I obtained my MBA and a host of certifications, but my career didn't start until I asked the 'right person' OUTSIDE of the company. A prior coworker was my "in" at a new company; she was married to a manager. Without her reference, I would not have my current job.

Being the only visible minority, it can feel like you're held to a higher standard and you are scrutinized alot more. Alot of it is so subtle too. For instance, any mistakes you make is seen as more "serious" and "magnified" with harsher punishments. Whereas, the white coworkers who make exact, same mistake are given a pass ("Oh, it's a learning curve.", "Oh, it's no big deal. Everybody makes mistakes. They're only human."). Visible minority makes a mistake it's seen as "Oh, he's incompetent at his job and doesn't know anything!". It's almost like you have to work 10x harder than white coworkers just to prove yourself.

I remember working for a very well known fortune 500 company in my 20's & was insulted by both my white coworkers & BM, unfortunately! My first week there I was in a conversation with a bellman & he immediately asked, "what city did you say you were from again because I saw your photo on the new employee wall?" When I told him, (mind you I was hesitant), he almost choked & asked very loudly, "wait a min, "so let me get this straight, a little birdie told me you're not married either, w/no kids?" I responded. Then he continues his foolishness with, "mannn...sooo um you're a black girl, in her 20's, college graduate, not married, no kids, no baby daddys, like at all?" "Wow, you're a unicorn!" He quickly wiped the stupid smile off his face when I responded, "man, I wish I could say the same about you, I run into assholes, way too often!" Smh🙄🤦‍♀️

This is a great video. It allows for people to hear your experiences in a positive manner. I hear what you are saying, and it is valid. Some things may be because of the way one was raised, others because a work environment is not a friend or casual environment. I learned that back in my 20's. I had to dress appropriately, speak with forethought, and wear appropriate hair for what I did. Women were entering the workplace in droves. At one point suits, looked like scaled down men's apparel 😆 In certain work environments, profanity or disrespectful terms are unprofessional. Just as wearing a bikini to a concert, or a gown to a picnic is inappropriate. There is a time and place for everything. Hair too! If working in a dental office, or a restaurant, surgery, or working as an esthetician, wearing one's hair down, if long, nails that are in fashion or long, certain types of jewelry, is cumbersome,inappropriate and even unsanitary. Why? Sanitation codes and health codes, workplace safety etc.. One may wear dreads up, long hair straight or any texture, in a gorgeous scarf, etc. I have long a curly hair. I have to pull it up or back, because of my profession. My nails must be short. Part of what has experienced is about being a woman, as well as a woman of ethnicity, and part because people are unaware. This video helps with that. We are all learning and all need to be patient with ourselves, others, and open to discussion.

I grew up in a society far far more racist than America is today and I have an amazing life and I always have. Seek microaggressions and you shall find them. If you assume that 5% of the population, of every race and ethnicity, is sociopathic and racist, and that another 5% is plain ignorant, you will have a realistic sense of how much we all have to deal with in hearing daily insults and stupid comments. Don't aspire to be a victim. Ignore sociopaths and fools and create a circle of awesome friends and coworkers. In 2021, you can create a beautiful successful life. Work culture requires everyone to conform to work standards. For example, to succeed in a professional work environment, a white or Latino person, who grew up in a poor disadvantaged community has to adapt her language and behavior. A white person who grew up in a hillbilly culture is going to achieve her greatest potential at work and sidestep a significant amount of bigotry by dropping hillbilly accent, vocabulary and mannerisms and speaking in standard English. Considering that there is so much media from which Americans from all environments can learn standard English, there is no reason why anyone should not be able to speak it fluently enough to make a good impression. Like it or not, there is a certain amount of conformity required to gain acceptance. Every culture has the same characteristics. If we were living in Nigeria or in Viet Nam, we would be expected to speak and behave according to preset standards.

Uhh you haven't lived as a black person. Being those things isn't enough while working with other races. Non black ppl want to feel that all blacks are beneath them and if you have something about you as a black person that a non black person sees as a threat, they will try to make your life miserable, no matter how respectful you are. Black ppl deal with unnecessary hate/discrimination/micro-aggression in the work place, mostly due to envy.
