To be fair, he was caught at Cirith Ungol after the Shelob encounter and was technically caught by Faramir, even though he wasn't holding them prisoner or anything. So he was actually caught three times. Two of them just happened to be by friends.

100% Sauron created the Lights in the Dead Marshes or even the marshes themselves. It is superb defensive terrain since Sauron has corrupted Dagorlad and the Brown Lands, it blocks the Black Gate from invaders coming from Mirkwood and Lothlorien. Plus Sauron had the option of allowing evil Elven spirits to become the Lights and bodies in the water much like how the Barrow-Wights kill people, just a different medium. Also, I think a really cool video topic would be about what ancient structures or places that are mentioned in the Silmarillion still exist but no one knows where they are? Kind of the opposite of what people thought about Khazad-Dum where the Dwarves know where it is still but can't take it back. Places that the Elves, Dwarves, Men, etc. know for certain still exist, but they don't know where they are anymore

Honorary Mention for Gundabad, although it's hard to tell exactly how dangerous it would have been at the tail end of the Third Age. Not-Serious Mention for Lothlorien, considering how often it or a certain inhabitant of it is called "perilous". Definitely-Serious Top-10 if you're an orc though! (Actually the orc-version of this list would be interesting.)

Something that I've always wondered about but especially after reading your comment: How would the Elves of Lothlorien react to a random person like me or you stumbling into one of their settlements on accident? Even if you're found on the way in, would the Elves be angry at you? If you needed food, rest, or medical aid, would they help you out? Haldir makes it seem like they're at least not trusting of anyone they catch, though that might be because of Sauron's rise and the Goblins in Moria stirring up after the Fellowship. I wonder how Galadriel would react to a random person accidentally finding their way into Lothlorien. Would she act like she did towards the Fellowship? Or would it be like the less-nice depiction of the Lady of the Golden Wood that we get from the Rohirrim?

@@ChrisVillagomez If you want my guess....Assuming they seemed innocent of evil intent, at the time of the War of the Ring or the years leading up to it, they'd be captured, intimidated if necessary, and turned loose over the border with clear warnings not to return. If in need of food or healing, they'd probably get it, but no more and no longer than necessary. This would be a standing policy, not something Galadriel would need to be involved in executing. It could be a friendlier greeting at other points in time.

As an older person I’m constantly amazed at how aspects of pop culture bleed into other areas. Like D&D having “wights” and “wraiths” and then the abilities of those creatures being retrofitted to Tolkien. On the other hand, I like how Tolkien is mostly vague about everything since I hate this current fad of fantasy authors explaining how everything works in their worlds.

Are there any sources that state Tol Fuin is a dangerous place or even that any of the giant spiders still reside there after The War of Wrath? I always imagined the spiders had been slain or driven away by the Host of the Valar and Tol Fuin is just a lonely, remote, and mostly cold island.

Always thought it was odd that in CS Lewis' The Silver Chair there are Ettinmoors..where giants lurk about and give the place a bad name. And I've always LIKED the way Tolkien made use of the known oddity of the flickering flames that appear over marshes and some types burial grounds in his Dead Marshes. Seemed to rather combine the two, rotting plant matter , rotting flesh matter; perhaps making those will of wisps extra willy. Or wispy. Take your pick.

In the 90's there was a fantastic card game which featured many of these locations. It was interesting how by setting your will and desire to accomplish something ostensibly good, you could find yourself passing by, or going to one of these places. Fun video, thanks!

I'm not a big fan of comparing people or places between ages, especially between the First and Third Age. It's also much easier to compare things at a specific date, because how dangerous a place is changes with time. That being said, if I were to include locations from the First Age, we'd have some top contenders; Angband, Nan Dungortheb, Dorthonion, Helcaraxe etc

Honestly I'd put Isengard higher, probably in third place instead of Moria. As Tolkien itself described it was something more than a stronghold of orcs and evil men, it was a small copy of Mordor itself, and the fact that Saruman resided there added a layer of supernatural danger on its own. As Aragorn noted, Saruman's influence extended through all the lands near Isengard, weakening the resolve of those who opposed him while strengthening the will of his servants. Saruman himself was also a TREMENDOUS threat, a sorcerer of great power who could bend people's will through his words and an expert of dark magic. It says something that Gandalf didn't even want to risk passing through Rohan with the Ring because that would take it too close to Isengard, but he willingly guided the Fellowship through Moria.

I would put Tol Fuin in the top 10. It was rumored that all the worst evils of Taur-nu-Fuin still reside there since the drowning of Beleriand. Canonically, very little is actually known of the place since even elves fear to go there.

please do 10 Conflicts (Wars) which "reshaped" Middle-Earth in some form, 1st Age - 3rd Age (so without years of the Trees) so on this list placement would find conflicts that erased countries from the map and heavily depopulated areas

Torech Ungol deserves a citation. Even a wounded Shelob gurgling and hissing in the dark would have unnerved the unwary. Once healed, an encounter within those reeking tunnels spun with webs would have been terrifying.

