Omg, When Women Were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill is my fav this year! A book in which women can spontaneously turn into dragons and devour the person who pissed them off. So freakin good! The audiobook is also excellent. Ugh so beautifully written.

I don’t have a book to recommend today…just nothing jumping to mind, but I do want to recommend the show “The Wilds”. If I remember correctly, it’s on Prime. I have only watched season 1, but found it randomly and ended up binging it because it was so intriguing. I really need to find time to check out the second season. I don’t really know how to describe it, but I believe it somewhat fits in your vibe you were talking about because the girl who is the main character and all the girls who are supporting (main) characters are all definitely “messy”. 😂 It’s so good! 🍌

I would recommend Temple Alley Summer to read in summer! It’s a translated middle grade about love and friendship with a story within a story (think fairytale) and it’s so beautiful and heartwarming! Was one of my top reads of 2023!!

Lexi, I have a book recommendation for you! Inheritance by Nora Roberts The Lost Bride Trilogy Book One. It has historical, paranormal, romance, Gothic, and so many other vibes! There is also a manor/mansion on the coast of Maine, and it's haunted. I read it in 2 sittings. Would have been one sitting if my husband hadn't kept pestering me to go to bed last night. Lol. When I finished the book, my first thought was wow. The next was, Lexi needs to read this!

I HAVE to recommend you Skulduggery Pleasant as your October read! Read the first book and you won't be able to let this series go again. It's the book series I go back to whenever I want a good laugh or some really dark on-point sarcasm. Basically, the book is about a young girl who inherites a house after her strange uncle and discovers that said uncle was part of this community of magic practitioners, ghouls and goblins. A world where your real name can be used against you, you have to choose your style of magic, and there is a ghastly war brewing. Stephanie is the female protagonist. The MALE protagonist, oh boy, let me tell you. A suit dressed, fedora wearing, irresponsible, mostly caring, slightly forgetful, with the darkest and driest sense of dark sarcastic humor, SKELETON detective! You have to give this a chance! Please!

If you are looking for a new rec, especially if you are into that weird girl genre, I highly recommend “Pizza Girl” by Jean Kyoung Frazier. I personally didn’t like it myself lol but it definitely fits that category of books you mentioned! I also highly recommend “Natural Beauty” by Ling Ling Huang. It’s a literary fiction/horror. I personally loved this one!

I just noticed that the red part of the cover of Fruit of the Dead is a pill! One of my favourite TV shows has time-travel, it's a German show called Dark, the first season specifically is phenomenal, also the Korean movie The Call is a really good time travel thriller, not sure if it wouldn't be a bit scary for your tastes though. Other movies I feel you'll really love if you haven't seen them yet are Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and anything Ghibli (the most recent The Boy and the Heron was stunning, but my all-time favourite is Whisper of the Heart). I have my final exam in uni in a week and right after that I have to move, so stress has been a lot but some manga that's been keeping me happy is Play It Cool, Guys; My Love Mix-Up! and Kaiju No. 8 💗

My favorite book I have read so far this year (and my recommendation) is Everyone on This Train is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson. It is the sequel to Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone, which was also my favorite book last year. I bought the sequel right as it came out, but waited a while before reading it, because I was hoping it would live up to the first one. It did, and I think I maybe even liked it slightly better than the first one! Those books are funny and unique, and I do like the train setting on the second book. Can't help but being reminded a bit of Murder on the Orient Express. 🍌

🍌 One of my FAVORITE books I've read so far has been "I Cheerfully Refuse" by Leif Enger. It's a literary fiction with a dystopian setting and there is a bit of an Orpheus/Eurydice retelling vibes in there as well (blurbs call the MC an "Orphean narrator" so I believe it's intentional lol). A book that I think give huge Umbrella Academy vibes is the Silvers series by Daniel Price! First book is "The Flight of the SIlvers" and it centers around a group of people who survive the end of their world only to end up in some kind of alternate world to their own and they all get powers ✨

My favorite book I read this year was Icarus by K. Ancrum, its a modern day retelling of the love story of Icarus and Helios from Greek Mythology and it is SO good. The writing is incredibly poetic and you really just feel for the characters! I literally never see anyone talk about this book so I believe it to be an underrated read. If I were to recommend ONE book, it would def be this one. Lemme know if you check it out!!

I’m constantly recommending the show Dark on Netflix to people. It’s amazing! I find it so artistically beautiful. I’ve rewatched it several times. It’s a sci-fi show dealing with time travel. Some people don’t like it because its not originally in English but that doesn’t bother me. It’s a must watch!!!!
