ÇANAKKALE HAS MUCH TO OFFER AS WELL AS THE GALLIPOLI WAR MEMORIALS

Çanakkale and the Dardanelles are well known because of the first world war, but Çanakkale has much to offer as well as the Gallipoli War Memorials.
In this video we see all that Çanakkale the city has to offer, including the popular streets, museums, the ferry boats, the worlds longest bridge, the most visited war memorials, including ANZAC cove, the town of Gallipoli and the famous ruins of Troy.

Perhaps some very important destinations in the Canakkale region are not even shown in this video. The islands of Gokceada and Bozcaada, the Kazdaglari National Park with its incredible nature, the town of Geyikli, the ancient port and city of Assos, the town of Ezine, famous for its cheese, and many other places we should have seen in this video. I feel sorry for the Anzac soldiers. For the British, for the wars they fought with the Turks, whom they were not enemies of in these lands. Thousands of Australians, New Zealanders and even Indians died in this land they did not recognize. Turks have never lost in defense of their homeland, so they should be respected. Even the founding leader Atatürk said to the families of the martyred Anzac soldiers whose graves are in Çanakkale, "Don't worry, they are our children now." he said

The real meaning of the text is as follows; You got excited about the First World War and joined the war from miles away. However, it was a war that was none of your business. If you thought that you would destroy yourself by seeing yourself as a hero and despising us and thinking of a WAR that would be guaranteed to be won, I hope that you will not make such a mistake again and that you will not bear the curse of all people by participating in wars that do not concern you. Mustafa Kemal Pasha was just a colonel commanding 19th infantry reserve division during Gallipoli campaign. Because his division was reserve he couldn't even engage unless there was an order from his commanders. After entente landings began he waited 6 hours for an order but it never came, Ottoman high command was in chaos. Nobody expected entente forces to land at such rough terrain against steep hills at all sides so they were thinking those landings could be decoys. But soon Kemal Pasha learned ANZAC vanguard reached Chunuk bair which is one of highest hills in Gallipoli and overlooking entire region, it would be very costly or even impossible to capture it back if Anzacs could fortify it. So he illegally ordered his 19th division to climb Chunuk bair from eastern side and repel Anzacs back into lower ground, he also illegally took control units from other divisions in the area giving them charge orders as well. It was 19th division's 57th infantry regiment which reached Chunuk bair first, simultaneously with three ANZAC regiments. Kemal Pasha knowing the severity of situation gave his famous die order to 57th infantry regiment: ''I'm not ordering you to attack, I'm ordering you to die! In the time which passes until we die, other troops and commanders can take our place” 57th infantry regiment followed the order and engaged in a bloody hand to hand combat for control of the hill. They managed to repel Anzacs back into lower ground but it was extremely costly, within only 2 hours 80% of the regiment were dead or wounded. The regiment could be reinforced and continued fighting both in Gallipoli and other fronts. After several hours more units reached Chunuk bair including 19th division's 72th and 77th infantry regiments and began fortifying the hill against further ANZAC attacks. During 8 months long campaign Anzacs could never reach those hills again and got stuck in lower ground surrounded by steep hills at all sides, in fact ANZAC commander requested their evacuation at the end of first day after they were repelled back. However British high command refused it, claiming if Turks could see a single healthy soldier leaving they would charge and slaughter them all. It is true such large scale evacuations were always quite risky but after 8 months of hopeless fighting Anzacs were finally evacuated while Turks didn't charge and kill them.. Because Kemal Pasha and his 19th reserve division saved those very important hills, Ottoman high command had to ignore his illegal actions and instead promote him, giving him command of entire Anzac front. On entente perspective Gallipoli campaign was indeed for nothing but at least it made Ataturk a national hero and perhaps opened the way for establishment of Turkey so it wasn't for nothing entirely.

Absolutely fascinating. My great grandfather was sent out there with the Royal Marines Light Infantry. He had two pieces of good luck. Firstly, he survived Gallipoli from beginning to end in the trenches and was evacuated to Mudros then onto the UK on HMT Olympic. Secondly, rather than being sent to the Western Front with the rest of his battalion, who nearly all perished, he was trained in naval gunnery and was eventually put on a newly built gun ship HMS Resolution... which the admiralty were too frightened to dent! His luck run out during WW2, he be became diabetic , his family couldn't afford food and insulin (no nhs) and he went into a coma and died in 1944. Thanks for posting.

No, he died when my grandfather was 17 and had been sent to work in Westbury. We knew he was in the First World War but didn't know what or where. We found out when we got his records from the Fleet Air Arm museum who hold Marine's records from this period. According to my grandfather's sister, he was a very "difficult" chap and very religious, she said she couldn't wait to move out. @@mickandtrudie

My aunt is living in Gelibolu since I was born, so I know that place very well. We visited the Atatürk house and the martyrs' memorial, too. But, I don't know why, we had never been to Canakkale itself. So a couple years ago my mother and I decided to go there by bus. It is the cleanest turkish city I have ever seen in my life. It's charming and beautiful. There are many places I would like to visit like Bozcaada and Gökceada and Troj and Assos. Now I am married and my husband is not as interested as I am so maybe I'll have to let him watch this video😂

Thank you for this. We are going to Istanbul next year for the second time and this time Çanakkale was on the list. Always wanted to see the memorials and also wondered about Troy but think we will leave that one. Did not look very impressive. We always like to do the travel planning ourselves rather than an organised tour but think that will be the better option this time.
