Tom Mic Shootout (SM57, e604, CAD TM211, AKG D440, EV ND46)

What was your favorite sounding mic?
Took me awhile to pick this time, but I'd have to go with the ND46 again!

When it comes to Tom's or Floor tom's, SM-57 or ND46 (I like the ND44 on rack toms). The SM57.... works on everything including the snare !

Maaaan I just love SM57's, tried and true quality mics (I just have the most experience with them and my live sound tech background)-- the e604 picked up more mid to low end but was really stifling-- would be good for War Metal/ Bestial Death stuff, the TM211 was dull but still had a good quality for it (better for maybe tribal/ world type music), the D440 really cut out low-mid reverb, again probably better for more world stuff or shitty pop music lol, the ND46 has a really nice balance to it, definitely that or the SM57, with post-mastering and balancing out variables like reverb there wouldn't be much difference between the two frontrunners. URITE!!!!!

Nice to hear other u riters with sound engineering experience! Honestly, the ND46 was the best mic for all the toms and even the snare, it just has a little more high and low end than the sm57, which is still a damn good mic. Worst mic had to be the CAD TM211: it just had this loud warble sound that muddied up the sound so much. E604 has great lows, but I wish it had some attack. I had already picked the ND46 as my go-to mic for snare in my last mic shootout, and none of the other mics sound good enough on toms for me tbh, so now I'm considering the Audix D2 & D4 mics for toms, next.

@@patriarchysound Hellyeah brohaim, most of my tech/ engineering experience is live and analog insofar as in the venue/ pro realm haha, but it's come in handy with the various projects i'm working on. Definitely the ND46 is a great choice, very good clarity and vibrant, dynamic range without having to futz around with things too much if at all in the mixer or audio program plus in post. It works! Uriiiiiiiiiiite :)
