Thanks for the review, but a huge negative of the GH6 is the lack of any provision for a battery grip (emphasis on the "grip"--mine rarely leaves my G9). As a stills photographer who rarely does video (and in those rare cases, the G9 has plenty of capability for my needs), often shoots in portrait mode, and uses the Leica 100-400 quite a bit, this is a deal-breaker. They've also dropped some stills-oriented features, plus I don't need the fan (and don't care for the extra bulk it requires) or most of the video features, impressive though they are. I'd also like to see the 5.76 MP EVF (but with the G9's 0.83x mag). If I were a videographer. I'd jump on the GH6, but despite the fact that the G9 is the sixth Lumix camera I've purchased, if a direct replacement for the G9 doesn't materialize in the not-too-distant future, I'll be seriously considering the OM-1. I have two Oly camaras already, but I prefer the Lumix ergo and most of my MFT lenses are Leica or Lumix.

Amazing review. Thanks. 12:08 doesnt it seem like gh6 is applying a lot of NR? I think GH5 would look the same similar NR is applied on the post. The pattern on the rotating dial is almost gone on the GH6. I have a G9 and still on the fence if I should get a GH6 (considering only due to low light and higher bitrate). Possible to share the gh5 and gh6 raw videos from 12:08? Would be very helpful to decide. Thank you.
@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I totally get what you mean, the gh6 does a lot of processing internally for noise. On the whole I think it does a great job, but maybe with future updates there will be more user controls in the menus to turn it up, down, or off. At the moment that’s just how the video comes out of the camera. I think with some good noise reduction software you could get about half way there with the gh5, but (in my experience anyway!) noise reduction plugins are so processor heavy they really add onto my editing and rendering time, so I’m glad there’s less work times do with the gh6 files 😊

There has been a comment here suggesting it doesn’t do very well with that specific stock lens, as it was the stock lens I got with the S1, and not the S5… but it’s an official lumix lens with the latest firmware, so I don’t know to be honest! You’d hope you could use any official lens and get the best results I will say, in real world situations, the s5 doesn’t feel that bad at all, I’ve never had any problems with it. Expensive start of the year for me, as I'm a Canon + Panasonic shooter and mainly video-centric. So you make the math and guess, which two bodies I've pre-ordered. Exciting times at the same though. Panasonic most certainly has knocked the goalposts out of the ballpark with the GH6 .. especially at that price point .. beating some of the cameras in the 4-5k bracket. The thing, I was sad to see, is that the live streaming has not been carried over to the GH6 from the GH5 II, but well, I still have the GH5 II for that. Everything else is just superb. It's also funny to see, that both the engineers at Canon and Panasonic have taken similar approaches to achieving higher quality footage. In the GH6, all modes up to 120fps are oversampled 5.7k. In the Canon R5C all modes up to 60fps are oversampled 8k. Both the GH6 and the Canon R5C introduced 4 channel audio recording in camera. Both cameras have been fitted with an internal fan to guarantee limitless recording. And there's lots more. I'm looking forward to the firmware updates though, like ProRes in 4k and 1080p, external recording to SSD, 4k120 raw via HDMI to Ninja V+, etc. Panasonic is the first after Blackmagic (to my knowledge) to utilize the USB-C port in a mirrorless (or DSLR) body to be able to store SSD, and that gives fantastic flexibility.
@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
I was also sad about the live streaming, but I suppose that’s a unique selling point for the gh5ii I MAYYYY have just part exchanged my S1 to pre order a gh6 🙈🎉📸

@@MicroFourNerds I've been using Panasonic since the GH4 for most video as Canon wasn't anywhere ready. So I stuck with my 5D Mk3 for photo and didn't upgrade until last year, when I got an EOS R. Still use the 5D Mk3 more and my Panasonic (by now a GH5 & GH5 II). So the EOS R5C will be the first Canon (for me), that will fit both brackets. But there is one thing you can't beat M43 for: when it has to be light weight and Panasonic just excels when it comes to IBIS and hand held shooting, so yes, a GH6 is also coming. It certainly makes for a better B camera and in some scenarios even A Camera, than the EOS R, which is just soulless.

I probably wouldn’t have bought the s5 if the gh6 was on the market. I’m selling my S1 to buy the gh6. Especially for filmmaking specifically! Great review, you look very pleased. The GH6 looks like a big step up from the GH5, especially of you can do back up recording to an external ssd. I'd like to take a good look at the internal recording data rates on the cfexpress card and see what the PQ is like. Also the price is quite high compared to the S1 and S5, so for those of us who film with cine lenses, the FF bodies with their better low light, DR, and depth of field control are still the way to go (imho)

@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
I think there might be an element of that, the gh6 was definitely the one in the best position. I tried to make it as fair as possible, but the space I had was very small. I also think, watching it back, because the wireless monitor was on the gh6, I tended to look down or away (at the monitor) when I was testing the gh6, which might have helped as well because my face wasn’t as visible.

