In my system, instead of the 18X4 analog snake, added an S18 Stage box and routed it with AES50. Saves a munch of patch plugs. Recently picked up the M32C and love it. Only down side is the lack of 1/4 inch inputs, so you have to carry more DI. Down side of the stage box is it requires power. The upside is it carries the ultranet for the P16 personal mixers. Nice to plug that into the stage box instead of the console.. Really nice for bands that prefer a personal mixer for ears.

Hey Billy, do you have any videos about mixing in-ears? I've been trying to dial in my X32 rack for a couple of years, but can't seem to dial it in perfect for isolation without overwhelming background noise.
@billylaguardia2 жыл бұрын
I don’t specifically, but that’s a great idea for a video! The best advice I can give is to put as few things in the mix as possible. Start with your vocal mics as they will give you a good majority of ambience, and add things back in from there. There is a misconception about in ears in the sense that people think there will be a lot isolation. The mix will change with the room, different performers etc. Start with only vocals in their ears and build from there. Stage volume is also a huge factor. Drummers especially tend to play louder with both ears in. If a drummer is playing too loud, ask them to pull one ear out.

Why do you ring out on LR instead of a mic bus or similar?
@billylaguardia2 жыл бұрын
Personal preference. I start with the main mix buss and work backwards from there to the individual channel level. I think of the mix buss EQ as room correction with the matrix EQ as a global tone for the mix with respect to the room and the band.The channel EQ is there for mostly for problem solving.

May i ask why you don't use the Stereo-EQ as an insert on your mains? The matrix-trick seems nice, but a simple Stereo EQ should help you fixing your problems more precisely than channel/bus/matrix EQs, right?
@soundfreak88922 жыл бұрын
Cool setup, but a proper pa tune requires a rta mic and pink noise. And you can do it with this system. And I wouldn’t really eq the system based on where a microphone feed backs. I think it would be more efficient to make a vca group and put a true eq on it, and ring out the mic. But never eq your system based on the frequencies of where the microphone feedbacks. But to me it’s kind of noobish to do these things, you can fix feedback with basic channel eq and and a good overall mix. And tuning your room the right way like I mentioned earlier

Ringing out your PA just to make the mic not feed back is just notching out important frequencies and basically punishing the other instruments tone. Don't do that. Use the channel EQ to keep the mic from feeding back and if you need more frequencies, run it into a bus and use that EQ as well. Don't punish the sound of your whole mix just because of a single mic.

@jakenuno9900 Жыл бұрын
I find placing like mics together in a bus and EQing/rining there, to be best, for me. This prevents any degradation of other channels such as music playback, or guitars, for example. I'd do more of the tuning of the room on the matrix end. Leave the channel EQ available for coloring/subtractive EQ taylored to each vocal/instrument. This way you spread the load, doing a little fixing here, little color there, until you have a well polished mix. Great setup man, I love seeing peoples mobile racks and how they plan it out with their logic; very well planned.
@thesoundman114 ай бұрын
one way i learned to stop feed back if mics are going to be in front of the mains is to turn a small amount of delay on the mic channel, and i mean a small amount. most people never noticed and it worked quit well as the signal from the speakers never gets back to the mic at the same time to cause feedback. i just used the delay one the channel the mic is on.

Excellent tutorial , there are very few videos out there on the m32c + dl32 specifically , are the start files available as a paid download by any chance , or a more detailed focus on ringing out the monitors
@billylaguardia2 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne, I’m not sure if there are examples how files out in the world. However I believe you can download the M32 software for your computer to make a show file and load it onto a USB. As far as ringing out speakers, that just requires a bit of practice. My advice when you are starting is to use wide Q’s In the mid range. Start with the “nasal” frequencies centered at 1k with a -12db cut. The do the same cut around 8k. Those are both good places to start. Think about it like this: monitors are only for reference, not a super HiFi listening experience.

@billylaguardia7 ай бұрын
16 busses on the M32c. I run 12 auxes for ears with 4 FX banks. There are 8 "aux" input channels shown on the C, which is a little weird. Not sure what you would use these for on the C other than maybe "card" inputs. On the M32 control surfaces these are for the 1/4" jacks. On the control surface you could use them for your break music iPod or as hardware ins/outs as an example.
@robin_miller_music7 ай бұрын
@@billylaguardia ah, this is the difference between 16 aux 'busses' and 8 aux 'channels'. I had assumed (since that's how everyone lese describes it) that the channels were outputs, not inputs.

Hey Rick, the DL32 is just the stage box, it needs a "brain", which in my set up is the M32C. You can also use a M32R or M32 is you want a control surface with faders. I’d go with 2 - 12’s and a sub. That set up will be fine for most indoor spaces. You don’t really need a ton of PA as long as the band’s stage volume is low. The trick will be sub placement. A single sub should be placed in the center if applicable. If you aren’t on a stage you may need to make some game time decisions. You need to use your kick mic’s polar patter to your advantage or you will get feedback.

You never should mono your PA, it's suposed to be stereo....eq your mic channel if you need to, never main output
@billylaguardiaАй бұрын
Why can’t the PA be mono? Most live engineers mix in mono. The only things that are stereo in mixes are effects, keys, tracks and program music. These sources are hard right and hard left meaning that both speakers are being fed simultaneously with a similar source. If you pan a mono source (say a rack tom) to one side, the other side of the room won’t hear it. Also, why no EQ on the main output? If you are going to make a phase argument, how is main eq any different from channel eq?
