Finally just got some private land. About 8 acres of woods and a power line running on the back part of the property. This will be my first time managing a property! Me and my dad both.

I bought 15 acres 3 years ago. Roughly half of it is timber but it backs up to big woods. Finally got to hunt this year and me and my buddy smoked two nice bucks with our bows. No better feeling man.

I have a small piece of land 40 acres but when the gun season opens it fills up with deer trying to get away from the pressure.

Any tips? Open to all advice. It’s pretty much all open woods. Thought about hinge cutting this march and putting in two 1/4 acre food plots as well as switch grass.

What’s around your property?
@tylerwombold347813 сағат бұрын
Just big woods and a power line running through the back. And neighboring properties are the same. Big woods is about it.

Congrats on the double. Pretty special. I was lucky enough to do that once. Always love your content and advice. Hoping this year I can finally snag some land of my own. This video is great because it will be on the smaller side, most likely.

That’s awesome your son-in-law got an 8 and was shaking too bad to shoot a doe. That’s what it’s all about. I had an extremely successful season even with some mishaps and lessons learned. Was talking to my stepson yesterday and was saying I was already looking forward to next season. Usually this time of the year I am wore down and glad to be over. A break from talking deer? Never! 😂 Mentioning the size. I have 8.62 acres including the house and yard. Like you guys are saying. It’s as much work. Every inch matters. I work my butt off and overthink everything I do to maximize the land. It’s extremely tough to ration out. It’s funny though. Deer use almost every bit of the 7 acre lot we have adjoining our home lot. The deer are so used to the houses around, they come from everywhere, but are still spookable and wary. It’s definitely not shooting fish in a barrel.

Lots of good points in this video. For discussion: in big woods settings, I've seen often enough that a cabin where human activity is pretty common leading up to season and where bait is put out, doe family groups and young bucks can really get attracted to and habituated to human activity. I see this a lot in big woods in Saskatchewan, NW Ontario, and Quebec, and I'm sure many other big woods settings. In real low pressure areas with tough climate conditions during the season (think Saskatchewan), you can even end up with very mature bucks that tolerate human presence. So depending where you are at in remote areas and depending on pressure, human activity can end up being pretty neutral or even beneficial to holding deer if the deer learn that humans = food.

I hunt on 5 acres in MO but only about 4 acres you can actually hunt on not really any cover there’s switchgrass planted but it’s not doing well there’s only about a acre strip of timber on the property the rest is old hay field I plan on planting a food plot next summer so since there’s no cover the deer come in really skittish what would you do to improve it for next season? Also it is surrounded by hundreds acre AG fields.

Jeff, do yall have any good videos explaining funnels and ridges valleys ect?
@JonLewis-ct2mk7 сағат бұрын
Hello Jeff....im probably gonna take these concepts/ideas.and use it on a small scale.(hand tools).bigwoods mixed forrest hard and softwood.50 year old trees max.thick.one old cut probqbly about 25 acres in size.take about 4 acres of that and plant corn and alphalfa and clover.then turnip towards the end of summer or start of september.hinge cut about 100 yards from that for does then hinge cut abouy 200-300yards for the bucks.between the does and bucks make a mock scrape and watering gole hopefully for the bucks.and watering hole at main deer feed area so the does wouls have a less chance of invading buck space.
@JonLewis-ct2mk7 сағат бұрын
Not go na hunt the main feeding area.just mock scrape and water hole.as time passes I'll add to the main feeding area and cut the younger trees until I get about 6-7 acres of main food plots then add micro food plots .make a staging area so I could make my stand a little further down wind of that.alot of work by hand but most of the heavy work was already done by tree harvesters.might take 3-4 years to place an arrow or bullet.Deer Density around my area is about 1.5 deer per square mile. Lots of pressure day amd night.Got a spot that i dont really have to alternate nearby holding a 6 bucks ages ranging about 1.5 -4.5 year Olds.got the oldest buck there this season.huge 6 pointer cant imagine what it looked like when it was in it prime.left the butchers at 182lbs of meat..Gonna do your online course after new years.
@JonLewis-ct2mk7 сағат бұрын
Got about 50 acres to play with.5 acres of that food plots.4 acres main feed.1 acre divided into 4 separate.then about 12.5 acres of hard wood regeneration thanks to tree harvesters.

I have a small parcel and wanting to add cover to it wondering what trees/bushes are the best to plant for thick cover and long lasting?

Good morning from the UP. Im planning this year to manage my 10 acres. My house is on the south end, then 2 acres of field, and the north end is all hardwoods. Powerline and Ag field fenced in and river on the west and neighbor on the east side. Im think of switch grass blend around the edges of the field for covering and plant food in the middle of that switch grass cover. Just curious if Im on the right track with that. Thank you. 31:40

Is there a list of your preferred contractors to use? how do we find them?
@whitetailhabitatsolutions975113 сағат бұрын
Not really, only because work in 30 states every year. We also don't refer contractors for money, like a lot of folks. We refer for who we think would do the best job for the client....no kick back. Brandin from 1st choice food plots I refer a LOT! Also Jared from whitetail plots and plans for heavy equipment near us.

Can you talk about small parcel surrounded by marsh/swamp, w/ small woods and then large ag outside along the dry land.
@jvollmer407 сағат бұрын
How about an ultra micro parcel? I turned one of my 3 acres to food plot this fall. It brings in a lot of deer every night from the neighbors 60 acre timber farm (mostly does and a few 1-2 year old bucks). I have tree lines along both edges of the property and some thick pines separating the food plot from the house but otherwise it's open field. Is it worth building cover around the food plot going forward or am I just fattening deer for the neighbor? I've never actually had any interest in hunting deer until I decided to take it up for the first time this year and it would be cool to get one on my own dirt.
@Asmith73604919 сағат бұрын
Thanks for the video. Pretty relevant to me personally. Would you be kind enough to touch on best ways for creating food plots within wooded areas that have a lot of shaded areas without having the ability to remove much canopy for sunlight? I understand that may not be a good option for a plot then, just wondering if there is a possibility. I feel other people may be in a similar situation...thanks Jeff!

big ag area here in nw iowa. What should i do with old barb wire fencing? Leave it, put gaps in it, or fully remove it? Most of the fencing is on the field edge where timber starts

@@hunterknudtson5213 I’ve watched the majority of Jeff’s videos and I don’t think I’ve heard him cover this topic. I think if you don’t have time to remove it all I’d put gaps in it is strategic locations that benefit you

I’ve got 13 acres. 8 is huntable. I’m surrounded by big ag with some intermittent cover on one side and pasture land on the other. I have a creek bottom running through the backside of my land. Right side of my property is open hardwoods. Mostly oak and walnut. Left side is thicker. I have sign they are bedding in the thick stuff around the creek. Problem I have is they spend zero daylight hours on my property. How can this be fixed?
