Mid Ohio Draft Horse Sale, Spring 23’

I spent the week at the spring sale, and rather than show you the sale ring, I decided to show you behind the ring in the stalls as well as everything else that goes on during this week. So much more than just the horses. There was every breed of horse and about 1775 total! Incredible operation they run during the Monday thru Friday sale.

Thank you I appreciate it. They do sell mules there but not a huge draw. Definitely have all of the horse drawn equipment. I have 3 drafts and 1 mule currently. Colombia TN has Mule Days in April and they have a ton of teams. It is something to go see for sure. Thx for watching! Dave

Thank you Bobby I appreciate it! You would definitely enjoy it, I’ll be back in March. Just know that the area is addicting and you will find yourself there a couple times a year. Lovely video, seems so sad for these magestic lovely horses. I would love to give a couple of these a home. Some tremendous looking Flemish horses (What the Americans call Belgian draught) they have some of the most gorgeous heads and lines of any horse, the type I love. Pity so many of the working horses have their tails hacked off or even docked (didnt know the latter was even legal in this day and age). I hope they all found their forever homes and didn't catch anything nasty in this environment which to be honest isn't ideal.

They all went on to new homes and I'll agree with you that the Belgians are beautiful. I have black Percherons but would love a big team of the Belgians. The tail issue is certainly a touchy subject, I don't like it but it still happens. They are arguments for both ways but we know what we like, and thats the long tails. From what I could see of the two Belgians behind you in the beginning of the video, I like them a lot. When the far horse looks up at the camera you can see the striking head on that beauty, the long lined neck and fine ears. @@bdradley1

My only concern is weather they would be sent to slaughter the majority are in very good condition but they have hay which is very rare but they can’t turn round a few have their equipment still on it’s nice that their are rugs for the horses to wear but my concern is the slaughter pipeline still they have no space to turn around and some have no hay where is the water I have a feeling that the short tails these beautiful horses have the Amish cut them like it which is a shame do you Dave no what happened to them and weather they were sent to the bad place

The majority of these horses are to replace stock that was sold off last fall or go on the show circuit. They have their gear on because they are getting ready to be hitched to a wagon to demonstrate their capabilities. If you go show, the rules are it has to have a docked tail (don't know why, maybe tradition). So the Amish just dock the tails at birth. They don't all have hay because if they had unlimited access, then they could colic in owners absence. They were fed regularly. This is not a Horse Plus Humane Society auction and not all auctions are bad.

Yes Cheri it’s at Mt Hope. They have sales monthly but the biggest sales are March and October, titled “Mid Ohio Draft Horse Sale”. Anyone can attend, no cost, runs entire week Monday thru Friday. They will have about 1100+ horses over the entire week. You can ride or drive the horses in the outdoor area if interested in buying or just walk the aisles admiring them. Everyone there is very very accommodating, unlike an English (you and I) event where everyone is stuck up and thinks you just want to steal something from them! It’s very interesting, and there is not a single cop anywhere to be seen, a testament to the Amish community. I did a Fall 22’ sale video that focuses mostly on horses. I’m headed up Monday to pick up a new Black Percheron Mare from an Amish man I befriended there. I will also be there for the October sale as prices tend to be lower headed into winter.
