It was a car driving by. If you look at it frame by frame, the light passes over the trees. It just looks like a flash due to this being a timelapse. ..or aleins. Whichever you think makes more sense.

They can be seen through the naked eye, not as vibrant as caught on camera, though. However, if you hit it during a storm, you can see them dancing and they get bright, nearly the same as a camera would pick up. It's really something to see.

Very cool, I live in Washington state and have been blessed enough to see the aurora borealis twice. The first time was on August 4th 1984 in Poulsbo Wa. I'll never forget because it was my 20th birthday, it was rainbow colored, I saw ribbons and also sort of like this one but the one thing I remember is that it had a black center that got larger and larger until the aurora disappeared. The second time I was on Camino Island WA and it was 1991, they were the green ribbon shaped ones.

This is really beautiful. Perhaps a silly question, though. At :41, it looks like the trees light up. Was this cast light from the aurora? Also, will the northern lights reflect on snow? I got to see them once in the Detroit area, but I'd love to get a look at them further north away from light pollution.

the aurora does no harm to anything. its just a solar flare bouncing off the magnetic field at the poles. or something like that. in any case its not hurting anything.

@ApexIXMR Since human eyes are extraordinarily sophisticated organs, you can see the northern lights by the naked eyes. However, the actual northern light is too dark to be captured by the normal video camera, except when the aurora breaks up or you use the special camera. This is one reason why there is no (very few) real-time video of aurora. The biggest reason for me is that the time-lapse photography can make the aurora image as a beautiful art.

Bullshit! It's the (solar wind), high energy particles hitting the magnetosphere streaming through space from the sun. It keeps you from being bombarded with deadly radiation every day, because the earth has a (molten mantle outer core) with gigantic iron central core that generates the magnetic lines of flux. They vibrate from the collisions, like the strings of a guitar generating visible wavelengths of light. Let go of myths and live in the "light" of truth, because in the long run it will give you peace that superstition can never match.

Fairbanks was misspelled in the video.. Dunno if the video maker caught that. I actually live in Alaska and I've seen the northern lights many of times. Recently I've seen it but it wasn't this vivid you'd have to go 'way' out of town to see it. I was told most common are green colors, I've only seen rainbow northern lights once in my life and it was around Dec around Christmas. Strange how the lights happen at different times of the year.