I have this idea or these ideas where you and a bunch of other youtubers who are massive fans of The Lord of the Rings should all come together with the entire cast and crew of Sir Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001-03), and when I mean the entire cast and crew I am not kidding or telling a joke, I'm actually being serious. The director, the directors of photography, the producers, the executive producers, the cinematographers, the film composer, the actors (including some of the actors behind the scenes such as Sir Christopher Lee, Sir Ian Holm and the other actors that are now dead, and this doesn't involve the famous actor Sir Ian McKellen), the script supervisors, the writers, the editors, the stunt supervisors, the food supervisors, the makeup artists, the production designers, the people who were involved with the songs In Dreams and May it Be, by Enya , Gollum's Song, by Emilíana Torrini, and Into the West, by Annie Lennox, the people who created the weapons, prosthetics, miniatures or the Big-atures (according to Jackson) and so much more. What I am wanting to happen with you, the other youtubers, and the cast and crew that was involved with Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy is for all of you to sit down in one of those stylish meeting rooms, and discuss all together why The Lord of the Rings is the Greatest Trilogy Ever and nothing will ever come close to it not even Harry Potter, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Game of Thrones, House of a Dragon, The Witcher, The Chronicles of Narnia, John Wick, Marvel, DC, The Matrix, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, The Mummy, Jumanji, James Bond, The Godfather, Godzilla, King Kong, Alien, Predator, The Terminator, The Exorcist and Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. There I then thought that you guys can discuss all of your opinions on the J. R. R. Tolkien books, and the Peter Jackson movies, talk about the advantages and disadvantages that they have over and below each other, read all the books fully and analyze them and why they work so well, watch the theatrical and extended editions of the whole movies and analyze them and why they are perfect adaptations, explain the very few references and similarities that they have to The Holy Bible itself (such as the three Christ figures Aragorn, Frodo, and Gandalf) and probably the film versions of it, Tolkien's World War 1 experiences during the Battle of the Somme in the trenches that actually changed the course of history, his catholic and religious beliefs, and why nothing in general will ever come close the GOAT in general. You and the other youtubers should also do this thing where you should also analyze all three parts of the story (Part One: The Fellowship of the Ring, Part Two: The Two Towers, and Part Three: The Return of the King) but after each part is over you will all take breaks and vote which youtuber should have a one on one interview with which member of the cast and crew of the trilogy, and then you will all go in separate rooms with a different cast and crew member, plan out what questions you all should ask, change cast and crew members with each break along with different questions, increase the lengths just like the increase within all three parts of The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, and then when each break is over then talk about what answers that you all got for the interviews. By The Way, you should also share this with many of the other youtubers who love Middle-earth in general and should plan with them on how you could improve on this comment such as inviting so much more youtubers who also love it a lot, and that I didn't add on this comment earlier on, discussing this with Peter Jackson and the Tolkien family and their views on them since they aren't the very best of friends (and that fact that Christopher Tolkien, and Simon Tolkien didn't appreciate it), and should also do the same thing with Peter Jackson's The Hobbit film trilogy (2012-14) and doing the same thing that I explained earlier with LOTR, such as also discussing about the score, and the songs such as The Song of the Lonely Mountain (Extended Version) , by Neil Finn, I See Fire, by Ed Sheeran, and The Last Goodbye, by Billy Boyd, (and also discussing again what it was like for some of the cast members that are dead now such as Barry Humphries who played as the Great Goblin and again this does not involve Ian McKellen) but also to mostly discuss why they weren't very good adaptations of the novel. The real reason for this also is to basically change many different peoples' opinions and views on this amazing work of literature especially since it's the 20th Anniversary of these films, because not all Christians view it as a masterpiece, because I am a huge fan of LOTR too, but also because I'm also one who is a Christian believer, and I have witnessed other Christians not viewing it as a masterpiece that tells the story of good vs evil, since it shown as something completely underrated since people on the internet want a lot of realism, when in reality it actually invented the high fantasy genre, defined the fantasy genre, and it even made John Ronald Reuel Tolkien himself (who is of course the author of LOTR and the creator of Middle-earth) become what he is now known as the godfather or the father of modern fantasy that is of course now shown in both the 20th Century with his own books, and the 21st Century with the Peter Jackson adaptations. But also because the movies in my opinion destroy the stuff that Hollywood mainly shows in their films specifically the modern movies that are made today, even if these films are maybe sometimes considered to be not as good as their original work by Tolkien (especially involving around Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy), or if they are even usually considered to be Massive Hollywood, Blockbuster, Action & adventure movies, and also have really epic and really well crafted moments in them such as the large and huge amount of set pieces, the brilliant use practical effects, the incredible and awesome use computer generated effects when it was something made 20 years ago as well, large-scale warfare, six genres which is just everything that is ever put on the film director's bucket list in the three films such as action, adventure, romance, comedy, and horror that was just managed to be put altogether in a whole fantasy setting, and awesome character moments and awesome moments of really well-crafted character development in each of those three films as well. I would also really love your comparisons between the books and the movies and which one you think is the one that is considered to you to actually be better according to your specific opinion on that story. I also really like how you use Star Wars words before 'Gandalf', such as 'Darth' for example.

