I am a mechanic not a machinist and have been using vernier calipers for many years but never knew the principle by which they worked. You are one good teacher Marc. Thanks for great video instructions that are often of use to mechanics too.

Finally someone that explains the reason for the metric scale on these calipers. Ive always wondered this.

Hi Marc, happy to see you again. I want to thank you to share with us your skill and knowlwdge. I am an hobbyst machinist and I knew about vernier scale but looking at your video is a great way to refresh and training. And I've learned a lot from you. Greetings from Italy.

Hi Marc, Thanks for mentioning about the commenting. I've been using successfully vernier scales for over 30 years, today I end up knowing how that scale it's conceived. The best reason to learn reading vernier scales is, the battery outage...! Excellent teaching, see you soon, Pierre

Marc, this well taught 'how to use/read' the Vernier calipers is one of the best I've seen. I very much enjoyed the lesson, thanks for sharing your educated talents. ....13

Marc, One caliper you didn't cover is the dial caliper. I prefer them because they are easier for my older eyes to read. Another advantage is they never have dead batteries! I must have missed something as I didn't know you were ill. I'm sorry to hear that and hope you are better. It's no fun being sick! Thanks for the great lesson on reading vernier calipers. You make tough topics seem so easy! Take care of yourself! Dave

Was very surprised seeing a vernier caliper of the MATUI brand. I purchased one (in metric and fractional inches) about 50 years ago and do still use it!!

Great presentation, Marc! I learned to use vernier scales in the '60's, using first a slide rule (which I still have) and then a vernier caliper (which I also still have.) These days I use the 2 inexpensive electronic ones I have most of the time, but still use my 3 vernier calipers often. I also have 2 nice dial calipers which I almost never use and are essentially new in their boxes. I find them fragile, relatively. The electronic units, while quite useful, not only are worthless when the battery dies, but are even more useless when the electronics fail, and they will fail. They are usually not repairable, and if they are the repair costs as much as a new caliper. I do not like expensive throw away tools that can let you down when you need them so I buy cheap throw away tools...

Thanks for the kind words, I loved teaching to beginners more than anyone else because I have always believed that if you get a good start, everything that comes after is easier to understand. These videos for novice machinist permit me to continue doing something I love and contributing even in retirement, and that makes me feel good. So I guess in a way I should also be thanking you. I think you are a great teacher, I have learned much from them, I always wonder why here in the US we were never taught the metric system when basically the whole world uses it.

Nicely explained. Although I do know in detail how verniers work in every shape, I did not find any detail about the second lock on the right of the bigger caliper you have (some of them may have some marks on it or even a small vernier or a full size vernier on it). What is that used for normally? Fine adjustment? Is that wheel on the side friction controlled to have same pressure like a micrometer thimble? Or to retain a value of some sort like I describe below? A similar tool that I used (a caliper for measuring brake rotors and other hard to reach places, that have deep points like micrometer anvils that can pass the ridges on the edge of a used brake rotor. Where there were TWO full length sliding vernier scales with TWO screws in between the verniers One sets the distance between verniers and the other locks this distance. And before measurement both verniers would be set to zero (actually one is at zero, the other on the right should be set at 50.00mm) and the other screw would lock the two verniers together at that fixed distance. Slide the caliper over the rotor and lock the right vernier on the fixed scale. Unlock the left vernier from the right one (that is fixed now on the fixed scale) and slide it off the brake rotor - and so you can retain the value on the right scale where you can read it anywhere you want and not upside down with your head in the wheel arch. That was an old tool - an awkward function for holding a measure. Useful when you have to move the jaws in order to remove the caliper but don't want to lose the reading so you can read it afterward.

Thanks Marc, I like my dial caliper I would like to get one in MM.I am just learning for use on my Sherline lathe and mill ,but I to am an old tool and electronic ones are easy to read as I'm not blind yet .I have come a long way with your videos . Thanks again , Dave Aarons Marc, have you thought of doing a Quickie on partting off?

Thank you Marc for all the great videos.. my question is about measuring depth with the heal of the caliper, how exactly is this done? I was never taugh this technique and you did not cover it in detail either. Cheers!

Marc: This "Old Tool" has discovered that a magnifier must now be used to properly read a vernier. In the old days, it was different (sigh…). Nice work, as usual.
