A close look at how the Bastl Microgranny file management and some reflections on my experience using this otherwise fun device. For renaming my own samples, I ended up having to use the PC version of Advanced Renamer: advancedrename...
The key thing that was missing from my other batch processing tools (Bridge, Adobe Audition) was the ability to do incremental alphabetical file names, which is required for the Microgranny.

Very useful. Had mine for a year now and lke you find it useful to distract people from my (usually) desperate knob twiddling between songs. I get a lot of milegage from the preloaded sounds through slowing everything down but recently have been struggling to find stuff as it tends to be all over the shop in random slots. So, I came looking for a better understanding of the file management and this helps though in my case I just need to move relevant files in a more coherent fashion to my workflow.

thank you for this video.. the file management on the MG is so convoluted, i wish i had known that before getting one. like you i want to replace all of the factory samples with my own but god knows how long that will take.

Thanks for posting this, I would have struggled to understand at all without this guidance! I think it is also worth stating explicitly that the sample file names can be any 2 character name (using only alphanumeric characters).

Windows Command line can batch rename a batch of files by pasting a list from a spreadsheet . Eg ren “jdfile1.wav” “2z.wav”. You can also use command line to make a list of filenames in the folder into your spreadsheet

That's a question for BASTL. I skimmed the manual and didn't see that spec called out. Your main limitation is the size of the card of course, but as for any per-file size limitation, I am not sure. In my uses, the files have been under a minute, but I don't see any reason you can't use long files too.

The black microGranny is also VERY hard to read.

What did you move on to using instead of the microgranny? I'm looking to do something similar with vocal samples

Thanks for watching. Ultimately, I tried using a Boss RC-3, for which I have also made a video: studio.kzbin.infoYAmOB3yLn-A/edit However, due to the workflow I was going for, I didn't really find that method to work as well as I would like. Ultimately, I just determined that I wasn't going to get the control I wanted without using Ableton, so I kind of came full circle since that is where I started with the material in question. It all comes down to your desired workflow, and patience with all the nuances of this type of gear.

Hi great vid! So you need a renamer program when you load sample on it? And is the uploading process automatized or do I need another program to save my own samples? Thank you so much! Subscribed for more

I use Adobe Bridge to do bulk renaming, but there are other options. The uploading process isn't automated. You have to physically remove the card from the unit, put it in your computer, copy your files, then put the card back.

Thanks for this, can I ask how you got the numbering convention on the spreadsheet and is it available anywhere? I'm still finding mine hard to cope with. I have about 10 samples I want on the granny so I cleared everything off the card and backed it up. Then I Added 4 samples in to test it, numbering them 00,01,02,03 hoping when I switched it on that these would be the first four samples available. But here not and it's still hard to find them as it keeps searching a lot. I'm scratching my head how to make a small sample set easy to find and access super quick! Thanks Ed

Hey Edward - I just relocated and am trying to catch up on some things... so sorry if this is brief... The numbering convention in my spreadsheet is based on the way the files are stored, which is taken directly from the documentation on the device. I'm not at my studio computer right now, so I can't send you the sheet. But you don't really need it. The point is to understand the structure, then you can make your own. You wouldn't necessarily need to use the first preset to load your custom sounds. You could select any. I *think* it will remember the preset you are using when you turn it off. Again, this is why I made the video and why I ultimately moved away from this device. Just way too much overhead for simple operations!
