The older version of Word never had this issue because you could always
change the line spacing from line spacing options. The newer version of Microsoft Word changed all that. The default setting is now always double spaced or some kind of spacing and you can't get single line spacing back from the line spacing options even when you select 1.0 single line space. You have to go to "Design" and then "Paragraph Space" and from there you can change it to "No Paragraph Space" and you'll see it goes back to single line spacing! That's it! Easy and quick solution!

I have no "Design" option and can't find anything else that gives me a Paragraph Spacing option except that little drop down option to remove space after paragraph. Is this tutorial for a more current version of Word than 10?

I have Word 2007 and recently updated it to make sure I had to most recent update, I do not have a Design tab. How do I find that? This has been so frustrating for me to have single spacing on my documents. Thank you. I appreciate a prompt reply

Try the fourth tab from the left, between the Insert and the Layout tabs. If you dont see it, go to File>Options>Customize Ribbon and check the box to the left of Design.

100% agree. It seems like they just want to change things for the sake of keeping us confused. Why not just leave it the same if it works! Next year they'll probably change the whole format again and make us have to spend hours re-learning their new layouts. I seriously think it's a conspiracy with other global corps doing the same thing ie Facebook. They change everything all the time so we have to spend hours re-learning how to do the most basic tasks.