Great overview. Here are my top ten, assuming it is the year TA 3018 when Frodo sets out, in order from worst to least bad: 1. The 'Wraith World.' Denied the gift of Eru (death), the mortal plane of existence is a faded mess. You are constantly fed the visions of Sauron until your will is utterly his to command. Note that this applies only to mortals who claim a great ring of power forged by Sauron, or who have faded due to a wound from a Morgul blade. 2. The Houses of Lamentation. Possibly also the Unseen or Wraith World or some other unknown magic-induced state where your Fëa is torn from your body while Sauron taunts you. 3. UnGoliant's lair. Where this sits in the ranking depends on the state of UnGoliant by the events of the War of the Ring. If UnGoliant is still alive, I'd rank it here. Ungoliant's lair is probably located in some deep, unexplored crevice in the forgotten southern continent, far away from the events of the War of the Ring. Even if diminished or gone, this place would probably remain pretty horrible for a long time. If still alive, I think I'd rather be a prisoner of the Dark Tower. 4. The Throne room of Barad-Dur. I'm of the opinion that this throne room would probably be fairly beautiful. It's always represented as something out of one of Morgoth's dominions, but I'd like to think Sauron, as a student of Aule, would prefer fine Mithril crafts for his own personal space, even if these are set in imposing architecture for best effect. Plus it probably contains one of the Palentirs. Still, Sauron is here, so you are likely to have a very bad time of things if he's feeling in the right mood. 5. The Dungeons of Barad-Dur and Minus Morgol (tied). Besides the usual bodily tortures, insanity and even necromancy await unfortunate prisoners here. 6. The Underdeeps of Ultmno. Supposedly these deepest pits were not destroyed by the Valar. They may still be intact and harbor some forgotten experiments of Morgoth or even possibly some creatures of the Void that followed Morgoth into Arda. 7. The Underdeeps of Moria. Here lies not only the Balrog but also the nameless things. The nameless things were also likely experiments of Morgoth, part of Arda's initial corruption, or Void creatures escaped from Ultmno. 8. Sauron's Eastern throne in Rhun. Tolkien mentions in passing that Sauron had strongholds for his own personal use in lands outside of North-Eastern Middle Earth. It's likely he spent a significant amount of time somewhere to the east and likely built up his own physical base of power there. No doubt, his preferred eastern throne was a place of worship and fear. 9. Sauron's personal abode in Dol Guldur. Although by 3018, this was now vacated by Sauron, it's likely repurposed as a chief residence for the Witch King or Kamul. 10. Shelob's Lair. There was a tunnel mentioned that the Hobbits rightly avoided. This tunnel probably led down to Shelob's primary resting cave. (Notable mention:) Darkest glens of Fangorn and Mirkwood, the last desert in the east where the Were-Worms reside (possibly a tall tale told to Bilbo, but knowing Tolkien, there's probably some truth to it), and the lairs inhabited by Giants, Drakes, Trolls, Wargs, Vampires, Werewolves, Ape-men, and sea creatures.

The Unseens or as you call it Wraith World is not a terrible place by default. It is only a torment to those who are under the influence of Sauron´s dark magic. For example, Glorfindel also "lives" in the Unseen, which is one reason why the Nazgul fear him so much.

I’m curious how Isengard remained standing with all the subterranean work going on practically underneath it. When the ents flooded it, the soil should have turned to mud then the weight of the structure would have caused the mud to collapse into the voids created by the excavations created by Saruman’s industrial operations. You may be part of a caravan that is set to bring tribute to Mordor, only to be ambushed by other Easterlings that seek to deliver said tribute themselves. Sauron holds immense influence but no effective control over these peoples, he cannot force them to coexist peacefully. Furthermore, tribes that rebel against Sauron may consider you a valid target as well. This means that travelling the region is like travelling the Arabian desert under the Ottoman empire... formally, everyone is a citizen of the same state, but in reality, anyone may decide to cut your throat while paying lip service to the higher authorities. Travelling without loot may not save you either, because the most precious resource the East has to offer cannot be left at home: slaves. You may end up on the plantations of Nurn or become a slave soldier, forced to fight other Easterlings or Gondorians. -The outermost East: Very murky, but I think it´s possible that the birthplace of all humans has been defiled and is still infested by temples in which Morgoth was worshipped
