The Gamechanger was originally created by Blane Chocklett and consists of multiple "spines" to make a moveable tail. The pattern has soon become a more "style" of flies rather than one specific pattern. People use feathers to make feathered gamechangers, You can make your own dubbing brush to create one with specific materials, or you can go with Chockletts own game changer chenille that he created to make tying these a little easier. I went with the latter for this fly, however you are welcome to experiment with different materials to make it your own design. Whatever material you use, the trick with this fly is making sure that it tapers correctly, so that way the tail moves fluidly in the water. They work great for just about any species of fish that target small baitfish. Bass, pike, predatory brown trout, and even some saltwater species like redfish and tarpon.
Not only can you make a very realistic looking baitfish imitation with this style of fly, but you can also make a realistic swimming imitation. There are times where I will go out and throw everything in my box at bass or other weary fish and will get some followers, but none seem to want to commit. Then I throw one of these on, and the same bass that followed the other flies all the way up only to change their mind last minute will not hesitate to engulf the game changer. The combination of the amazing movement, and the great look of this fly usually will entice even the most shy fish.

Nice fly, the Game changer flies are way awesome! The fly is an expensive fly to tie. I bought the book, like the theory, enjoy fishing the fly, but a Clouser is so much cheaper and just as effective in my opinion. I tied a few Game changers for a challenge and conversation starter. Thanks for making the video, it was very well done!

Thanks for the tutorial. That pattern looks as good in the tank as it does in the vice. Ive tied a few of these just to see if I could, with mixed results. They take me a long time cause I make the shanks and use dubbing loops. I've also tried a few with the EP minnow style top and bottom ties. I need to try a few more.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
Thanks glad you like the video. Yeah get the pre made shanks, at least one starter pack. That way you can focus your energy and time on tying it and get the pattern down. Also try the pre made chenille as well because that will take out user error on the loops. See if you can get down the tying and trimming before adding some more steps in.

@@McFlyAnglermy dubbing loops do have user errors.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Жыл бұрын
All of ours do. We are human, its impossible to be perfect. That's what I mean, if you get some chenille, you can be using the same size all the way up and get the pattern down before introducing some dubbing loops to the mix. After you get a dozen or so of these tied, Im sure you can implement your own shanks, dubbing loops, etc without much issue.

Great video! Thanks for making this! I was making micro changers with the Finesse body chenille, and I felt the density just isn’t there. I thought the regular gamechanger chenille was too thick for the 6mm and 8mm shanks. I’m going to try it now! Also I like how you decided to cut all the fibers at once instead of cutting it to size one shank at a time. Most videos I see talk about cutting the fibers as you go, but now I am convinced your way is much better! Great color combo of the fly, it really looks like a bluegill! Quick question, I noticed you did not wrap any chenille on the tail shank, is there a significant reason why it was not added? Just not enough room, too time consuming of making sure not to cut the feathers? If the feather was tied closer to the eye of the tail shank, would it effect movement?
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Yeah you need the density for this fly for sure. I think cutting as you go will leave the fly looking funky. I tried that once and didn’t like it. Either way, make sure you touch it up, spend time trimming and such. It will make it look better if you go slow and touch up at each final step. Glad you liked the colors I chose, I’ve done tons of colors for different people, the colors are endless. As for the tail section, yeah you could add fiber at the tail, I didn’t because I find it’s not needed. It takes extra time and I find that it is not worth the time. As for tying the feathers closer to the eye, it becomes difficult to trim them out of the eye. The camera shows super close up, more so than the naked eye, so there is far less space than it looks. Very difficult to get that amount of feather tied in without some length there to grip it. But if you can manage a way, I don’t think it would effect the movement. Another thing you could do is cut off the tail tag end that hangs down with fine wire cutters if you want. I choose not to because it’s not very noticeable. But if you want to refine it even more you could do that. I find it takes me a good 45 minutes to an hour each one of these flies, so to sell them for $17.99, I’ve gotta save time somewhere. Otherwise I’ll be making less than minimum wage tying! Haha! But if your tying for yourself, you can spend all the time you want refining the fly even further. Think of this tutorial as more of a guide, and not something you have to copy exactly. Try different techniques than I did, and see what works best for you.

Hey there, so happy to hear he likes and watches the channel. Good on you getting him into it also and giving the younger generation your tying gear. yes UV can come off. That’s why I like this super thin stuff, it soaks in deeper and makes more of a bond to the thread rather than just coating it like a shell. Although UV is hard, and can crack when hitting rocks or fish teeth. It had happened to me before occasionally as well.

Not that it amounts to a lot of spare time, but once I thought over, that I wasted three actions (I learned how to do time studies in school) when picking up the scissors, clipping the thread, and putting down the scissors again, I just started with the end of the thread not being longer, than in would be covered by it self. Same approach to "all" other time wasting things when possible, unless I really enjoy the "wasting"..

@@McFlyAngler I think I might be commenting on an other of your videos, because I couldn't find the thing, I am talking about in this one while skimming. But in your Squishy Head Streamer Green Shad video you clip at 1.27, where I usually just start with the thread so short, that there won't be any "snip"(?) to clip. And since you don't use those scissors (never worked for me), that hang on a finger, you have three actions, that I don't (I don't tie at all any more - or fish) have. And if you can tie a fly in fx 3 minutes, 3 seconds to snip-clip will amount to one more fly for every 60 = about 3 flys a day - in theory.

Biggest issue I have had with a game changer, even the smaller ones is trout will short strike the tail on them. Other than that, they're great.

Thanks. And yeah, bass pro has some gamechanger for $34.99!!! I was like wow! I’m super undercharging if that’s the going rate. Lol! So if your going to use a tail hook, I would use the larger shanks. These are a bit too thin to hold a large brown trout. I would be afraid of them breaking or bending under the pressure. The larger size spines (not micro ones) are thicker wire and quite durable.

They are my most expensive style fly. Most of my other flies cost $1.90-$8.00 each. Just these take about an hour or more to tie each of them.

If you need help with it I offer one on one video or phone calls to help give advice and such on tying on my patreon. Check it out if your interested
