When describing chemistry, beauty doesn't usually come to mind. However, the scientists at Beauty of Science have made it their mission to change that through their incredible visuals of the world beneath the microscope. In this video from their "Envisioning Chemistry" series, feast your eyes upon the spectacular crystal forests formed by the metal displacement reactions of silver and lead.

If only this film was longer... I could seriously watch that for hours and it'd be fun if it didn't overlook the equations this much

Redox reaction through electrolysis it looks like. Generally speaking, you're causing the metal ions from the solution to swap positions with the metal solid in the rod. The metal ions then convert their elemental form on the rod and form elemental metal crystals. It's generally the same way that we electroplate metals with gold, silver, copper, tin, or anything else really. With the silver, they used silver nitrate, with lead they used lead nitrate. The metal swaps with the nitrate ions to produce a new soluble metal nitrate and an insoluble metal precipitate. To people with a slightly lower understanding of chemistry, this can also be looked at as a single replacement reaction. :)

Thanks alot Justin! I think i actually understood quite many things you said, even i have some problems to get chemistry even at basic level.

so i know very little about chemistry. but i was curious if anyone knew, how do the crystals grow? they look like they are just adding more and more, and i know the crystals are from the lead at the bottom, but how do the atoms get from the bottom to the top?
@nesgonesto5
@nesgonesto5 Жыл бұрын
What you are seeing is the reaction itself of two compounds/when 2 compounds mixed each other-how they react each other in terms of their nature. The Zn(No3)2 is the crystal. It keeps on growing and spreading until it reached its growth finality. It's just simple Chemistry reactions seen on a microscopic level, really. But yeah..
