Born in 1949, came of age in the 60’s and 70’s. The Trio and PP&M were a big part of my maturation. I owe them a lot. I wish we had more people like them to educate today’s youth. We need more flowers and fewer graveyards.

Honoring Bob Shane b. 2/1/34 - d. 1/26/20 It was with great pleasure and a great honor to have known and worked with the original Kingston Trio and their legacy today is firmly intact. As the exclusive agency for the heirs we at Producers, Inc. enjoy seeing the original energy and sound kept alive and well for sold-out audiences across the country. I enjoyed many hours of fun and adventure with BOB SHANE. He ran the organization and kept the TRIO and legacy active these many years. Thank you, Bob for your loyalty, perseverance and love of folk music and its impact world-wide. We will continue our responsibility to keep your music alive. You will be missed. Craig Hankenson, President, Producers, Inc.

When people say music was simpler back then this is what they mean. Voices and acoustic music made you real you could not hide behind amplifiers light shows and cheesy costumes and dance numbers. Music is meaningful for every generation but simpler is more solid. Thank you great concert jumped to newer generations like the great Lindsey Buckingham. Thanks.

29 years old, Northern California native, and these guys I swear were able to mix the easy breezy California sound to folk music. They capture something timelessly west coast that no one else has ever seemed to.

Since their very beginning, when I was about three, I loved the Kingston Trio so much that my parents entrusted me with their brand new Hi-Fi so I could play the Kingston Trio’s albums without HS to pester them to do it for me. Here it is, 65 years later, and I’ve never tired of their music. Watching this reunion show brought a few tears to my eyes, knowing that the original Trio, along with John Stewart, are all gone, but their music lives on. I hope it always will.

1964...listening to College Concert. Same! I was 3, standing enthralled in front of the HUGE speakers which sat on the floor of our 18th c. house near Boston...thinking these marvelous musical storytellers were inside. They never failed to stop me in my tracks. Nick Reynolds' voice was the best.....et tu Charlie? : )
@Cheerfultoday11 ай бұрын
Nick definitely had the most expressive voice. You could hear the excitement that he had while he was singing, and he would sometimes punch in yip or a wail that livened up a song’s sound. Also Nick and Bob Shane were lifetime friends. That’s another quality about them that made me love them.

I have this concert on a homemade DVD dubbed from an old recording I made on a VHS tape. Now, I will have it downloaded onto my computer and I couldn't be happier. There are many folk-music groups to be formed, but none please me more than the ever-changing Kingston Trio.

I'm now 75 years old and I still can't forget the enjoyment of listening to the Kingston trio albums. They were As Good As It Gets. Of course, Bob Shane's "Scotch & Soda" was played more than any other record in any others in and any other juke boxs in any other honky tonks, lounges, bars, saloons & dancehalls anywhere. I still play guitar and banjo because of my influence and the Kingston Trio.

That's me playing the keyboard at 50:07. I got to meet Mary Travers and Tom Smothers and several other folkies that night. I was in John Stewart's band and already knew Dave Guard and Nick Reynolds. Looking back on it, I guess that was an historic occasion. I'm proud to have been part of it all.
@mickeycrist10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your note...Do you have any idea who the two women singers are? How did you get recruited for that show?
@mmckinnissable10 жыл бұрын
Mickey Crist The two female vocalists were, at various times, part of John's band. One of them was named, as I recall, Karen Tobin; the other Debbie something. I met John while I was working at Westwood Music and demonstrated a keyboard for him. He needed a keyboard player and I ended up in the band with Chris Whelan on bass and a succession of drummers (the drummer in this video is Bill Mutter, who I brought into the group and who was the best of them in my opinion). John's son Michael and a funny fellow named Hank Hoban made up the road crew, and we more or less toured the western states, appearing on the bill with Maria Muldaur, Tim Weisberg, Pablo Cruise, Elvin Bishop, Stevie Nicks, and others. I played with him for the better part of a year.

In the hills of central eastern Pennsylvania in '58 and '59 I played guitar and sang along with these young men in my attic room. In late summer 1962, with my soon to be firstborn still on the 'inside', my wife and a shipmate of mine walked up to the Cliff Walk Manor mansion to hear the kickoff to the Newport Jazz Festival Rhode Island. The attraction was a 5 piece all star jazz band that blew us all away. When they took a break, the young, energetic and talented trio knocked our socks off. I still get chills thinking about that night. Oh my, am I old.

When I was in college in the early 1960s (think Animal House) I played guitar and banjo in a pickup folk group. We played at parties and a few bars around town, and we covered a LOT of Kingston Trio songs. Some of the most fun days of my life. Some years later I had gotten interesting in sports car racing, and was thrilled to see Nick Reynolds racing a Brabham Formula car at Cotati Raceway in California. I later raced myself, so I feel I had two connections to the Kingston Trio.

Just the best, 8 guys playing "The Trio". From the very first time I heard them in about 1958 or so till the last, they were the best, with such a long lasting fan base. Makes me happy to hear their music, makes me sad to know the book is almost closed on on the last of the original trio. The amount of enjoyment they provided is impossible to measure, along with all the hours I spent singing their wonderful music.

First, thanks for this. It is really special. I had heard that this concert wasn't that good, but that is wrong. JS may have flubbed a banjo solo just a bit, but that is live music not done on the 61st take. They were all really good, and the vocals were still there after 20 years! I have to admire JS for coming back to do this show....he was still making original recordings (rock) at that time, and he was very gracious to everyone to step back 15 years into his past. There is a book out about the group now, called "Greenback Dollar." A really great read if you like the KT or have an interest in show biz. They were the top selling recording act in the world in the late 50's - early 60's. They influenced me like they influenced so many others.

Living in Atlanta in the late 70s... and still performing music professionally... I contacted Bob Shane to see if the KT would be interested in headlining a Folk Revival Concert with PP&M at the Fox Theater. He agreed to the project and gave me a price. Strange as it may seem today... I acquired Peter Yarrow's phone # from NY information service and he actually answered the phone. Initially committing to participate in the concert... and offering a price... he called back a couple of days later and said their manager would not engage in a "festival" type appearance... following several years of "layoff". It would have been the first performance by the two groups in a decade or so. Hats off to Bob for finally bringing about the Reunion... and since then... he has become a client and good friend. Credit is due him for providing unique fun music for a half century and sharing his talent with the whole world. More on LinkedIn @ Paul Puckett Entertainment Specialist... :)
