Ladyhawkke - and all in his memory too. He only used a score when there were three participants - orchestra, soloist and his brilliant self. If I have made an error in this statement please correct me but I believe it comes from a trustworthy source. The Maestro could 'demolish' a whole symphony in three to four working days at home, only needing a memory brush-up for later performances. All that and fluent in seven European languages. Whew! Makes me tired to think of it. One of Romania's greatest artists. So glad he adhered to his preference for music and didn't follow his heavy-handed father who wanted him to be a local government official.

I don't have any formal musical education. I've always listened to music with my heart, not with my head... IMHO this particular rendition of Ravel's "Boléro" is the best, the greatest that is out there. It begins by getting out from the body, like a whisper, slowly, slowly... and it ends blowing your mind... It's like "Boléro" was composed for Celibidache, and Celibidache was born to conduct "Boléro"... The Master and the Masterpiece...

He lives every note, he explained in his Musical Phenomenology that a musician is discovering the music every instant, the composer just makes a suggestion but the music is created in the interpretation, with a fresh first look approach, even though every thing was over rehearsed and the tempo more likely slower than most conductors so we could appreciate the complexity of the body of sound. He does not look upon the repetitions as reiterating or monotonous, every new frase is a fresh new start note by note and the build up in intensity is monumental, with total control over the volumes to be able to reach brilliantly the culmination, still with lower volumes than most directors. I have never heard any conductor do anything remotely like this. He explained that it occurs naturally in all music but mostly in Ravel we should try listen the super harmonics several octaves higher that we ignore but in the case of Ravel he generously writes some of them down for us, you can here some of those higher harmonies around minute 8:08 or 10:41 but they are happening all the time we don't hear them because of the microphones used in the recordings, the occur naturally in the concert hall so you had to see him live otherwise that was not his music. Ichi go ichi e was part of his philosophy. This is a once in a lifetime interpretation, a historic event. The greatest conductor in history! He used to receive 20 and 30 minutes of applause. And wouldn't mind the coughing or any noises in the hall, everything for him was a part of that unique instant. He had a very deep understanding of art and human emotions with a Buddhist inspiration, I had the good fortune to see him several times, the experience was electrifying, mystical. Thank you for sharing! Even though he would have never authorized it... he was vehemently opposed to recordings and electronic reproduction of music, imagine that! Today we mostly only hear electronically reproduced music in low quality digital audio in computer speakers and headsets which filter out all the harmonics, noises and also the emotion of life, into a beautifully wrapped present but empty. Our modern world has forgotten or never appreciated these concepts, we only have this moment. in most composer's lifetime before recordings began their music could only be heard once or twice, in a very special event, a concert! while today we can repeat it a hundreds times, fix it in our memory and then we lose the spontaneity of the first listening, the first love! we always compare it with what we've heard before, we already "know" it, when it should be like the discovery of a new landscape, an adventure, like you see on his expressions on every note. Today we buy low quality digitalized emotion, ones and zeros with no heart. Please study this man and his philosophy it's very important. One of the greatest minds of the 20th century. what is beauty? Truth, and Truth sets us free. Why do we feel emotion when we listen to beautiful music? Because we are experiencing the Truth.

Me too. I come here often to watch this and it gets me every time. I've found myself looking more into Celibidache and his phenomenology of music which was influenced by Eastern philosophy and the ultimate truth that everything vibrates and that the end is the beginning. It's because of his method, that he did not like his work to be recorded because he felt that every aspect of music/sound waves cannot be recorded and can only be truly experienced in person. He wanted his audience to experience the true freedom that only music can bring.

Sergiu Celibidache clearly was a wizard! Making magic every second, enjoying it like only chiidren, mad ones and genious may. He was casting spells with that wand and he didn't even mind trying to disguise. So was Ravel.

After listening and watching twice, I removed the sound and watched, only with the inner music, the movements with which he would bring each instrument, his hand, his glance, his body. Oh! mon dieu! I'm sure that's what Ravel intended to tell us, and he surely did through Sergiu's body and soul. Merci, Merci, Merci!

At 11:00, The Maestro merges with the orchestra. At 14:48, the soul of Maurice Ravel returns from the dead and becomes one with the conductor and the orchestra. And in the end I, the humble viewer, immerse myself in the Oneness. No, not transcendent. DIVINE!

If you see a duck gliding gracefully through the water, you don’t see the hard work it has to do under the waterline. Maestro Celibidache makes it looks like easy, gracefully and always in control, gliding on the waterline, the way he conducts his Orchestra.
