Jackie - We worked together at UMAB back in the early 1990s. My son was a student at Baltimore School for the Arts and played with your dad at a jazz fest sponsored by some private school, name forgotten. After Gregory played his stint with the BSTA, he put his sax away and sat down. Your dad told him, "Son, get your horn. You can't play with it in a case." Then he sent him up to play. Gregory was just a freshman at BSTA and was TERRIFIED! He wasn't super-great, but he held his own. On Monday, you told me your dad said, "That kid can play." I was so proud! Sadly, he doesn't play anymore. He worked overseas for 14 years, living in apartments, and never felt comfortable playing there. So glad I found these to play: quite a man, your dad.

He was not only a great musician, but very nice person. Spent many years listening to him and Shirley.

My first time hearing Mickey Fields. I'm blown away. The name rings a bell because when I was a high school kid in Baltimore in the early 70s I seem to recall passing a place on Greenmount sometimes called the Royal Roost(?) that had a sign advertising live jazz played by one Mickey Fields. I didn't know squat about jazz but wondered what I was missing in there. Oh, my Lord! Is THAT what I was missing?

Man, this is one of the hippest players all around. I'm a professional bassist in Austin, and let me tell you..., I am playing right now with a "butt-load" of Bawmer musicians who now live in the ATX. Organ trios are the rave right now in the ATX. I wish that if these guys are still around, COME ON DOWN!!!!!

Used to sit in during mickey;s Monday night jam sessions at the sportmans lounge with albert dailey on piano and mickey said I was pretty good on flute, but should hang it up on saxophone. Blunt advice from a real master.Miss you mickey.

I remember first hearing Mickey and his sister Shirley at the Birdcage. He and she were great! I later jammed with him at the Sportsmans as well as all the others on guitar. Joe Hose ,Odonel levy didn't leave much room for cats who couldn't play. Eventually Mickey called me for a gig. I also ended up touring Spain with Lou Donaldson while on break from Morgan St. Not bad for a U.S Army trombone player! I ended up teaching in Baltimore City schools...that was a trip!!!! Retired military, retired teacher, now on S.S too! Thanks to all the real cats who pushed me!

Mr. Fields' great dexterity is reminiscent of Mr. Dolphy's - with a touch of his own.

Great to hear THE LEGEND! :) My father, Robert Ryon was apparently very fond of Mickey and told me all about listening to/seeing him back in the 50's and 60's in Baltimore. Love this post! What is Mickey's set up for his horn? thx Peace
