It's funny how OS X has stayed pretty much the same despite the occasional facelift in the ui. Gotta wonder what OS 11 will look like whenever Apple gets around to moving on from OS X.

Very cool comparison! I'm a apple user since 1994. And I always was confinced that I was using the more modern system. But if I look back in this history I must say, that Microsoft had have a more modern look more often then I would have thought. As OS X came out it was a explosion of design and MS was lost. But Windos 10 nowadays looks more modern as OS X.

I like the idea of giving a chronological history of both Microsoft and Apple. This video does contain some very good pointers to the development of both companies, at least with regard to their operating systems. Regrettably it’s too cluttered when trying to put both histories alongside each other. Also the music is distracting and after a short time irritating. I’d like to see this redone in a different format, with a narrative rather than the music. But it has some merit so I hope those who put it together don’t mind some constructive feedback.

I think the major turning point was Vista. After that a lot of users switched from Windows OS to Mac OS, which in turn made people more likely to choose an iPhone as their regular device. The rest is, as they say, history. Great video, I love looking at these old OS's. I can clearly remember OS 9 from my childhood. Oh the memories...

Peter Bonde no, a lot of people didn't. Going from regular pc to Apple is, and has always been tedious, Apple being as closed as it is, both in hardware, peripherals and software. Vista sucked but people mostly went back to XP until 7 came out.

+ComputerCentral98 Actually, it uses a fork of iOS. For a while it never had a name, but since the 4th generation Apple TV, it's referred to as tvOS. The very first one, and the very first one ONLY used a version of OS X (Although iOS is actually a fork of OS X in the first place), but the first apple TV was killed off relatively quickly and the next Apple TVs have been supported for much longer (The Apple TV 2 was supported until iOS 8, and I believe the Apple TV 3 is still supported, or at least it's still getting app updates from Apple)

Interesting to see the side-by-side differences between the two companies' offerings, but a few oversights: Apple's Lisa OS debuted in January 1983. Apple's A/UX -- which was Unix with a Mac GUI -- debuted back in February 1988. Apple's Newton OS was one of the first mobile OSes and debuted in August 1993.

It looks like Mac had a headstart on development of a visual GUI and developments of over Windows, perhaps because of the increased frequency of updates (1.1, 1.2 etc.) Could that be why Windows 10, to allow micro-updates?

Another great one to add would be the OS for Zune. It was so influential in the design on Windows Mobile and eventually Xbox and Windows as a whole. In fact you should add the iPod OS too.
