The way you have your baby with you in all that you do....I love it! JUST like the seeds we sow....we can choose to have healthy,productive children that thrive...and have amazing memories with mom and dad as aposed to sitting around the house playing video games and talking on socal media.

Ha I know back then he wouldn’t let us put him down so we had to work with him on our back if we wanted to get things done! Your right though, I spent most of my childhood watching tv and playing video games. Did not leave me on the best state of mind entering adulthood. Had to re-discover the importance of good food, nature, and exercise!

Pro tip: broadcast the seeds onto un-tamped soil. Then you only have to tamp once and you aren't working against yourself trying to force the seeds into overly dense soil. A small quibble in a really fantastic video. Thanks for making it.

Love to see your son bonding with you . Its the first time I have been on your Channel as I thinking of growing microgreens, apart from your great information the bonus was that lovely sight of you working away so calmly with your son sitting so contentedly in his little backpack. I rate you 'hands on Dad'.
@GreenshineFarmers
@GreenshineFarmers 4 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate that. Big reason why I wanted to start farming was so I could be at home with my family rather than away for most of the day. Working from home has it's trade-offs, but I'm glad it's the path we've taken. The farm is extremely demanding but very rewarding as well. Back when we made this video putting our youngest in the backpack was the only way we could get anything done!

Awe great video guys! We are venturing down the micro crop lane this fall and winter! I can’t wait to taste all the flavors!! Also helpful tips: Your bunnies can be trained to go in a litter box and do well around the house. They need each other for health and emotional support. Eye infections, ear issues etc - the saliva from one bunny cures the other bunnies med issues. Amazing isn’t it!?! They are very social but move around so much at night so I would recommend sleeping with them lol! Also, when they get mad they will poop next to you. 😜😂😂😂

thanks for the video. But please keep in mind - harvesting, washing and packaging the microgreens is not farming any more, but processing. Therefore you have to comply to HACCP. I am sorry to say - but you are miles away from those regulations. Please google to get the information on HACCP. If you need any help, let me know. In 2011 we had a desastrous incident in Germany caused by fenugreek sprouts - 53 people died and almost 4000 got ill. The product you sell is cut and washed - this is a possible source for infection - so it has to be done under very hygienic conditions. I wish you all the best and success - Wolf from Germany
@DanHughesNC
@DanHughesNC 6 жыл бұрын
HACCP does not apply to farms (basically). Standards for Produce Safety (which is also part of FSMA) does apply. However, Standards for Produce Safety exempts Small Business, Very Small Business and farms that produce less than $500,000 of produce that is indented to consumed 275 miles or less from where it is grown or within the same state (or Indian Reservation).

Wolf, thanks for bringing this up. I did some reading behind it, and it turns out the bacteria responsible for the outbreak was imported into Germany in seeds sourced from Egypt. It is very likely that the bacteria would have flourished under any conditions that did not involve sterilization of the seeds (i.e. via a hydrogen peroxide bath). I think hygiene regulations gave overreached in the last 5 decades. Humans evolved living in the dirt, as visiting any primitive community bears out. Further, the escalating rate of allergies and autoimmune disease is linked by many to the more sterile world some promote. The greatest risk to human civilization is poor public and personal hygiene by some cultures and people, including a more liberal attitude towards deviant sex practices

It's very important to always wash your hands and use latex gloves when harvesting or anytime you touch the plants. It's also highly recommended to use a sterile, or disinfected cutting tool.
@Pogohontas.
@Pogohontas. 6 жыл бұрын
GlobalTubeTruth I think getting some human oils and skin cells is better than the powder on latex gloves. As long as they're not sick it should be fine. And if you're eating the greens enough you won't even get sick.
@GreenshineFarmers

We wash and sterilize everything, and use gloves when sick.
@mariawhitcomb8317
@mariawhitcomb8317 4 жыл бұрын
GlobalTubeTruth - I am all for adhering to GAP rules, but personally would never use using latex gloves in this case. If you have one person who eats greens and goes into anaphylactic shock after you've touched the greens with latex, you will have a huge problem. Good sanitation (of hands, growing trays and surfaces etc.) is essential, and probably a better option in my opinion and as a commercial farmer. Food safe gloves (nitrile, vinyl and plastic) are all widely available as well.

@GreenshineFarmers
@GreenshineFarmers 4 жыл бұрын
Tiensvold Farm is who we use for our pea, radish, and sunflower seeds. In terms of gloves, it is not a requirement. Instead we sanitize our hands religiously. However we do wear gloves if there is a reason to, i.e. exposed cuts, etc. As for the knife, we do spray and wipe with a sanitizer after sharpening. I didn’t include that in the video and I’ve definitely heard about it from more than one person 😉

You're pulling the trays off the pallets and stacking them on top of each other. So any contaminates on the bottom of the trays from those wet nasty pallets transfers to the tray under it. I would use a different method. Possibly 1/2" foam to set on top of each tray. JMHO

I'm becoming more and more fluorescent as time goes by (it has pros and cons. I'm safe from traffic when bycycling at night. And I get more invites to parties). I wonder if it has to do with all that time spent handling pallets without gloves? One of my colleagues is so bright (visually at least), that we turn the lights off when he's in the room. He's always been an avid pallet licker. We gave up years ago trying to make him give up the habit.

Most, if not all of the non colored pallets are pressure treated (that is, treated with heat and nothing else).

If I got some that smelled like creosote, I think I would use them to lay pots on no problem, but I would probably not build beds for plants with them. Maybe I would burn them (I would check the temp at which creosote burns first).
