page. Hope that helps.

I am not surprised that experiencing a sensually powerful fictionalized version of a person and context that you have real life familiarity with imbued you with a sense of psychological dissociation.

@mickeleh
@mickeleh 9 жыл бұрын
+Tokkemon What about it? The art direction is very well researched. They got the look of the offices, wardrobe, posters, hairstyles of that era down cold. Kutcher did a pretty good Steve Jobs impression. But there is nothing very memorable about the movie.

Yeah, I figured. It's still really cool that you actually knew him. Makes me feel like I have a direct link to him, philosophically speaking. and that's rather inspiring. Which, it seems, he would have been very supportive of from what you were saying. Isn't there another Jobs film? With Ashton Kutcher. Or was that cancelled?

Slandering IBM is one of his "good" ideas? I'm all for competition, but I would prefer companies focus on promoting their own products, rather than giving consumers a misleading image of their opponent. When a company resorts to slander, it leads me to believe they simply don't have any better products to show us.
@mickeleh
@mickeleh 9 жыл бұрын
+Eric Staples Don’t look now but Apple is partnering with IBM to sell Apple products to Enterprise customers. IBM is develepoing enterprise Apps for Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Not only that, but IBM is supplying Apple products to its own workforce, and they have discovered that their own employees who use Mac require less tech support than those who use Windows.
@ericstaples7220
@ericstaples7220 9 жыл бұрын
***** Yeah, I'm well aware IBM is falling out of good grace now, much like Apple was during the 80's/90's. As for employees using Mac needing less tech support, I wonder if that's simply because less employees use Mac to begin with, thus giving them less people to actually request support. It's like saying more people in the U.S. have cancer than people in a country with a very tiny population. That seems to reason.
