I saw this Microwave Essential Oil Extraction Kit in a farm tips magazine and asked to review it. I love the concept, and it worked pretty good for me.
Now I had some trouble actually separating the oil from the water, but that was more my lack of lab technique than the kit.
Many people have commented on the video about how deadly microwaves are to the essential oil spirits and somesuch.
I get that many people are paranoid about things they don’t understand, but as a former radiological safety trainer and one that read the science behind this process I can asure you that a microwave oven actually works better for steam distilation of essential oils than traditional methods.
This equipment was actually designed by a researcher that needed a system to distill pure oil without heat damage.
The Microwave Essential Oil Extraction Kit gets the oil from the plant material without as much heat so it makes a better quality of oil.
Now the other comments were about the cost of the kit compared to what is in it.
I think that the price could come down based upon the costs of the equipment, but I also believe the inventor has the right to recoup his development costs.

microwave does not alter or change things. oils are non polar and it wont be affected by the microwave. Only polar molecules are affected. the reason why it heated up because of water content in the oranges and the water at the center of the cup vibrating or rotating caused by the microwave. once it heated, the steam drives the essential oil up to condense it on the center. Cool method!! ill try this with a specific design. thanks for sharing.

Love your vid, really love the little one giving their two cents. Got to love the wee ones. ~.^ This kit is a idea for some but the cost is outrageous. I've been making my own medicinal salves, lotions and oils from herbs and plants for years. My cost for a homemade distillery? A few dollars. People need to use the grey matter between their ears and take the time to find what they need at lower costs. Second hand stores, DAV's, Salvation Army stores, Dollar stores...etc. Now I'm not touting that you've acquired the kit and hey, and it worked great for you! But in reality, the contents are not worth $150. No where near it. Maybe $10 at max. So unless people out there just want a "right now!" fix, and have $150 to blow - then by all means..buy this. The rest of us common sense people with enjoy saving our money for bigger and better things!

TFS!! I have one of these that i bought from an estate sale, but it look a little different. but has all the same parts and attachments. anyways, i just barely decided to give it a try to see how it does. i have a larger still that i use for my Hydrosols but have had not much luck with it for oils. tho i haven't really tried but once and could not figure out how to separate the oil correctly without water ending up in it still. anyways, i tried using this with roses and i dont see any oil sitting at the top. i used a very good amount of roses, broke them up a bit and whatnot. when i rub the Hydrosol between my fingers, it feels super silky, more so than Hydrosols bought. so i know theres oils in there. is there another method to use to get them to separate better?

Interesting idea and good narration. Thank you for your post. However: A: Orange peel essential oil is heat sensitive, so cold methods are recommended, such as cold press + centrifuging, super-critical CO2 are recommended. B: Video quality is poor and many time out of focus;; C: Never ever handle essential oil with any plastic instrument. I always use glass syringe and store in a container with glass stopper. Generally, essential oils are not compatible with plastics, PVC etc and some EOs react very aggressively!

@annier6171
@annier6171 9 жыл бұрын
Denise Brown the absolute best place to get spike lavender from is your garden, grow it. If you don't have a garden grow in pots, get some seeds from the garden center (or online) - you can use pretty much anything for a pot as long as it has drainage, if you have a way to contain the drainage then grow them indoors! They are really pretty plants would look nice as pot plants and make your house smell divine. 2 plants would provide enough flowers for this gadget, and the more you cut the flowers the more flowers you get. Grow mint, spearmint, anything you can think of.

@zamclachia
@zamclachia 7 жыл бұрын
As an analytical chemist I would proceed as follows: In order to speed the seperation/ improve the quality of the seperation, add some table salt to the hydrosol. Shake it well to disolve the salt and let stand. You will see that the oil seperates far better.
@kathaap
@kathaap 7 жыл бұрын
how much salt?
@zamclachia
@zamclachia 7 жыл бұрын
The layer between the oil and the water is an emulsion i.e. Oil water mixture. It will separate over time. To speed this up, we change the properties of the water by dissolving salt in it. This helps 'break' the emulsion. Quantity is not that important. try adding 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt to begin with. Shake to dissolve the salt in the water and let stand. You should see the emulsion separate far quicker. An alternative is to freeze the extract over night. The water will freeze and the oil would remain as a liquid. Hope this helps.

