Spot on Lisa, seems like you are enjoying the Duo :). I believe that it would be very useful to do a comparison by opening side by side, pairs of apps that rely on heavy content and content that you want to see all at once because the details matter, like Outlook and Excel, etc. (instead of Gallery, KZbin, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger etc. where you don't care too much if the text is wrapped, the images/videos too small etc.) and show how much of the content you can actually read and use/interact with, in each device. Also it should show the steps to have the two apps open, stick them to each side and start using them. When comparing productivity gains for each device it is important to measure the actual usability, instead of just advertising that it supports multitasking. Because of the different screen aspect, I believe that Duo would win hands down.

I decided to cancel my Fold 2 and bought the Duo and got it yesterday. So far I’m really enjoying it. The camera isn’t as bad as I expected. Id say it’s perfectly fine for normal use, and that’s even in comparison to other devices I use Luke the iPhone 11 Pro Max, Pixel 2, Z Flip, P30 Pro, etc. The software on the duo is a bit quirky but I’ve have not had any major issues with it Luke I’ve heard about in a lot of reviews. Thanks Lisa. Your reviews are calm, well-thought-through, and informative. Best solo and comparative reviews of the Surface Duo on the Internet. My thoughts for the Surface Duo v.2: 1. 12GB RAM. Period. 2. A capable camera; even if they can't include multiple cameras the single one must give good pictures, including in low-light! 3. Shrink the top and bottom bezels significantly. 4. 3.5mm-to-USB C cable in the box.
@ContinuumGaming4 жыл бұрын
My thoughts about your thoughts: 1. Would be nice, but I think 8 GB would be already fine enough. 6 is a little on the low side, BUT I am not sure if it is not even enough for now... nobody showed me that is is not enough. Everybody just says it on base of what they are used too in there mind. 2. The camera has a simple problem: Thinkness. If you want a better camera, it needs more space (optics are optics) and that is troublesome for that form factor. 3. Agreed... but it really is a very minor thing for me... 4. That is just 8.99 dollars on amazon... not really a deal breaker.

I think the Duo to do actual work, like if you are on the road and have to check and get things done while on a plane or train, so I can see some corporations purchase a few of these and giving it to some of their employees who have to travel quite a bit. In this scenario, the poor camera would make this a non-issue, unless your work involves photography but if that's the case, I would assume you would have a dedicated camera (or a separate smartphone) for that. The Z Fold seems like it's more for media consumption.

The Duo is form over function, it is thin and light because they did not fit many features within. So it comes down to if you want a basic low-spec folding tablet or a high-spec proper phone come tablet substitute? If the price was right that may be a compromise you could make, but at $1400 plus taxes the Duo is a tough buy.

I have a Note 9 and was actually going to skip another generation, but I have enough airmiles to redeem the Fold2, so I'm giving it a go. Otherwise what else could you do with airmiles these days? I really wanted to like the Duo ever since the tease last year (or more precisely, ever since the Courier) but as a a lack of any notification screen on the outside (I don't always wear a smartwatch) and the crappy cameras sort of precludes any serious interest. Plus as Lisa says, I'm not in the multitasking camp.

It's no contest, the Z Fold 2 is the clear winner. Duo screens aren't flexible, it isn't wirelessly chargeable, it's often poorly responsive (try taking a photo, watch it take the picture two seconds after you tap the button), and it doesn't even support 5G. The interesting thing is where I live the Fold 2 can be bought at a lower price than the Duo. I actually think the first generation fold is a better comparison with the Duo. People who are buying this product will probably buy both, they are niche devices for rich people. Really they are two different products trying to achieve two different things. You would get the device that serves your purposes of use best. Some people would like a foldable device that can turn into a tablet. While others may find having two screens for multitasking a better option. Horses for courses.

