Great review. The competitors you mentioned for the 15" still can't detach the screen, or on the 13" as well, so it still remains unique even against the modern 2&1s that have Nvidia discreet graphics.

I think with the 3h battery life on the detachable display it makes the form factor very limited and for pros a def poor choice. If you just need the tablet for the day's workflow then you need to recharge it maybe twice to do your job. That is a waste of time and therefore money. As the Surface Book 3 is so expensive you can even buy a tablet and laptop combo to have a great tablet and a great laptop rather than a weak tablet and a constrained CPU SB3. I could not recommend it to anyone that needs productivity or efficiency. Just because you can make a 2 in 1 like this does not mean it is the best choice just because you have one device. To do the best you can at whatever you do it is best to have two devices that will do a much better job especially as they will probably cost less. So a Dell XPS 15/17 and a proper tablet and you could probably get an eGPU with a top card for less than the top-spec SB3!

Uniqueness does not always transform to usefulness you know. It's up to the customers to decide if they just want a fairly expensive unique product but not so useful when it is matched up against its better rivals that can provide far more useful stuff at a fairly reasonable size and just has a mature design.
@Belgarath777
@Belgarath777 4 жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England not everyone wants to carry around multiple devices. This fills that niche. Not everybody that uses the tablet requires more than 3 hours of battery life knowing it can still be reattached for those rare cases you might and still draw. Not everyone has your use case, so it's good to have options. This fills a certain do it all niche without the need to have mutiple devices. I'd also argue that it's not a 2&1. It's a 3&1, as it can do everything a 2&1 can do with an nvidia gtx GPU and still detach the tablet which the Dell Xps, the Lenovo C940, the Samsung Book Flex, and the HP Spectre cannot.

@@Belgarath777 I think the general feeling is that usually a major equipment manufacturer shouldn't promote a niche or gimmick product as its flagship and, even if they do, they typically offer the actual implementation people need. People would be more forgiving of the Surface Book if there were a Surface "Horizon", maintaining the touch screen for use with the Pen and Dial while providing the power of a high TDP CPU and a dedicated GPU, while also being a modular design with replaceable RAM, SSD, wireless, and battery. Drop the detachable screen, switch the position of the GPU and CPU to improve cooling, maintain the split battery design to max out performance. The Book is cool, but ultimately would cost me money in terms of performance losses. I want a Surface Horizon (they can even have the name for free).

@@andyH_England I'm just thinking about how I'd need to carry around both a tablet and a laptop and constantly switch between the devices (and somehow transfer the data over) to see how my models look ingame. That sounds pretty awful tbh. For 3D modeling I feel like Surface book is still the best solution but I'm open to suggestions.

COVID work from home situation has exposed the bull shit that MacBooks really are. You cannot multi function with that device. I use my SB2 with pen for remote design collaboration. use the GPU for CAD, rendering, gaming. Use it as a tablet on a cozy bed to watch Netflix. One device to rule it all. Can you do that with Macbooks???

Thank you for the great review! I own the Surface Book 1 since 2016 and didn't upgrade it because the changes were minute. It is the perfect workhorse for me. As an engineer is scribbling in meetings and showing your ideas to clients not a gimmick. And the graphics card helps with CAD on the go. Buying the 3 would be very tempting if the Neo wouldn't be coming soon. I guess I'll have to wait. Keep up your good work! Regards, Etna.

Gaming on SurfaceBook 2/3 is hampered by Microsoft's standard driver, which severely restricts the GPU. If you install the nVidia Game Ready driver from nVidia's website and set the power levels to full, the gaming capabilities nearly double.

@@keyboard_g that's not what the original commenter asked, the question was about the device's competence with animation programs, so anything from Flash, Maya, Blender, C4D, 3DS Max, TV paint or Toon Boom, to which the answer is yes, it handles all of those just fine, but only get it if u indeed 1. Actually draw thus using that tablet functionality properly 2. Would rather just have one device than have several 3. The Processor in the 15.6 inch model is really disappointing as if is still Quad core and the processor performance of Ice Lake is nothing to brag about over older 8th gen and even 10th gen Comet lake. They should have gone with Ryzen 4000u series processors offering 6 or 8 cores at the still 15W TDP. A Ryzen 5 4600U or a Ryzen 7 4800U would have been a perfect choice. These Ryzen processors can actually beat Intel's quad core 45W quad core or even the 6 core H series laptops in a lot of productivity tasks, if implemented correctly and they are miles ahead over the Intel's U series laptops, whether 10nm or 14nm.

