In this video we show you the very best of Izmir, in Turkey.
(az sonra Türkçe altyazılı seçebileceksiniz)
Possibly the most cosmopolitan city in Turkey with a modern outlook and very similar to many cities in Europe. Izmir is a big city so we have concentrated on showing you the central Konak and Alsancak area of the city, where most visitors would stay. We were also lucky enough to be there for the Izmir International Fair and Independence Day (Kurtuluş Günü).

My grandparents were born in Izmir around 1920 and raised in this great city. They moved to Israel in 1949 after the establishment of the Jewish state. Jews lived hundreds of years in Turkey after the spanish deportation of the jews and they were spread all over the middle east. I think they were treated very well in Turkey and even during second world war they survived and then came to Israel!!!

Merhaba, I really enjoyed the Izmir tour. Izmir was my home from 1966 to 1968....population at that time 200,000 and ONE traffic light!!! I was military at the time with the NATO support group. The Korfon Hotel you stayed in back then was leased by the US government and was the Officers Club and hotel and temperory housing for officer grade US military. I was enlisted but assigned to the American dependents school (supply detail) located behind the French Hospital, (in a converted tobacco warehouse) which I believe is still there. I loved that city and had many Turkish friends who gave me a Turkish name, TAYFUN. I later returned to Istanbul to study at Robert College, est 1863.. The school is still operating, but back to high school level, no university level. Although I lived and worked 31 years in Japan and retired in Bangkok 16 years, my Turkish language skills exceed ALL! I enjoy all your Turkish You Tube videos!

Hi Mick, Canadian born in Turkey.. Thanks for all the Turkey videos. About Izmir, Smyrna is the name in English and other languages, Turkish people never called the place Smyrna, long before the official declaration in 1930. BTW Turkish "Beylik" took over the city first time around 1330s...

( Annem anlatırdı her yer bakla tarlası idi derdi ). Bakla'nın üst kısmı kabuk bölgesi dokunduğun zaman kadife hissi verir ellerimize diye biliyorum. Sizlere iyi yolculuklar diliyorum tekrar gelin güzel izmirimize :) Dear Mick & Trudie, My family has been living in izmir for 4 generations, it makes us proud that beautiful people like you come to izmir to see and like it. But there are so many centers to visit in Izmir, you have visited a few places, I hope you will come to Izmir again and we, the people of Izmir, will welcome you :) Note: Velvet castle got its name as I heard it as follows. In the past, when there was no settlement, a vegetable called Bakla was grown here. (My mother used to say that everywhere was a bean field). I know that the upper part of the broad bean gives a velvety feel to our hands when you touch it. I wish you a good trip, come again to our beautiful izmir :)

What a wonderful video, especially for me! Why me? Because my Father was in the US Navy, and in 1953 he was assigned to Izmir for two years, 1953-55, and so he took our entire family there from San Diego, California via prop plane across the Atlantic, stopping on a rainy night in Frankfurt to change planes, to Athens, to change planes (prop planes aren't JETS, LOL) and by morning we landed in Izmir's airport and took a car to the city of Izmir where the first time in my life I saw lots of camels on the streets. How exciting it was!. I was almost 7 years old and my sister 9 years old. We went to school in an American school housed in an apartment building near Alsanchak, where we lived across our back fence of a mosque, the Alsancak Hocazade Camii, across our back fence, probably the Chims Line cafe building now on 1392 Sk. I am now nearly 76. We visited Ephesus while we lived in Izmir. I recall the castle on the hill where I remember being told that the Apostle Paul was once there, and of course Izmir, the old Smyrna, is the city where Polycarp lived and was martyred in the second century AD. I do remember in those days the shopping markets, but at that time there were no skyscrapers, underground rails, or highways. There were FEW cars and we got around often via horse and carriage. My parents talked of Ataturk, and the recent past, but I didn't learn about that history until I went to school again in the USA. Eisenhower was our President while we were in Izmir, a highlight of my childhood! We returned the USA and NYCity via US Navy passenger ship across the Atlantic, which took 2 weeks and 4 days. On our way through the Mediterranean via ship, we stopped in Naples and toured Pompeii, which in those days wasn't nearly as unearthed as it is today. I can still count to FIVE in Turkish, though it has been many years ago. We did visit Karshiyaka, where I saw the BIGGEST pomegranates I'd ever seen. Coming from San Diego, I found that Izmir has nearly the same climate and weather and layout of the city as San Diego, with it huge bay and waterfront. Our Navy ship left for the USA right along that main waterfront shown in your video. Thank you for this very lovely tour that brought back many great memories of my brief childhood.🌹

