Very helpful avenues of thought as I mentally sort out some pretty severe damage--thank you. Have lived on this site for 35 years, have never seen anything like this. Temp was below freezing for seven hours, with low of 26 F.

😑😭. That is something else, wow. Where is that? 26 for 7 hours is incredibly severe especially if your area got all that early spring warmth that pushed everything along early. It’s almost in the realm of a wildfire in how drastically an event like that can shift patterns for years to come.

@@jkochosc We're in south-central NH, theoretically zone 5b but often colder at night than other home weather tracking stations in our area, especially if the air is still. I'm determined to learn something from this experience that will be beneficial moving forward.

Hopefully you can do a video about Carpathian walnuts, in previous comments I did mention that I have 2 of them growing closely to each other in among an old rhododendron. Do you expect them to recover at all? I'm in zone 9 and despite us getting 27C for a couple days straight, they barely started to break bud, I was honestly kind of worried something was wrong with them, normally trees around here in the pacific northwest Vancouver island tend to bud out late March - April 🤔. We don't usually get late frosts, our average last frost date is mid-april/late-april. It helps that my garden sits upon gravel that was machine compacted in 1986, and radiates heat out during the night - very little top soil, but a good microclimate for providing bottom heat for elderberries and currants etc, just have to build top soil and continue adding to the lasagne! 😆

Carpathians are sort of strange to me. They seem to be super vigorous sometimes and other times they succumb to diseases, frosts, or big ones just start to die back. That said there are plenty of big old trees in my area so I do have faith in them in general. These will almost definitely all re-sprout and be fine but it’s a fairly big setback. The new ones germinating this spring haven’t emerged, so they seem pretty wise.