@aelaan12 4 жыл бұрын
@@lordneojacks Well as you know it the latest MacBook Pro model was released in 2016 - not sure what you mean by same design for ever? The Mac and iMAc were only recently upgraded \ refreshed. MacBook Pro went to 16" models with new keyboards and old type of processors (hexacore and i9 8core). Sometimes we feel it has been the same forever but they are not, even these beautiful Surface Book 3, which I hoped would be announced with USB-c 4 but it is not. It is a great machine, actually most of the Surface line is decent gear, I have replaced many Surface Pro 5 and 6 screens and if you get a peek inside, well designed!!. What we have seen with Dell and HP and now also Lenovo is somewhat of a miracle. Screens that run edge to edge, gorgeous 4k quality screens, fast DDR4 ram, PCI4 SSD - these companies have pushed the industry to new heights whether we think of it that way or not. If I look back 5 years from where we were and where we are today, and excitingly the AMD versus Intel is heating up and maybe we will see all of a sudden more ARM like the iPad Pro. The MacBook is also good for something else: It is a money making machine for Apple, why would they make huge changes, as you said when something good comes it will be released. Lots of people are scuffing at the bezels, but they need to be larger if we want to hold this tablet (15 inch tablet) and one cannot have tiny bezels or has to reduce the weight. It is a balancing act, wishing you a safe and healthy week ahead.

I didn't say it's not real but it does require hardware access and disassembly. Companies and professional spies could use their in-house IT staff with security clearance to service the machine. Once you hand a machine over for service to a 3rd party, you are potentially handing over your data, regardless of what ports are on that machine.

This benefits from being a unique form factor. I would have liked to see more changes at least in the hardware. Removing some bezel, redoing the hinge to close that gap and moving the headphone jack would have been good changes. I do think windows is losing steam on these surface devices. I hope they aren’t focusing too much on things like the duo. The surface brand is a solid brand with name recognition. They shouldn’t be neglecting it too much.

Not sure how I am going to get this fixed out of warranty yet, not willing to pay $500 for what is clearly a production issue and not my fault. Love these reviews from the consumer/user point of view. As i read a lot of laptop reviews and have had a lot of laptops in all price ranges couple of things stands out to me above all. There is no perfect machine. None without some kind of compromise, specs are not the be all for comparing. Use case should be top priority and starting point in my opinion. What you are going to do with the laptop and matching that to your purchase will ultimately determine if you will be happy with the money your spending. Also quality of build and service. Many laptops have all the bells and whistles for a great price but overall quality and service is questionable and sometime really poor. Every manufacturer has its issues. So what about the SB 3? For me it threads all these needles for my use cases. I a solid build from a mostly solid quality and service company with the depth to address issues. It can do many things well and i love the keyboard and display {which is the majority of your interaction with it} Other machines can individually do better in their specific area. Example, SB 3 cant compete with say a Razer Blade for say gaming. So if thats what you do mostly thats the use case. But consider even there they are expensive, you can cook your breakfast on them after an hour or so of paly, the keyboards are nothing special and they are expensive! Service, forget it if anything goes wrong it better than 50=50 you will have a terrible service experience. All over the web you can see that attested to etc. So bottom line the SB 3 is a great all round machine , well bulit . by a solid company. I had 2 XPS 15's before i got a trackpad that just worked so it is not a pretty picture out there and nit picking every aspect of any unit I personally dont believe service for a good buying decision. Thats why I enjoy Lisa's reviews, she explains the pros and cons, calls BS when necessary but provides ienough info for an informted buyer to make a netter decision.you will love this machine! If your use case is met

Hi Lisa, big fan of your review! With this one I have to say that you might have been a bit too focused on a specific kind of user. For most professionals this laptops offer s everything they need. And you can detach the the keyboard base and make it a lot lighter. People always say you attach the display, but it is really the other way around. The other convertibles are a lot more heavy in tablet mode (including the quoted Samsung) as you can't detach anything as the laptop is in the base. Yes, other laptops (not convertibles) have more powerful 45W CPU, but many people want to have better battery life. A 15 W design will be more battery friendly and when travelling will be a thing again, this will become useful to many how are not constantly rendering videos etc.

Really don't get Microsoft offerings. These surface PCs are marketed as ultra premium, but the specs are so lacking. No Thunderbolt? What even the fuck? For $4 grand you could just buy a gaming laptop and get some real power. If you're serious about drawing, iPad is still the best option. If it's about ultra portability, there are so many option from other companies that are way less expensive. I just don't get Surface anymore. I plan on playing some games, do engineering, work, emails, skype, use it as a recipe book, stream videos netflix youtube and such. Or should I completely downgrade to the 16 gb ram version with 256 gb? I just can't stomach paying more than 3K for a device that has a 4 core cpu where new computers have 6 or 8 cores. Will I ever need more than 16 gb? For my application which ssd size should I get knowing I can hook up an external drive? Your feedback is appreciated.

