Well that 21 minutes went quick!! Bob, you are a wonder! I will never get to Northumberland, but if I did, I would certainly want to meet you and John. You men are two of my mentors. I would never have thought of tearing into a DTI, until I watched that series, now I have cleaned two. Great work gentlemen.

I had two sticking DTI's would never have attempted to strip down until seeing the informative videos, both are now up and running like new. thanks Bob & John.

Thanks John and Bob. I just used the info from this video to reset the barrel on a 1930s Moore and Wright. It's a special for a Buma boring machine so I wanted to get it right. It measures at twice the normal rate as it measures the radius of the cutter but reads the expected bore size. Thanks again. Mart.

Thanks for these videos, both Bob and John. You really helped me to fix my Moore & Wright. A great resource for everyone

Thanks for the great video Bob. I had a mike years ago that was very tight and I thought the internal threads were messed up. It was probably that collar you showed us. I will have to find that old micrometer. Thanks again Norm in Arizona

Also, when you are on the site check out the watch glasses too. If you get the acrylic ones they have every size and dome-ness. They work great on DTIs and only cost a couple of quid! Loads of nice spares on there. Shame they don't keep DTI spares too :-(

You are upsetting all the gauge manufacturers they want you to buy new not give them a second lease of life. I like the tip of the glass case thank you.

Loved the matching jackets! Can you explain next instalment, how those old standards go out of whack after a few years, I mean are we talking microns, thous, hundredths? Thanks , enjoying this series way more than I thought i would, good hunting!

I remember seeing tom lipton show a standard that double checks for an out of square spindle face like for a one inch it would measure .00625 so 1" plus the thimble 90 Deg. if I remember right that's how it worked well anyway beautiful work that's right back in the to nice to use drawer for that one ha ha thanks

might be worth noting that it doesn't matter where the barrel and thimbal align to zero, it is only on the lhs to suit right handed people so, you could spin the barrel 180 and make it easier for southpaw's like John to read.

Barrel and thimble numbers will be inverted/mirrored though.

Great video on assembling disassembling the micrometers and adjusting them. One question though: Any specific reason you use the spanner wrench in the reverse way/direction? AFAIK They are made to pull not to push the adjustable tumblers and nuts as the wrench uses the notch as a leverage. I’ve never seen anyone using them is a pushing fashion as you do and made me curious.

Hi both, does Banggood do lumberjack jackets per chance??? Great content guys, have a great weekend.

My M&W micrometer has a problem that I can't sort. Despite tightening the ratchet screw, the outer barrel still moves freely on the inner barrel. Don't want to risk damaging it by doing something that's not right. Should I open up the split shaft that the ratchet screw fits into?

Hi Doubleboost, do you know Litton Machine Tool company Ltd. of London? I have a Lathe I can buy for about 500 dollars, but it's missing the gear for threads making, I don't know much more about it but it's not to hard to make the gears just buying the right cutters. any comments/advice?

Try Lacquer-Stik. I have some I've had for more than 20 years. Still useful, but not as good as new.

Hi Bob. Thanks for the informative videos. Any idea where I can find a spectacles case for my 300mm micrometer. (;-)

Look for a local woodworker to make you one, either for cash or in exchange. Just has to look like a cigar box, and be felt lined. Funny enough I have a 1m vernier, because my brother in law bought it on auction, for the wooden box it was in for $1. Not much use for it, but you can definitely tell somebody the exact, down to the 20th of a millimeter, length of something up to that 1m. have used it for that as well.

If you've had it a decade, it's not rusty.. and used it 2 dozen times.. your standard is OK still!