David Nash true but that is not a lot of people, orange essential oil like all the citrus essential oils are super super super cheap. In the factories they don't do it like this. They just press the orange and citrus rinds. This thing is basically a toy, you wouldn't get much essential oil out of much anything else. Citrus rinds have a tonn of essential oil in them that is why orange was used in the video. Buying it you'd know you weren't getting microwaved essential oil lol. plus since it's pressed it is basically the highest quality you can get from essential oil aside from CO2 extracted. Unless you have tonns of free oranges and peels from them and just want to toss them in this thing and get some essential oil for using as cleaner lol. But still I don't think it's worth the effort. You can buy a ounce for 4-10 dollars usd.

I would not buy this! Most of the components can be acquired from a thrift shop for a couple of bucks. That "separator flask" isn't! It's a volumetric flask which is used in analytical chemistry. You could use any kind of flask to do the same thing. The best choice would be a separatory funnel...check Ebay

Clyde Wary I couldn't agree with you more! Everything shown in this so called kit is NOT worth $150 unless people have more money then brains. Or maybe a bit lazy. All of the items can be found easily (or slight variations that would still work) and much, MUCH cheaper. Steam distilling is easy, and doesn't take "special" items. But if you're the type of person who has an extra $150 just to throw out there - contact me. I'll take your donation! LOL

This kit is way overpriced. You can buy all of the equipment for a fraction of that price. Just get an old coffee pot, a 250ml beaker, volumetric flask/funnel separator, pipette and you're good to go. They put the "shields" in there to "reduce yield variance", so those really aren't necessary IMO. All they are selling you is the process, which is actually brilliant and why youtube videos are awesome, because once you know the process you can get your own equipment and do it for 90% less $$$.

It's a Faraday cage. It's the reason why you can look into a microwave oven while it's operating and not get fried. Yes, it's made of metal, but insulated. Fun fact: the holes in the screen are just a hair smaller than the microwave wavelength so the microwaves aren't able to escape, while visible light wavelengths can pass through no problem. Think of it like trying to drain the water in your noodles through a clogged coffee filter vs an unclogged spaghetti strainer.

I would have to know how the oil comes out after a microwave - enough heat will kill off anything in the oil that would be helpful to you i would think, not to think about the plastic being in the heat with your oils. I would have to do a lot of research before i would think this is or sounds like a good idea. I would like to have it tested and see if the composites are still the same inside the oil. Normally the applied heat is limited to the boilingpoint of your solvent[water in this case] but seeing the orange peels getting directly into contact with the glass I can assume there will be hotspots reaching a temperature way above 100C by which the different terpenes could possible decompose. I'd prefer the normal steam destillation or cold pressing/extraction method.

A cheap microwave can degrade food and stuff due to the inconsistancy of the microwaves. but a profesional one around £300.00 in the uk is fine its used by professionl cooks and those guys are like the gestapo when it comes to flavour and flavour is the most delecate thing, the biggest problem is the word radiation but its not nuclear the heat that come from a radiator is radiation. microwaves use magnetic radiation in other words if you realy do think that microwaves are harmfull you should discard all the electical equipment in your home, your moble phone, wi fi, tv, computer etc. as an example some people use a microwave in canabis extraction and there is nothing more volitile and prone to degredation than that. but at the end of the day its your choice use a microwave or dont use one. the only reason i am takeing the trouble to say this is 4 yaers ago all of my friends ditched there microwaves after a post on facebook. 4 yaers later and they all baught a new one.

Essential oils have specific actions, the present the essence of a plant. After having produced them in a microwave you can be sure that none of these beneficial actions will be present anymore in your essential oil. Lower I see that people argue that even heating breast or baby milk does not do any harm. That is horrible, microwave destroys also anything beneficial in baby milk.

I seen water microwaved and feed to plants next to tap water. The microwave water killed the plant.

Worst way of doing it. Microwave is not good, ruins it. Makes it inferior.

Oil is pronounced "oi-yel". Not "ole". O'er yonder is an ole schoolhouse. Go on o'er der to getcha sum edumacate'n. Other than that, using a microwave to extract essential oil is pretty dumb.

This is the third You Tube vid I've seen to day where the person allows a little kid to roam around in the background making all sorts of little chirps, farts, sneezes - I'm sick of it. In other words - WTF?

I care more about my son than your opinion. Making videos is part of my family life and he takes a part of it. If you don't like it then you can watch other peoples videos instead of mine as this will not change.
