I think the “gold” goes to Balanchine’s NYCB production. The demands he put on his dancers, including the children, is unequaled. His “Russian Dance” is thrilling and the marathon undertaken by Dewdrop in “The Waltz of the Flowers” is considered his most demanding role. There is so much more. Essentially, though, Balanchine’s production evokes something lacking in Russian productions: the wonderment of childhood and the ineffable joy of Christmas.

@@andredarin8966 The premiere of the ballet "The Nutcracker" took place in 1892 on this stage at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. By the way, Balanchine was born in St. Petersburg, studied at the ballet school (now the famous Vaganova Academy) and danced in this theater.

Hi ~ l'm just kind of new to ballet. l watched the Nutcracker in '68 with Merle Park, and Nurayev on YT. lt was quite different, as far as the story goes. When l started to learn about the craft. l wanted to know some history too. lts SO INTERESTING! l will try to watch the Russians, as l know they're great at it!
@Raniphae20 күн бұрын
the Joffrey's current choreography is definitely a very unique take on it! I appreciate that with the new choreography they're trying to make it not such a rich person's story, but the overall result is definitely less of a good "intro" to what makes The Nutcracker ballet truly itself, and I definitely occasionally find myself missing the more classic version I grew up with. (...plus, I'm still annoyed on behalf of the ballerina who used to be the star of the Trepak dance, now playing second fiddle to the "Buffalo Bill" lasso performer. she deserves better!)

I totally agree.. I’ve worked with principal dancers of ABT & NY City Ballet for almost a decade. Sad to say that they when you’ve watched Bolshoi, Mariinsky and Paris Opera Ballet performed its hard for you to appreciate the ballet company’s in the US. I always get tickets for the gala performances but I always give it away.. I love Svetlana Zakharova for me she is the best Prima Ballerina.. another favorite among the younger Bolshoi Principal dancer is Alena Kovaleva.. she is an elegant dancer..

For any family that wants to introduce their children to culture, a trip to the Nutcracker Ballet on Christmas Eve is necessary. And it is desirable that this ballet should always be in different productions, but always to the magical music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Even at the end of the 19th century, at the premiere in St. Petersburg, this ballet was noted by contemporaries as a luxury for the eyes. This luxury, performed by the Russian theaters - the Mariinsky in St. Petersburg and the Bolshoi in Moscow - sets new standards of beauty, and every year. It is indecent to come to this performance on Christmas Eve in plain clothes. Women should look as gorgeous as the production itself.
@francisheperi41805 күн бұрын
Agree. Evening attire: white ties, tiaras, ball gowns, jewellery. Maybe for the opening performance for the Uppercrust, charge them double. That beautiful theatre needs to be garnished with beautifully dressed people.

This is the same theater where this ballet was first performed: the first production of The Nutcracker was at the Maryinsky Theatre in December 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Probably the most visually stunning production of this ballet I've ever seen, despite the giant deviation from the original with its pale color palette and modified characters. It's less children's Christmas party and dream, and more A Night at the Crystal Palace. Apparently a single person designed all the sets and all the costumes. He obviously had a vision and held to it. My only real beef is their change to the titular character; it's called THE NUTCRACKER for a reason! They replaced the nutcracker soldier with an ugly, creepy stuffed doll with an alarming proboscis-- he looked half man, half elephant seal.
