Yip. Agreed, especially on the V7X. I keep finding myself just liking the SM57 quite a lot on snare. V7X is quite nice on snare, but a tad dark/thuddy - might be great on snare bottom. i5 is a little brittle. EV ND46 sounded quite nice on snare. But idk if it's necessarily better than 57, just different, a bit smoother / deeper sounding - again could be great on snare bottom, like the SM7b is. And could be a good bass cab mic too. Reckon the V7X could be good on bass cab too. Most good floor tom mics make good bass cab mics (Audix D4, Sennheiser MD421-II, RE-20)

Hearing in my pro speakers I tend to like the ND46 more than the others. Its lows are more controlled and the attack is beautiful.

To my ears the ND 46 sounds best on snare. I like the SE V7X and V-beat on the floor tom.

SoundsToBlowYourMind have the v7x for snare. This comparison doesn’t do it just because it’s not comparing the rejections. The EV mics don’t reject well, so with that said I think the V7x, and VBeat are the 2 best mics. (VBeat and 7x share the same capsule, different housings)

@@Seanalbertt The first EV on the snare drum is clearly picking up a lot of the snare side, that's true of the 57 too, but most noticeable on that EV. But here, isolated, the ND46 sounds great

The ND46 captures everything you need and a bit more... except bleed... so you can shape your sound at will.

Audix i5 on the floor Tom keeps a nice low end and enhances the attack so much that it sound like a loose bass drum! I would use that mic on my floor Tom

To me the sE v7x sounded almost like a perfected sm57 on the snare. I thought I’d like the Audix i5 more but it sounded muddy to me, I don’t know how to explain it but it didn’t sound as good as the sm57 or the v7x

I have to say, every single microphone sounds like a tom, for me the most important aspect of a "tom mic" is the off-axis rejection and coloration, which almost never appears on mic test videos...

SM57 doesn't seem to be the shining star.....but honestly I feel it preserves the most transients and is not hyped in any way that would cause problems in the mix. I liked the Audio I5, but it could come across as "boomy", and all the other mics likewise....but maybe I'm just so tuned into the sound of the SM57 that I know just what to do with it.

my exact same thought. You can´t go wrong with the SM57, you can with the others. . . . and with goods preamps, you can compress and equalize.... and make it sound like any of the others and I think even better because it just isn´t hyped.

WOW, I'm really impressed by the Electrovoice ND46. It makes me wonder how the leak sounds througt it, it seem's very useful. Nice detail but still with a really good tone!

Used ND46 on toms with darker cymbals and they always rejected super well. Little to no issues for my use cases

It hurts to say it. AUDIX on snare, V7X on floor tom. I use SM57 on snare top and AUDIX on snare side, plus e604's and e904's on toms. I might just have to change my setup?.... The clarity and punch achieved with the V7X on floor tom blew my mind, totally! Thank you Hanz Sedlár, for an awesome comparison!

Almost all of those mics are completely useable. Didn’t like the sennheisers on the floor tom. Every mic you plug in is going to need some tweaks. So, it really comes down to budget and availability these days for me.

Because I prefer clips on my drums mics, EV ND46 for the snare and sE V-Beat for the floor. I also feel pretty dumb for using the e604 on snare, it does better on the floor tom.

Why would you test tommicrophones on snare?? I use a Lewitt MDP-440. I choose it above the sm57... On floortom there is a D6 on top and a D4 at the bottom. This is no comparisson.

V7X is the same capsule as the V Beat so allowing for some slight bleed throught the vclamps, it's not surprising they sound pretty much the same.

I think I like the V7X better on floor tom than the VBeat, but both sound nice in terms of the SE brands.

the e604 and e904 is in werry diferent posisjon therefor they sound diferent. The sound werry simeler when placed same way. Mice posisjon is every thing you dont need expensive mices to have grate sound

904 somehow lessened the nasty snare ring, so it gets my vote there. EVs enhanced stick sound on the floor, so they were my least favorite.

From what I can gather from the photos, it looks like most of the mics are pointed at the centre of the drum, while the EVs are aimed at the rim, which makes it difficult to fairly compare their sounds.

Mic placement is off. Ive just watched several videos with the ND44 and ND46 and in every one of them the 44 had more low end than the 46.
