Unfortunately, the Giants couldn't get a hit out of McCovey in the following WS, as Mays would have scored the winning run in game 7, or McCovey would have been following him into home plate had that foul ball he hit not have been foul.

Matty Alou was stopped at third on Mays’ double down the right field line. McCovey hit a routine fly ball down the right field line that Maris would have caught easily if it hadn’t gone foul into the seats. McCovey than hit the liner that Richardson caught to end the game and the series. It was a great, exciting series between two fine teams that could have gone either way. Back when players main focus was winning rather than personal statistics.

In 1961 I was 12 years old. My Father was a big Yankee fan and he took me to games in Cleveland every year. He took me to Pittsburgh in 1960 for the World Series (my Mom was a big Pirates fan) and the took me to Cincinnati in 1961 for the World Series. I loved Mickey Mantle when I was a kid and thank my Father for the opportunities he gave me to see him play. Thanks Pops, God rest your soul. Just for the record, I am a die hard Detroit Tigers fan!

The structure of MLB was very different then. In fact, your Tigers won the last AL championship when it was affectionately known as a pennant. The year before league chamionships (LCSs). Three years before the very 1st World Series night game. I'll never forget that game. Pirates vs. Orioles. But oh, what I'd give to go back to at least a taste of the World Series in the day. 1st & 2nd divisions, and not East, Central & West Divisions. Baseball is missing something great that they used to have. Now, the national pastime competes with the WNBA for airtime. Let the WNBA have the TV. Baseball was better off when people went out of their way to tune in and update. Shades of heavyweight chamionships and Super Bowls. WITHOUT the airtime and money.

Those were the days Russ! I was a Yankee fan but loved all world series. When the Cards played the Bosox we all had our radios hidden during school, trying to listen. Then it was time to go to Mrs. Steenson's classroom. She was VERY STRICT, and we all sadly placed our radios into our lockers and trudged into her room, as nobody wanted to risk getting caught. After we were all seated, she declared, "We aren't having class today.". She went to her store room and wheeled out a TV on a stand. We sat and watched Gibson duel with Longborg!!!! We couldn't believe it and never looked at Mrs. Steenson with the same eyes again.

It seems that Mickey's hip got a lot worse when he received an injection from a quack doctor of the celebrities, who pushed the needle in too far. That took Mickey out of the HR race with Roger Maris. It is reported that Clete Boyer believed that Mickey was suffering from the clap. Jane Leavey's book, The Last Boy of Summer, or something like that, is pretty widely acknowledged as being a truthful rendering of Mick's star crossed life. Heroic but flawed, like all humans.

Sure, is sad that he had to make ends meet on a $72,000.00 salary, $717k today. When I was 7 or 8, after a Yankee game in Chicago in the late 50's, we were waiting outside at the Yankee bus with a crowd of fans. There was a small path from the exit from Comiskey to the bus. We were in the 3rd row of people, Dad had me on his shoulders, and Mickey Mantle walked by. I thought I died and had gone to heaven, just being that close to my hero.

I was 10 years old and my team, the Detroit Tigers, won 101 games and came in second place, 8 games behind the “damn Yankees!” The Tigers lineup included Al Kaline, Stormin’ Norman Cash, and Rocco Domenico Colavito. The Tigers led the league in scoring and Frank Larry (the Yankee Killer) won 23 games. However, the Yankees won the season series 10 wins to 8. Maris hit 61 homers that year, beating the Babe’s longtime record by 1.

I attended a Yankee game at Yankee Stadium and Mickey Mantle at bat hit a home run on the first pitch. I was 11 years old and thrilled and the ball come nearer and nearer till it dropped right next to my mother who took me to the game. The crowd went crazy for the ball. We sat in the bleaches behind left outfield. It came so close to us that my mom could have caught it. This is wonderful memory of my mother and I. Can you imagine if she had caught or retrieved that ball. I never would have sold it truthfully. Too attached to the memory to let it go if I had it as an adult at my age now. Dad would have had it framed and hung on the wall. My mom would have gotten it signed by Mantle. We left the stadium to go home and I had a hot dog. Funny thing is I had no idea where my brother was at the time. Love you mom.

I’m from Cleveland, and the Indians were my team! But, when the Yankees came to town there always was a large crowd! I knew the name of every Yankee player! To this day, I have a New York Yankee’s 1962 Pennant, that has a team photo on it, hanging in my office. I'm loving all the memories this video brings back. Mickey was my all-time favorite player. What bothers me the most today is how MLB and certain players ruined the record books. During the steroid era players who didn't compare with Mantle were breaking home run records. Then MLB wanted to add more offense to the game - overlooked the steroid abuse, juiced up the baseball, and replaced the old ballparks with bandboxes. I can just imagine how Mickey would've done in the the new Yankee stadium. Remember, Mantle was never a strict pull hitter like Maris was. He used to lose 15-20 home runs a year in the old stadium when he hit long shots to death valley (461 to dead center, 457 to left center, 420 to right center). Do the math! Injuries and all if he played in the ballparks of today for 18 years he would've hit over 800 HR's!

I remember a game in Cleveland where he pinched hit. He did not start because of a shingles flare-up. He came to bat visibly limping with men on base and he was the winning run. He promptly hit a home run to win the game!

Wow. Just realized this is first and only World Series game our family attended. We drove from Indianapolis to Cincinnati. Dad surprised us with tickets. We had standing room. Our brother was HUGE Yankees fan. Caught lots of flack from Redlegs fans because he wore a homemade Yankee uniform. When the game ended, he got lots of respect for taking the razzing. Mantle was his favorite and the reason Brother learned to switch-hit. On the other hand, we have no recollection of seeing Mantle, but made note Whitey Ford broke a Babe Ruth scoreless innings pitching record that day. Wow! Can't wait to share this with my brother. I still can’t believe that they had a drain in the outfield at Yankee Stadium…imagine Mickey if he didn’t have to play with that torn ACL that he suffered in his rookie season. Mante had 54. He took an injection that turned into an infection so he stopped playing mid september. Too bad. He and Maris would probably have both broken 60. What is wonderful is that Judge hit 62 without steroids. Judge is on par with Mantle as a homerun hitter Not as great as an all round player but Home Runs - Judge is the man.

Mantle was the ultimate "If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself" guy. But because of his family history, he expected to die young, and he decided to enjoy every precious moment.

My first year as a Bb fan. We moved to Cincinnati in June and there was already WS fever. Great lineup but no match for one of the best Yankee teams ever. Great to see Crosley Field again. Frank Robinson and Vada Pinson were a great 3-4 combo in middle of lineup.

@@TheBatugan77 True. And while those late nights with Whitey and Billy might have affected his performance a bit the next day, it was the injuries playing the game that really impacted his numbers. (Ok, except for the hip injury that abscessed due to the notorious "Dr. Feelgood").

As a huge Reds fan I must admire Mantles beautiful stance and swing ... lefties tend to look " prettier " at the plate but Mickey's stance and swing are near flawless from either side ... a true NATURAL

Good game. I was 18 and soon to graduate High School. Mantle was always hurting. His knees hurt so much he could hardly run.
