Very interesting and informative video of YAP, Historic Men's House in Micronesia. The faluw being built along the shoreline next to the sea is a very interesting fact and I wonder why these Faluw needed to be built next to the sea, and why since the faluw seeing that is classified as a mens' house, needed to have a mispil to take care of the building. About how many different Faluw's exist on YAP would you estimate. and how far was this particular faluw located from the village of Centralia ? Very interesting & informative video !

Hi Michael, this building is located around 20 kilometers away from the capital of YAP, Colonia.. Most of the villages were built along the shoreline because fishing was a major source of food (plus, the forest vegetation was too thick and the forest was, most likely, an unhealthy environment to live in anyway).. .

I have a friend from Yap.He says houses like these built near shores are used for many things.From fishing,Canoe building to warrior barracks incase there's an impending battle/war.Hence why it's called the men houses.

How small is the population Vic? Do they have technologies like cellphone, Internet, or cars?

The whole island of YAP has about 12,000 people, very limited (and in bad shape) road network, full of historic sites (WW2 mostly), very slow internet connections (takes 24 hours to upload a 20 minute video) and yes, they do have cellphones..

Very interesting Vic. It shows that the culture of separating men and women and of patriarchy is still alive and well in some parts of our world in spite of the western evangelical promotion of equality and female emancipation. Maybe we should learn to respect more each other's differences and values ?
