Ha man When you are paycheck to paycheck with debt up to eyeballs like most that's not middle class. I lived in my car in Tulsa making $70/yr at the time debt free, saving /investing 90% of my income and was more middle class than the actual majority of middle class at the time. Now I'm making $130k-$160k/yr. living in upper middle class area, high end condo in Tulsa and Marco Island, rental in Rome, place in Switzerland zero debt, and easily living on $1400/mo..etc. Drive a 5 year old Chevy and wear mostly jeans/sweat pants and tshirt. I'm the millionaire next door. (I'm also immune to divorce rape and weaponized child support) Only changes I see in this country are people living beyond means, too many kids, too big of home, keeping up with Joneses, spend money you don't have, new cars, credit card debt, buying junk and "stuff" among other things. It's not 1960. Can't poop out kids left and right, working one job,and wife staying home they way many live today. You don't adapt so you screw yourselves.

@JAchica11 I know this is from a year ago, but the answer to your question is, because the church in this case is the easier fight. The system that is deliberately creating this problem, to fill their pockets, has more heads and is a much more difficult fight. It's not right to pick the softer target, just human nature unfortunately.

No it can't happen to anybody. It happens to people who find employment then go and buy a new car. If you have been homeless for 2 years and find a job you don't buy a new car for a decade. You make sure you never end up in that situation ever again. Even if you lose a job you ensure you can live off the interest of your savings. If you make $40k you save $20k eating the same shit you are when you were homeless to make sure you never ever end up the same way.

I’ve been living out of my car off and on for the last 5 years unable to find a stable job and reasonable rent in my hometown Santa Barbara CA. Rent is $1300 for a studio apartment and I’m lucky if I make $1600 a month after taxes at my current full time job. Not to mention denials from credit checks. Never learned about credit in school. My heart goes out to the families.

I live here because it’s where I was born and raised and I love it here. Update. I worked my ass off as an apprentice for two years and continued living out of my car and showering at the gym until I earned enough and was finally approved for a studio apartment I can now afford. It was all the days and nights of prayers, Buddhist meditations, and positive affirmations, that kept me going through it all. I really encourage those struggling to heal and keep striving from within. Never stop believing in yourself. Each day on earth is a blessing filled with opportunities. Spread love. We are all one infinite consciousness having an individual experience. Each one teach one. Never give up. As Tupac Shakur once said. “After every dark night, there’s a bright day after that, so no matter how hard it seems, stick your chest out, keep your head up and handle it!” Peace and Love! 🙏📿 #NamMyohoRengeKyo

The cost of living has gone up but people's wages haven't!!! Rent is ridiculously high in some places such as California and people barley scrape enough to get by. People say "get an education to get a better paying job! " College tuition has gotten so expensive, people get into even more debt after they finish school. It's becoming almost impossible to escape poverty in America.

A clerk at my local gas station who is an immigrant from Mexico has 3 full time minimum wage jobs. The reason? So his family (wife and 3 kids) can live and go to school in a nice neighborhood. I use to take taxis all the time. The interesting thing is, they were all immigrants with College degrees. The problem? Their degrees weren't recognized in this Country. I find it interesting that the guy who found a job bought a Dodge Challeneger instead of something more practicable in case he had to move back in his car. Me? I decided at age 30 to get a job with a pension, so I left my Art Director's job and switched to Law Enforcement. While working, I took all the overtime I could get. My goal was to pay off my house before retirement, which I did. I retired with no debts and a house worth 300% more than what I paid. I drive a 22 year old truck and an 18 year old car so I don't get into debt. I save my tax refunds in case I have to buy a car, I can pay cash. My pension covers all our living expenses and my wife's Social Security goes into the Bank or investment accounts.

I would implore absolutely anyone who is in this situation of being Middle Class and losing your home, especially if you are a single woman: DO NOT GO TO THE HOMELESS SHELTERS!!! ESPECIALLY mixed sex shelters!! And by that, I mean anywhere that the homeless men can have access to you at anytime of the day, even if you sleep separately. This includes ESPECIALLY shelters with male staff, who in my own personal hellish experience, can use their authority to prey on the women who stay in these shelters. If you have a car, live in it. If you have a friend who can lend a couch, stay with them. A garage, a big shed...anything. There are men in these homeless shelters ,and other women, from all walks of life. Some are from gangs, some are fresh out of jail on murder charges, some are sex offenders...the list goes on and on. if you have teenagers, there will be no end to the access they have to drugs and people on them in a shelter. These people know gang members, corrupt police, members of community harassment groups...all and every sort of criminal. If you so much as look at some of these people the wrong way, it can mean your life. If you wouldnt stay in a prison for shelter, you dont want to stay in a homeless shelter for housing. The short-term solution is not worth the longer term and possibly even permanent risks. That's the general rule. I made the mistake ,as a single female, of staying in a homeless shelter in Miami when I moved there and couldnt find a job. My life was literally ruined because I attracted the attention of the wrong man there through NO fault of my own whatsoever. A place like that ,for more reasonable people, is meant to be a pitstop. But there are people that can decide they want it to be the beginning of your end and you will find that ,for such people, life is very cheap. Someone who has given up on themselves entirely and destroyed their own life is probably not going to give a second thought to destroying yours. That is not to say all. There are many fine, good, and lovely people who just made/make very poor choices. But there are those who want nothing more than to watch the world around them burn and they are happy to start with you because you have had something they may never have had and they may well view you as "privileged". Please...DO NOT DO IT TO YOURSELF. It literally ruined my life. I live literally on the other side of the planet now, and I still have problems with gang members (most specifically, biker gangs) and some of the generally disgruntled. Gangs are global now. You can be found and harmed or harassed anywhere.

