Marc I am a hobbyist machinist your videos are the best info ever. Your a natural teacher. I have watched your vid on trig ( not my strong suit in school) and it makes more sense now then it ever did in the past. I want to mill gauge plates that represent Morris tapers so I can use them to set my taper attachment on the lathe but the trig isn’t coming together yet to do so. I would like to ask you for a video detailing all the steps necessary to use the machineries handbook for info and the procedures and formulas to make the necessary calculations. What is needed also to calculate the gauge block height for the sine bar in order to get the angle set for milling that angle onto say a 4 by 7 plate for future use. If one template for say a Morris taper 4 is shown then to do the other Morris tapers will be easy. Thank you Keith ( prairie boy from Saskatchewan)

Thanks Marc, I have watched several videos on mic usage. Yours was the most easily understood by far. Keep up the great work!

Marc, Thank you for the tutorial on micrometers! I also love your sense of humor. I love the little "signs" with jokes on them. I also laughed when you were talking about "shaking it too much and going blind." Please keep the videos and jokes coming. They really make my day! Have a good one! Dave

Thanks Marc. You are a great teacher. I have started your machinist school and watched your other videos. I can't wait for next lesson to turn blue.Stay warm and I see your not blind yet.Great job. Dave Aarons

Nice refresher, thanks Marc! I would add that it's important that the mic (or caliper) anvils are totally clean before use. I give them a wipe with my thumb and another wipe with dry paper. Try a measurement before and after a cleaning and you'll usually find that the first trial is a bit oversize.

Hi Marc, I own a Mastercraft caliper "with a battery" in it, it's a good aproximeter, that if shit happens, its only $10 when they come on clearance sale. Also have a full chest of more precise instruments to get the final reading, just like you mentioned to get PRECISION reading. Very good mention on how manipulate and get the last drop and the right pressure. Thanks, Pierre I even got myself a pair of glasses to invert the numbers for my lefty version...lol

Marc, great video I must admit to wincing when you brought out the calipers that could replace all the mikes. I have seen people as late thinking that calipers are precision measuring tools. I even saw someone at work using a pair of dial calipers to measure a spline over pins. But you did a wonderful job of explaining the facts of measurement. If you don't mind I will answer one of your question ask earlier. Micrometers are oiled with mike oil; originally it was whale oil but now just order some Starrett Micrometer Oil. Hold the mike with the thimble down and put a drop or two on the spindle and let it run down into the inside of the mike and into the threads. That being said you probably dont need to oil your mike unless you use it daily and then only once a year or so. Oil collects dust and over oiling will make you mike in accurate. Again Thank you Marc Marcus

Hi Marcus, have we been trained by the same people? I couldn't have answered better! But I did answer almost the same way! Here is a copy paste of the answer I gave to Randal: "Hi Randal, use a fine machine oil, do not use motor oils or hydraulic oils that contain additives that aren't good for precision Tools. Here is a link to show you what is required, it is only a suggestion since I do not wish to promote a particular company but hey! I do like this one! www.starrett.com/metrology/product-detail/1620 Oiling measuring tools requires restraint. A little bit is better that a lot and use quality lint free wipes when removing old oil from tools and when removing any excessive oil. Remember, oil attracts dust and dirt and fixes it in place so even though tools need oil to function properly, less is better! Thanks for watching and thanks for the great question. " I also get cramps when I see people using the calipers for precision measurements! So I am guessing that we are twins separated at birth? Thanks for watching and for taking the time to write, have fun and be safe! Marc L'Ecuyer

just noticed those hidden signs - now i'm going to have to go back and watch everything again ! i must have shaken mine too fast too many times as i have noticed a steep decline in my sight - oh well might have to invent a micrometer for the sight impaired - the brail micrometer as i may need it soon !( and please this is not meant to be a put down on people with sight impairment ) -just saying i don't see so well as i used to ok I truly wish i had a teacher like you when i was in high school - regardless of subject they had to teach me as i feel i would have been a better person for it ! you make the best videos i have seen that not only entertain but seriously educate the watcher out of a score of 100 i give you 300 !

I know I don't need to tell you, but others might like to hear another reason why a Mic is intrinsically more accurate than a caliper. It is because the read part is in line with the measuring points, unlike the caliper where it is off set. Well it is for all but depth, just to prove me wrong.
