That comes down to the way they fell to their corruption. The Balrogs traded their purity for physical might and battle prowess, while Sauron and Morgoth gave it up for the power to dominate and control others, including the Balrogs (although it's a rather moot point whether or not they actually controlled the Balrogs directly, as their interests were aligned). In a 1v1 fight, the Balrogs would likely be able to destroy even Morgoth, but it would never come to that due to the nature of Morgoth's (and to a lesser extent, Sauron's) power. Which isn't to say Sauron was a pushover physically, he stood half again as tall as the tallest elf and it took the two greatest fighters of their time to bring him down, during which they tragically died.

I realize there is only so much you can do, but personally, I think it would have been perfect if they had a cut-scene introducing the Balrog and incorporating some mission where you lure it out into the path of the enemy and use it to your advantage, or along those lines. Going up against it with carnan really took away the size factor and made the Balrog much less intimidating and just another enemy to deal with. Nevertheless, i know i likely stand alone with my opinion, because most people just want more action and battles.

'Name him not!' said Gandalf, and for a moment it seemed that a cloud of pain passed over his face, and he sat silent, looking old as death. 'Long time I fell,' he said at last, slowly, as if thinking back with difficulty. 'Long I fell, and he fell with me. His fire was about me. I was burned. Then we plunged into the deep water and all was dark. Cold it was as the tide of death: almost it froze my heart.' 'Deep is the abyss that is spanned by Durin's Bridge, and none has measured it,' said Gimli. 'Yet it has a bottom, beyond light and knowledge,' said Gandalf. 'Thither I came at last, to the uttermost foundations of stone. He was with me still. His fire was quenched, but now he was a thing of slime, stronger than a strangling snake 'We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. They were not made by Durin's folk, Gimli son of Glóin. Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day. In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazaddûm: too well he knew them all. Ever up now we went, until we came to the Endless Stair.' 'Long has that been lost,' said Gimli. 'Many have said that it was never made save in legend, but others say that it was destroyed.'

Humble Jumble I imagine you are comparing it to the film and not the story. The one in the film is truly massive, and much larger than the one in the book.
@magma26807 жыл бұрын
idk, i'd say the one in the movies is pretty fair enough, a balrog is just about bigger than the largest elephants IRL , and they're pretty fkn tall :/
@AbbdonDespoiler7 жыл бұрын
They're not that tall. They should be around 14-18 feet tall, not like in the movie.
@ГлебКаменский-я7й6 жыл бұрын
Well, it took undead ranger posessed by high elf spirit and another maia to take Tar-Goroth down, so he actually is stronger than the one Gandalf fought.

So the demon of flame decided to willingly fight over a frozen lake? Isn't that like Superman fighting over a vat of kryptonite? Like he could have just denied battle and went elsewhere to do his shit. He could have joined Sauron. He could have went and burned down Carnan's home. He literally could have done anything else, but he decided to engage over his biggest weakness. I cannot abide this level of stupidity -_-

Does anybody know what the balrog said to talion curios what it said
@mgeldarion587 жыл бұрын
Since it's Balrog, it might be talking on Melkorin, a Valarin dialect used by Morgoth and his followers, and later used by Sauron to create the Black Speech, for example "Ghashizik" - "ghash" means "fire" on Black Speech, I don't know how to translate "izik", but I think the whole word means "Burn!". But I have no clues for "Onguk nakhan".
@cerberusrex52757 жыл бұрын
I think the ''Onguks Nakhan'' part has something to do with END or ENDING. I say this as Sauron said something similar to Celebrimbor and the she-elf during the final boss fight, and the subtitles read ''Come to your end''. So the Balrog might have said ''I'll end you!'' or something like that. Not sure though....havent heard of an ''melkorian'' dialect of valarin either....

Gandalf is "technically" a Balrog himself, just a pure non evil one. Basically the Balrogs are like fallen/corrupted angels while Gandalf is an angel in ths LOTR universe. Edit: Also Gandalf fought the Balrog of Moria (Durins Bane) for TEN days strait from thr lowest dungeon to the highest peak on the mountain.