@@mickandtrudie A book? That's a good idea. But it was me at age 8 came up with the crazy idea that my sister and I should ride around Izmir on our tricycle: our Stepmother was in the American hospital with yellow jaundice so our neighbors watched us during the day times. We filled our water bottles with water with pills to purify the water, packed up our tricycle and hopped on it together for a joyride. (I had learned my way around Izmir by watching my parents so I knew how to get around). We had no money, only a sandwich or so, and made it back by afternoon - stupid idea because we could have been kidnapped! But, it was such FUN! As a family we visited Ephesus too, and my stepmother put a piece of a carved stone she found there in her purse and today it sits on my shelf at home. (She could have been arrested!) We often went to the American open0air movies where we saw Jerry Lewis/Dean Martin movies, drank 5c cokes from a bottle, and saw many Westerns on the big screen with other Americans, you know, John Wayne, etc. We had a very exciting trip back westerly across the Atlantic to NYC harbor, and then to the New Jersey Olds factory where my Dad picked up his brand NEW 88 1955 Merry Olsmobile, two=-tone blue, 4 door, then we drove across the USA in it to visit his mother in Stockton, California in those days. Don't get me wrong, the only drawback was the many vaccinations we had to get before we left the USA overseas: those weren't fun at all. But I love Izmir! I loved the Mediterranean Sea, and I loved the 1950s, the BEST of American in those days! I didn't realize that Izmir's name was changed from Smyrna in 1930. Not long ago. What a history Izmir has!!

@@mickandtrudie A few photos yes. Turkey was very different i those days...I watched their military march down our street, and an uprising between Turks and Greeks, in which a neighbor family (a Jewish family) had their furniture thrown down into the street from their 4th floor apartment (sad) because of the squrimish. I swam topless (lol) in the Mediterranean on one family excursion to a beach area (don't remember the area), but I've lost that photo and also the one of me dancing on the ruins of the Temple of Diana. I recall at my age, 8, seeing that Pompeii had plumbing pipes on the sides of the streets and wondered, "Did they have plumbing in those days?" Yes they did. What an education for me at that age. My Dad was a Chief in the US Navy, radar, electronics, and a background before the Navy in broadcasting in radio in the Stockton area. He had taught woodwinds (music) in the schools. I still have his Albert system clarinet, a full-body one with no joint in the middle. It still plays as do his gold-plated King Alto Saxophone, now vintage instruments that I play from time to time (I'm a musician, professional for over 60 years, piano, all strings, violin, viola, cello, bass) and these were some of the best years of my life, the 1850s! Thanks Mick and Trudie! You're a darling couple. I've been to the UK 5 times, the first to attend the International String Teacher's Conference in Glasgow, at the University there in 1999, where I got to play cello in the orchestra, the "Hebrides" Suite. Wonderful! And later I took my son and granddaughter to London and Scotland. I've been also 3 times to New Zealand, mostly South Island, Roxburgh, the fruit-growing capital of the world. And whilst there my friend arranged a visit to the sheep meat works, not often possible, but arranged because the Manager was his personal friend. I got to see how a nation supports itself. I missed all the sheep on the hills when I flew back home. Every nation has its own GLORY! I look for world PEACE when the next phase of international conflict is over.🌹
