Exactly why banning semi auto and full auto have little effect imo. Sante Fe shooting used a Smith and Wesson 38 special and a regular Remington 870. Both are only 5 rounds max and are not semi auto or full auto yet 10 people died. Average death toll with semi auto weaponry is typically higher i agree (e.g. Stoneman Douglas had 17 dead), but is banning and confiscating all those weapons worth it just for like 7 lives? FBI failed miserably when they did not restrict Nicholas Cruz despite people reporting him for violent tendencies over 45 times. Guns are not the main problem, they are a secondary problem relative the enormous problem of lack of actually enforcing laws already in place.

@@xbillups8322 The biggest issue isn't enforcing laws, it's that people can have no history of violence, and then 1 day decide to kill themselves, and take as many with them in the process, you can't legislate that, they don't need a gun, they don't even need a weapon, just go into a crowded space sticking fingers into people's eyes, no amount of laws, and enforcement will stop that, unless we start chipping people, reading their minds, and self destructing them before they start their spree.

Yes It was the Standard issue -12G Mossberg for Marine Corps Rifle Companies, and other Mission requirements, I personally owned the 500 A Defender, it fired flawlessly but it was a Rattle Trap, very nosey weapon if your trying to be incognito the 870 Rem. is my preferred. Rah!

The 500 was my 2nd gun and 1st long gun purchase after getting a pistol. I replaced the slide action with a Forend Surefire light. The nut was not tightly attached or some other problem, so the action slide assembly tube was ejected after firing slugs. I tried lock tight and welding but it again came undone at a training session. Mossberg simply replaced the entire action slide assembly after examining the damaged part I sent them. There was no cost for it. The 500 later would become my primary defense tool when about one minute after speaking to a sheriff on the phone, 3 guys ran up my driveway and one of them was about to break into my home through the back door. I had to take action quickly because my partially disabled mother's health and safety was on the line. I'll never forget that moment as I chose my Mossberg out of all the other guns I had, including an AR and AK-74/47. I wear a Mossberg T-shirt regularly as a thankful gesture to Mossberg.

I'm really a fan of the 590a1 series, as they have some nice upgrades for a rather small amount of money over a standard 500. Especially the 18.5" barreled 590a1. Great do all little shotgun that will last lifetimes.

***** I didn't care for the 20" just because of the balance. A little shorter package with a lot better balance works better for my stature. But a 590a1 for $200 is awesome. The only regret I have is that I got the ghost ring model when I wanted a standard bead, the sights are nice though.

I have been shooting a Model 500 since 1962 when I was 9 yrs. old. It has only had to have one repair and that was a new set of extractors. I guess I wore the original set completely out in that old 16 gauge shotgun. It is however probably the fastest shotgun I have ever handled and it just got slicker and faster with age and use. I have since gone to an auto-loader Remington 1100 12 gauge for about the last 20 years but I still love that old shotgun. I am not nearly as fast as I use to be with it and since I have aged I find the auto-loader is much easier on my old bones/ Once a shotgun man always a shotgun man.

Mossberg 500 combo for $400 is the best deal for a self defense/survival gun I have seen. Smooth bore and rifled barrel. Rounds for any situation(non lethal, flare/incendiary, birdshot, buckshot, slugs, rifled slugs). Good for worst case scenarios: wolves, bears, attack dogs, mountain lions, armed men.

Love the 500 I've put one through hell for many years. If you cant afford a 500 with all the goodies you could buy a mossberg maverick 88 security. most parts interchange between the 500 and mav 88. buy a field barrel, flex stock system/forearm, 500 action slide tube, and you'll have every possible configuration for near the same price as a base 500 with only a minor hit to quality (mainly the finish and some rough milling on components). After a little bit of work the 88 runs just as good as any 500 out there.

For the first time. I believe I could beat you with my pump shotgun. I run a police model 37 Ithaca. I recently went up against the Remington 1187. 5 shots as fast as possible. I beat that gun by a full shell. By that I mean I had five out in his 5th was going in. I think this would be the only time I might be able to give you at least a run for your money. Me and my brother bought 20 ga. 500's in 68. Two days before deer season we were dry firing & my brothers firing pin exited the barrel. Two or three click later mine did the same thing. Dad took both to a gunsmith and he made firing pins for both. No deer! Both our mossy's developed another problem at the same time. They would drop a loaded shell from the mag. I figured out what was wrong with mine and fixed it. They are good guns, especially for the money.

***** That's why you practice with the gun you use in competition - you notice in his pistol videos, that the revolver, etc. he uses is his competition gun so that muscle memory and all is like replaying a tape - hopefully the same every time. His 'zombie' is one he doesn't use now so some of the memory is gone from everyday practice. This is why he emphasizes that you practice with what you intend to shoot, esp. concealed carry.

