Your tutorial vids are really priceless. May I use them on my workshops for church musicians? They - in general - don´t have a clue how mics work and how to choose and use them properly. So your vids would be a great help to me.

Thanks for your comment. Even if your ribbon mic has a low output, you may get sufficient level into a mic pre, which doesn't have a ribbon mode, simply by close mic'ing, or when you are recording a loud source (eg guitar cab). If the noise level is acceptable and you like the sound, use it. We're not familiar with the Cloudlifter but because the low level at the mic pre is due to impedance problems, you would need to be sure that the Cloudlifter is addressing this issue and not just amplifying the signal from the ribbon. Although many ribbon mic's don't need phantom power, and some may be damaged by it if it is engaged when the the mic is connected/unconnected, it is recommended to check and take care. However, many new ribbon mic's have active electronics which require power and protect the motor from damage. Hope this helps.

I like my new Cascade Fathead mic, but the out put is slight as you say. It is great on my guitars. For vocals it is warm but low output. My mic pre doesn't have a "ribbon" button and I don't think you are supposed to use any phantom power. If one wants to use a ribbon for vocals, is something like the Cloudlifter needed after the mic but before the preamp?

i use a microphone that is plugged into a desktop computer in the microphone plug on the back of the motherboard and i use audacity in ubuntu 16.04. i can here the microphone but it is not loud enough. their is a thing called "48V Phantom Power Supply" but this is for Laptop which does not give the microphone its full 5 watt power. on my desktop it has that and so i was told that it would not allow me to increase volume. but could i use a "PRE-AMP" before i plug into the computer to increase its volume. or basically how do i increase volume.

Hi Charles. We think you will need to post your question on a computer audio forum. It is possible that the input on your motherboard can accept a line level signal (louder than mic level) coming from a mic pre, but it may distort with too much level. Good luck.

Where is the electronics??

They are usually located in the body of the mic, and in the case of tube/valve microphones, also in their separate power supply units. Hope this helps.

Coil do moving in dynamic microphone, not the magnet! :) Very amateur and not informative video.