No thunderbolt. That is ridiculous. I am looking around for a new laptop right now to replace my old MBP 17" from 2011 (bootcamped of course). This MS surface book 3 or MS surface laptop 3 are the things which I take for consideration right now. The design (silver only - alcantara or black is not in my consideration) of these is awesome, the 3:2 screen ratio is awesome, the screen and keyboard is just fine for me but hey, no thunderbolt nor in the book neither in the laptop is just stupid. And zero upgrade potentiality in the price the MS is calling for their laptops is a robbery, and outdated.

At 10:33 of the video you have a picture with the Surface Book 3 on the right side. My question is in that picture the Surface Book 3 almost looks white. I thought these were grey. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see them offer this in a white look, but does it really look that light in person? I currently have MacBook Pro 16" and I use it mostly in Windows 10 so I wonder if I'd be better off with 15" Surface Book 3 (I'm still in return period). I had tried the Surface Laptop 3 and that was a big time no. But this looks much more powerful. Don't get me wrong in terms of the MacBook Pro 16" as I do love it, but I use Windows 10 80% of the time. I also have the small feeling that perhaps the Surface Book 3 has even more of a glossy screen and I do like that. But MB Pro 16" is also quite awesome to be sure. Glad Microsoft offers something more powerful too.

I found the speakers to be totally inadequate on the Surface Book 3. Even at max volume, they are significantly quieter than the speakers on my Surface Laptop 2. With my A/C running in the background and the speakers on max volume, I can barely hear anything on Zoom or KZbin. Sadly, this is a total deal-breaker for me. Otherwise, the detachable tablet feature, cameras and keyboard are excellent. I also love the Surface pen.

Here is a wonderful ( NOT ) addition to my last post on the surface book 3 POS.. screen just cracked over night... People BEWARE.. DO NOT BUY A SURFACE PRODUCT.. I have only had this surface book since Sep. 2021. I take great and cautious care of it since it was so expensive.. just the other day I was using it and left the home office to work on other things. I left the lid up. ( Microsoft can't say it was a foreign object contacting the screen as it is closed as they claim how others are ending up with cracked glass) that is a total cop out.. I left the lid open all day. at the end of the night I shut down the lights and noticed the screen was still up. usually I close it. but this time I left it open. no harm. next morning, yesterday Dec 24th I was about to wake up the surface book and noticed a hairline on the dark screen going from the red light at the top center of the screen down to the about an inch then back up to the top right corner.. I thought it was maybe a spider web or something so I used hand held Swiffer duster and lightly wiped the screen.. not a web. turns out the screen cracked over night for no reason at all.. the surface is under warranty, but would be believe Microsoft warranty says I have to pay for the repair.. so after almost 4000 to buy this thing, they expect me to pay almost 700 to fix what appears to be a defect on there end.. also. I have spent hours trying to find a contact for Microsoft direct and there website will just push you around with zero option other than annoying redirects to worthless links.. Microsoft will likely just remove my post so the people won't know about my experience, but there are many other surface book posts that I can respond to.. I know there are many others with this same issue..

Dont buy this, the battery is a nightmare and cannot be replaced. the interiors are really complex and the smallest of things cannot be fixed on this model. AVOID

I’m hoping the Intel Tiger Lake H Series is real and Microsoft on the next Surface Book 4, use it to finally give us 8 CPU Cores and Thunderbolt 4.

Its one very impressive 'convertible' laptop... But that price is way too DEAR to swallow. I could load up MacBook Pro 16" and come out to cheaper than it. No go.

Surface product is shit! Bought pro 4 for 2500 dollars, one year later decided to switch shity battery for a new one. Yes, that was third party service provider, but my pro 4 never turned on again. And i learned thrugh internet that programed aging is wired in surface products.

Why did Microsoft market this as a tablet when they don't make any accessories for when you use it in table mode?!?! I'm still using the first gen Book and I have yet to find a magnetic screen cover similar to the original Surface product line.

XPS 15, HP Spectre 15 are way cheaper and more powerful , the design limits the cpu a lot , if you can't make use of a powerful tablet, then would be ridiculous to buy such an overpriced product

super awesome and unbiased review. loved it. great calling BS on MS on Tb3! somebody had to right! For the SB3, i think its target market just keeps shrinking with each generation. I had the SB1 but have long moved over to MBP+iPad for work and design/notes

Microsoft will probably just do another internal upgrade only in 2023, their engineers have a lot of time on their hands . Just look at their surface products over the last 5 years, for the most part they are the same, and no user memory upgrades on any, or ssd upgrades on any but a few, and no tb3 on any, and false excuses why. still a great machine but disappointing.

A lot of people are complaining about the bezels, but as a detachable tablet, the bezels are important to hold the device without activating the touchscreen. In this respect it should really be compared to the ipad pro.