"People like us" were people like you", sir. My neighborhood or state has no safe parking lot and we get things stolen from our yards and cars daily. I have watched drivers throw their trash out of the window as they drive past my soon not to be residence, my next door neighbor's yard looks like a jungle so please have some respect as you judge "us".......We SO NEED this on the east coast specifically NEW JERSEY. 55+ and preparing my suv to become my home. It is SO out of control and our government could care less. Homeless communities pay much less or no taxes (if not working), therefore our greedy and corrupt government have no use for us. Much better than getting a 20k car, putting 3k down, and have a $450 a month payment. If you don't have a job making 65k or above new vehicles are pretty much a waste. People have always had tough times. The difference today is family and friends are not stepping up to help as the used to. Sometimes there's a good reason for this, sometimes it's just an "every man for himself" mentality. There is also this modern tendency of people moving to distant parts of the country where they don't know anyone or have any support system. Yes, I would live to live near a beach or around palm trees, but I'll be damned if I'll be somewhere where I don't have a soul to turn to if things go south.

you know what a big problem is. people get into too much debt and buy things they do not need (over spending). im sure this is not the case for most on this short clip, but todays society focuses on fancy cars, biggest house with a pool, nice clothes etc. mortgages and rent is the killer, then theirs car loans which to me makes absolutely no sense, and it keeps going from there. life is expensive, but we as a society are buying into all this marketing crap. even just going to grab a coffee every morning before work adds up and takes away from your bottom line.

You're absolutely right about debt and materialism being huge problems. That can't be understated. But that's not necessarily a major cause of homelessness. The lack of family, friends and community support during tough times is what sends many people into homelessness, regardless of the reason for tough times (layoffs, disability, natural disaster, mental illness, drug addiction, etc). I've seen drug-addled repeat violent criminal offenders never become homeless because of family support. I was as responsible a professional and citizen as I knew how to be, but I had no support at all when a perfect storm of otherwise salvageable disasters all occurred at once. And so I now live in a car, which I don't like at all. It's been utterly devastating. View my video "What It's Like To Live In A Car" to see how safe I feel sleeping in parking lots.

Americans need to stop trying to become middle class and instead focus on trying to create additional income streams. That's the key to surviving the loss of a job. Purge your mind of dumb ideas like "middle class". Instead, do what you can to safeguard yourself by being sure that if you lose your 1 job, you would keep living as if you'd never lost the job. Focus on this when times are good. Don't wait until you are in fear of getting laid off or, after you're laid off.

If you won't do job for non living wage, 50 more immigrants in line that will! Many jobs now require (or preference given) to bilingual. Not just mass migration, technology has changed and/or eliminated many jobs too. My stepfather had middle class life with house, boat, vacations, etc.all on labor jobs. Now that same job pays 9hr.if lucky & few worker's speak English. Wal-Mart/Amazon mentality as consumers demanded "cheap" & supported big box vs.small biz. I refuse to support big box. Americans got what they asked for...cheap labor! Then bitch about it! Cant have it both ways.

This just doesn't happen in Europe. all of the countries of Europe are welfare states of some kind (they vary widely in scope and implementation, however). Even the poorest ones. Homelessness is not something that happens to perfectly normal Europeans with perfectly normal lives. If you “hit a rough patch,” and can’t afford to pay for your home, you’ll find yourself provided with financial assistance from the government. If need be, you will be provided with social housing, which exists in various forms in nearly all European countries. Again; being homeless means being dead. Well functioning societies don’t leave people to die in the streets. Oh, except USA.

For an outsider it seems to me that an American citizenship does not come with any benefits only liabilities such as taxes, that sounds like a raw deal, in my country we pay taxes but demand and get something in return from our government, things like free hectare, kindergarten, unemployment benefits and so on, and nobody needs to live in a van ore on the streets. A nation where people dont have the basic necessities is a failed state.

The only people who change a system are those who stopped believing in it. If you ever want to get ahead, you first need to pay cash for everything! Get rid of the plastic cards, the expensive homes and everything with a mortgage!
