A suggestion for your JLCPCB friends.. It would be great if they had a repository of designs for circuits with a peer review and voting platform. My thinking: There are LOTS of people making widgets to scratch their itch. There must be common itches scratched. Not everyone is willing to design a PCB for a common itch, but might like to order some boards if it has been voted up. A small credit for each board ordered could be given to the designer of popular designs. JLCPCB makes and sells more boards.

With the Rock Pi 4A - if the M2 is on the underside and the processor is on the underside does that mean you can either use M2 OR a Heatsink or can you still use both at the same time?
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
It depends on the heatsink, but yes you can for the default one.

It would be good to mention that Allwinner H6 does pci-e the other way around (implementation sux and has workaround patches to kernel so can't expect any pcie peripheral to work properly and out of the box). And SoC is still A53 based so performance is not so high.

Yes, true true. The RockChips are really going to become the SoC to watch. I should have mentioned that the RISC-V will be the follow up SoC.

Love the fact that I can use the PI to browse the Internet w/o worries of virus or malware infections. Simply replace a microSD card. No worries, Mate! Gotta go and set up remote vnc. You kids today may be frustrated with the slowness of added features to boards like USB3 or Gigabit ethernet, but to us old folks who've been around a while, some of this stuff is just simply miraculous. When I think what I could have done with a simple Arduino when I was in high school in the early 80s, let alone something like a Raspberry Pi or the like. This stuff still blows my mind.

mini b was better as it was stronger but how many items would you break with mini b?
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
The problem with miniB was the mechanics. Over time the connector would move up and down and bend the body. You'd end up with a dodgy connector every time. I have this issue currently on the camera I use for shooting. Won't be long before I have to resort to the old BluTak method of securing.

To be honest, the maker community probably *isn't* a great market for Intel. They seem to really struggle with delivering something appealing to makers. There seems to be some intangible *something* that just keeps them from putting out products that makers and/or educators actually want. The only place I have noticed them having any success is with Altera. Their budget MAX10 FPGAs have been modestly popular.
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
Yes true. The Maker market is very ... ADHD. So many distractions and who knows when the next hyper-focus will hit. And yes... quite like the Alteras. I really hope they don't pull the plug on those!

Nice roundup ( if a little late in the year ), I get the have to suppliment income thing so no complaints from me ( yes Real Life gets in my way too ;), its a real bugger). I do agree with your predictions but would add that I dont think RockChip and friends will sit still and release an A76 based SoC with some real nice additions ( I3c ? ) amongst higher ram / storage options, as for the Pi to be honest after seeing the announcment that they are signed up with RiscV, that for me spelled out the end of the current BCM partnership. I would think we might see something but I would not count on it, knowing that designing a SoC is one thing, getting everything to play nice is something else entirly. Ive also though about what this will be the year of, not quite sure because the current pace of FPGA's amongst other things has not changed from last year. Panfrost / Midgard ( Mali Txxx ) DRI/DRM looks to be heading up the Mesa chain and I would think once moved upstream will shape up quickly. Take a look at work here, rosenzweig.io/blog/panfrost-on-the-rk3399-meow.html Ive watched the Mesa dev list alot, mainly interested in SoC implementations, but as you well know its not Linux that is the issue its Arm who own Mali that have no interest in open drivers ( cough cough nvidia crap cough cough powervr glad they became irrelivent cough ). Hopefully this might be a year of bringing decent graphic and video playback to an open and stable state ( a breath of fresh air ) ...
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I tend to agree also ... Can't yet figure out what 2019 will be the "year of"... FPGAs already made their stamp in 2018, but we also saw AI start to make a dent. So, maybe there will be some more ground made in AI... maybe as you said, some advancements in OSS graphics. Might be just a consolidation year. Also, once we see really cheap SBCs with NVME storage hit the shelves, we're gonna see a lot of people take advantage of this. So, maybe cheap NAS will be big this year. That along with cheaper RAM ... looking good so far.

Do you or anyone here knows of an SBC that can do off-line speech recognition using an I2S MEMS mic? I don't want to use Amazon, Google, or other sites for limited command recognition like; "Bozo, living room, Desk light, On, 50%". Bozo being the wake up call instead of "Alexa" or "Hi Google":) I do understand that reliable speech recognition requires lots of horse power, neural networks,... but I am hoping some one has an SBC and SDK for this purpose. Don't need Wifi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, USB...ETC. A TTL serial will do.

@sethrd9995 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
Ugh and there's another I missed! I was going to back that one too.
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons why Nigel disagrees is probably - 1. It's huge! 100mm x 130mm isn't small. 2. Atom x5-Z8350 is a SoC that is used in the LattePanda. It's a nice SoC, but doubt AtomicPi can deliver all this for that price. 3. AtomicPi won't kill the Pi just on specs alone. 4. There's no 40 pin GPIO - so no Pi hats will ever be used. This is actually something that people want to be able to do. Apart from that it still looks like a decent board. Let's just wait to see if they can deliver though!
@browaruspierogus21825 жыл бұрын
@@MickMake I don't think AtomicPi uses Atmel like LattePanda. It will be a beast despite size. And there will be more projects with x64 cpus which have awesome support and IDEs

Enjoyed the video esp the power connector comments. Did you see Ebon Uptons comments www.tomshardware.co.uk/raspberry-pi-4-everything-we-know,news-59876.html
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
Yup. Seems to be in line with what I said, but his comment on USB-C durability is a good one. However, if there's a USB-C it gets rid of the HDMI connector and so the board could be potentially smaller or the space could be used for more GPIO headers.

micro USB2... how do you power a 23w plank with that?
@MickMake5 жыл бұрын
:-D Actually, I have every USB type adaptor under the planet: USB2.0 - A, B, miniA, miniB, microA, microB & USB3 - A, B, microB & C. Although I only have a couple of the miniA & microA and recently tossed a lot of the USB-B cables out. The reason why I bash microB for SBCs, is ... The original standard wasn't designed to deliver such high currents that more modern SBCs expect. This month's project I actually designed in a microB, but I always struggle with routing that power connector to accommodate any decent current. Move to the dark side - get a USB Type-C! :-D