Is the kit lens 12-60 f 2.8 - 4 good for this camera? I am looking to pick one up for run n gun style videography and take some photos/videos for my friend at his concerts
@MicroFourNerds Жыл бұрын
It's honestly my fave stock lens! I've reviewed it recently in my "what's in my camera bag? Travel edition" video 😊

I am going to give it a watch. Right now I can buy the GH6 for $1,300 used USD and $1,800 used USD with the that kit lens. I was wondering if I should just get the camera body and spend it the money on a lens. I need something that can be very versatile, has low-light capabilities. @@MicroFourNerds

For anyone that may care, I just did a VERY quick test, comparing the Phase One's 150mp (~550mb file), to the GH6 HR 100mp (a ~270mb file, in jpg format). The upshoot: The final visual resolution was VERY-VERY close. Amazing on any level, but particularly when you realize you are comparing a $50,000 camera, to a $2,200 one. (I did not compare color or dynamic range, or anything else.)

After watching Patrick Tomasso and Gerald Undone I was left feeling a bit underwhelmed by the GH6. But your review alongside Potato Jets was far more positive. I'm a full frame shooter but this camera for the first time has interested me in M43. The 10-25 f1.7 is exactly the focal range and fstop I use in my work. The thought of going into my work with one lens is really uplifting (literally). 😆 Question is it fast to move back and forth from photo to video for hybrid work.
@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
That lens is just amazing, and one of the strengths of the system how you can have one lens to replace several others! It’s very fast to switch between photo and video, there’s a few ways to do it. You can use your C modes on the dial - there are 4 - so you could have your favourite two video settings and then two photo settings and you’d just have to switch one dial for everything to change. This even presets shutter speeds and colour profiles so very fast. Another way to do it is set your most used video function, and shoot away in aperture mode, then whenever you press the red button for video it’ll automatically start recording in the last settings on the movie dial

Why didnt you use the GH5MK2 for its autofocus The GH5 is from 2017 and the MK2 is from 2021 and with a better sensor?

How do you judge AF in 120p? Is it continous? Does it good enough to follow such subjects as animals? How is C-AF in burst modes for photos?
@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
I’ve found the 120p af to be as reliable as the other modes, so really helpful for moving subjects. The continuous burst modes for photography have been great! I have a dedicated video coming up just about the photography features. I’ve been using the camera for some bird photography and have had a very high percentage of usable images compared to other cameras 😊

What do you think about the GH6 as a stills camera compared to the S5? Given the S5 is cheaper it's compelling, but I think GH6 is better value because of the cost of lenses over time, especially zooms.
@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
I’m in a pickle at the moment because Lightroom won’t open the gh6 raw files as the camera is so new. I’ve been converting them to TIFF but it takes ages. The ones I have edited seem superb! And I am really pleased with the low light quality on the gh6 for photography. I do love the very shallow depth of field for the s5, but you can always stick to fast primes in m43 and get a very similar effect. I love the 100mp handheld mode, and the 75fps is great. You get continuous auto focus at 35fps too for photo which is so impressive! I basically have a hard drive full of raw files I’m dying to get my hands on. I’ll upload a dedicated video as soon as I can properly tinker 😁😁😁😁😁

@@MicroFourNerds Awesome, looking forward to seeing that. I have 4 panny lenses and the GH6 + 12-60 kit looks really attractive, but also the S5 is coming with a free 85mm 1.8 which is a lens I love... tough decisions.

@@MicroFourNerds Continuous AF at 35 fps? That sounds more likely, given the other specs. Panasonic only claims 8 fps with AF for stills.

For me ProRes recording is big because I use ProRes all the time. This means I can add another camera to my kit without buying another Atomos recorder. I also like the USB power. I have a Mk 2 which uses USB power. This is much more convenient than using the NPF batteries on my other GH5’s.

So with the addition of the fan, does that mean there's no weather sealing anymore?
@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
It is totally weather sealed still, even with the fan 😊 somehow! It’s gone through the same testing as other weather sealed certified cameras and passed.

would you say the color has changed between Gh5, Gh6 and S5? They look different!
@MicroFourNerds2 жыл бұрын
I think they all have that “lumix colour” that’s so good, I think they look quite different in the test shots just due to the different lenses and angles, though I did try to match them as best as I could 😊. (The gh5 shot where i walk towards camera outside looks very different from the gh6 because I left that one in Cine D by accident and the gh6 was in v-log)
