Chronic activation of microglial cells creates an inflammatory effect in the brain, which has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. As Diego Gomez-Nicola, PhD, of the University of Southampton, Southampton, UK, explains, it has been understood for some time that microglial activation is related to innate immunity, but the exact mechanism of this association is unknown. In this video, recorded at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference (AAIC) 2018, held in Chicago, IL, he discusses his aims to investigate this subject using mechanistic studies to isolate specific components of the response, increasing overall disease understanding and hopefully leading to improved treatment.