Both devices are unique visions on a specific answer in search of a problem. Fusing phone and tablet into one. I have the DUO, I see a ton of "Fold is the win" here in the comments that fundamentally don't get the DUO. MS needs to do more to market this, or show it off. If your primary desire is for media consumption/games - then the FOLD is better (albeit huge looking). If you want a great two-app screen, DUO is a game-changer...it is not primed for fullscreen video watching. I don't get why this is hard for people to understand. That said, I've plugged my DUO into a monitor and using a mouse and keyboard it is actually an excellent "desktop" like way to interact with the phone and the gap is actually gone on an external monitor.

I want to get a Duo, but not this model. In a few iterations, with more RAM, better camera, software bugs worked out, and a slimmer bezel....I'm game.

Well done again, Lisa. I like your sense of balance -- praise without gushing; criticism without hate. I would say the Fold 2 is near perfect, but would become completely perfect, once they can add "Note" capability to it with addition of S pen.

It's interesting how many people don't understand how "freeing" two screens are. thathave an ordinary single screen phone and regularly use an old phone as a separate content device whilst using that phone. That's not for work it's purely for life use and content consumption. I regularly watch videos on one and reply to messages, search the web check news, etc on the other one. Duo is the first mobile device that fits my use case, I hope it arrives in the UK soon. Hmm, I've just realised I can it with my existing phone, three screen happiness, wooh huh. Brian

Since seeing the Duo's capability, I realise its potential each day. for eg was discussing something with a friend and needed to search something and share it. On the phone had to get out of the chat app, search, copy the link, come back into the chat app and paste. after a while I got tired and opened my desktop to continue. Would be so easier on the Duo.

Lisa, doesn't the Duo lack NFC?
@cameronbosch12134 жыл бұрын
I use Samsung Pay all the time on my phone; lacking this tap-to-Google Pay on the Duo would be a deal breaker for me.

rrobertt13 Why should I buy ANOTHER device just so I can use a feature that pretty much *every other* device in its price range has it?

Duo for me. It really represent productivity aside from the apps and software that needs optimisation. Hopefully they'll improve with ram management in the 2nd generation. Who know better about productivity than Microsoft?

Duo is wack. Buggy software.
@marschlionoalexander84984 жыл бұрын
@@LinuxAndroid86 wack is very subjective. Software can be improved over time, unlike the hardware problems the first fold had. They had to reinvented the whole folding hinge, with the 2nd generation fold. I cannot wait to see what the 2nd or 3rd gen duo will bring.
@LinuxAndroid864 жыл бұрын
@@marschlionoalexander8498 dont keep your hopes too high. Microsoft windows phones failed with no app support. What makes you think Microsoft will improve the software on the duo!! The specs are 2019 old. No NFC, no stereo speakers, no cover screen and Crappy camera. I don't see the duo having succee and selling millions of it.
@LinuxAndroid864 жыл бұрын
@@marschlionoalexander8498 Samsung fixed the Fold. And now it's good. Samsung knows what is doing. Microsoft is experimenting with the duo

For the spec to price ratio the duo is just not there yet. Next gen maybe.

Great review/comparison. I would say the Fold is a pretty good multi-tasking device as well

5:18... Duo is better for multitasking because Z Fold 2 is too Narrow and not all apps work with Split Screen Mode.

I just bought the Microsoft Surface Duo and it's honestly the best phone I've ever had... Besides the camera.

Nice comparison, always a great review from you.. I grabbed the Duo but I can't with that potato cam so sold it to a friend for what I bought it for and have the Fold 2 coming in tomorrow to replace my Fold 1.

The funny part about your decision is if you're just posting stuff to social media the better camera is not even going to matter because you can have a 9000 megapixel camera it will still look like a eight megapixel camera on Instagram LOL
@johnsecret13184 жыл бұрын
@@mxbblife_mu then it'll get worse on the duo ... lmao
@mxbblife_mu4 жыл бұрын
@@johnsecret1318 More like the same... Instagram and Facebook want a Uniform resolution...Duo is already closer to that resolution... Posting a picture from a better camera phone it's just bringing the quality down to the Duo's level.