Wow Jerry, that is a really really excellent video and your presentation style is so completely authentic. So enjoyable! Lots of Mossberg facts. We did a lot of research too in making our Mossberg 500 DIY mod & build video and your facts on 1961 as the start year of production and longevity of production, experience, all matches up exactly with what we found as well. We may have gone too deep in our video on the history though because we found out so much good Mossberg history we wanted to share it, going all the way back to O.F. Mossberg of Sweden and their first gun, the four shot 22LR. As the Mossey we bought was the most basic 500 version, we had to go with aftermarket Black Hawk Spec Ops Knoxx Gen II recoil reducing stock and threw on a Warhammer full length rail to also help with the heat. Our stock did not come off anywhere as quickly as the new Mossberg system you showed here and our forgery was not removable at all (at least we could not figure out how to get it off because there was no retaining nut. Again, totally enjoyed your video and amazing shooting and presentation. Thank you for a great video, Jerry! BTW, I like the JM Semi Auto you showed at the end. It has a more beefy look. I might get that next!!!

if that shotgun were to be fired indoors inside a very small room without ear muffs on... is the sound so loud that it could damage the shooters ears. .Having this gun for home protection, most likely would not either have time for ear protection or may inhinder a sense of sound needed by the protector..so it most likely would be fired with no sound protection.. can you answer this question .

Well a couple things should be said here if you shoot it once you won't go deaf just hard hearing for a couple minutes then you will be almost back to normal but if you shoot it probably three or more times you might not hear a whole lot for ten minutes or more my suggestion would be if you think there are multiple problems don't shoot till you have to but if it's just one put one round where needed then you should be good and have scared everything away from the area just have someone call the police if the people across the street haven't already

+FIORELLOINVENTIONS In a home defense situation your adrenaline will be kicked in before you pull the trigger, likely blocking the damage of the gun shot to your eardrums. Also your average handgun caliber is a bit louder than a shotgun believe it or not. 9mm generates more decibels than a 12 gauge last I saw.

it would definitely do permanent damage. Not instant deafness, but some damage that never heals. And the damage accumulates. Might be a good trade-off, though. There are electronic ear protectors that pipe a microphone through but cut off loud noises. You can turn it up and actually have better hearing with than without. But as you say, you'd need time to put them on. these days most gun people lean towards an AR-15 for home defense over a shotgun. You can shoot it faster for longer, reload quicker, and it has less over-penetration. The small bullets tend to fragment and tumble, dumping velocity quickly where the thicker pellets just keep on trucking through drywall. Also - shotguns are not drop safe. You can slam fire one where a pistol or rifle will not fire. So don't leave one in the chamber. An AR will also do significant hearing damage, especially in a confined space. A suppressor is your friend here. Pistols are also loud. A .357 will be louder than a shotgun.

It's why my car gun is actually pepper spray. If that doesn't dissuade a potential carjacker w/o blowing out my ears or those of my passengers, I can always bail out & use my handgun, which is always carried in a (CENSORED) position.

back in the early 90s I added a 500 to my kit for IPSD shoots. It was pretty fast and it was REALLY cheap for a starter gun. At the time my bird gun was a Winchester with the rotary bolt. With pheasant loads if you just kept a relaxed left arm, the spent casing would eject itself. I cooked up some hot "sporting clay loads" and they did the same thing. SO, I took it to a n IPSC shoot. Our typical course was 5 plates spread about 20 yards laterally at varying distances between 10 and 30 yards. I had been shooting high 190s with the mosberg, The WInchester took a half second off my time just because I had no work to do to eject the spent shell. Just shoot, and push the forearm forward and cycle my trigger finger forward during that time. No :click clack bang just clack-bang SO I took that thing apart and polished all the moving parts to a mirror finish and coated with Brownell's two part graphite product...dang. You could hold the gun vertically and hit the release and just gravity on the foream assembly would eject the empty. I alos found that a relaxed left hand seemed faster when swinging to a new targert

The Remington 870 wingmaster series are better. The 870 express are equal to the 500. The wingmasters cost a lot more though.

Unless it's 20 years old, I wouldn't buy anything with Remington written on it... They have been going to shit for at least that long, and pretty much went straight down the crapper in 2007, when they were purchased by Cerberus... They haven't gotten any better... Now they're in bankruptcy.

+unitedgray Not much difference between the two except weight. However one of the more ntoted differences is how on the 500 is you smash the trigger guard the entire assembly is likely to break and fall out since its plastic. 590a1 is some type of metal

RanndomUndead I'm well aware of the differences. I want a 500 so I can easily swap between a 28" barrel and an 18.5" barrel. The same cannot be said for the 590A1.

unitedgray Oh yea no kidding there. Theres even the convenience of directly obtaining the field/deer combos for just that purpose. Believe theres a 24" inch thats pretty popular too for those who dont like switching but want multi purpose. Ive been debating on grabbing me a 500 for awhile now

I love my mossberg 500 flex it's such an awesome gun, I have the camo/od green version, I won it from ducks unlimited so it has the duck unlimited logo. It came with a 22" and 28" barrel and very nice mossberg carry case with alot of accessories, I love it.
