The Nemesis System took a truly miraculous turn in this game. The wide variety of orc commanders was so much fun. I made some orc that pissed me off go absolutely insane. I got bored of him eventually so I killed him. then when I was in the middle of killing a commander, he pops up looking like a mutated freak. So I killed him again in a new way. Then I found him again later on. Then again. Then again. Each time he kept coming back stronger and stronger. It made it to a point where he was virtually unkillable outside of explosive and poison barrel damage.

Summary: It's a huge game but it's rinse and repeat all the way through in a grind that is very boring at times. Sure you do get the odd fun battle, some of them are truly epic and enjoyable but they are few and far between. Most of the time you just interrogate an orc to get intel on the weakness of a captain then exploit that in a fight and either kill or recruit the captain, thats basically 80% of the game. The story is incredibly disjointed, you are literally thrust into some battles and the second you complete the objective the game interrupts you with a cut scene despite the fact you are in the middle of a huge fight against maybe 20 orcs. After the cut scene ends you are either somewhere else or every orc has mysteriously vanished, this kills any immersion you may have had. The characters are also bland and boring, it's almost like it's from another game as you don't feel like you are playing the same story that is going on. The whole game felt like a big box containing a lot of mini games with the biggest one being the captain killing (nemesis system) other mini games include using the eye of sauron to unlock fast travel location, another very highly used game is the old faithful kill 10 orcs by "insert death type here" before the timer runs out, another is being ambushed...you get the idea, it just repeats these all the time and if you find it hard buy some loot boxes. It's not terrible, it's real fun at times but to get the entire game it's £80 and am sorry but it's not even worth half that price.

The reward for me in the game is the story progression, and I liked it. I was hooked from the first game and wanted to continue the second, and the story did not disappoint. I finished the main game and I enjoyed the story, seems you did not play the game enough to even see the story.

FEAR 1 and 2, One Unit Whole Blood, and Tron 2.0 from GOG, if you have not done so already Monolith Still get a Royalty Cut *Direct* from CD Projekt on those Games even after all these Years!! so you still support them, and you get a Van-Full of their *Finest* Games for less Money than you need for some of the bloody LootCrates in this one!! Just a Shame those Bastards at Fox wouldn't allow NOLF to get Re-Released, so their very Finest Game is, sadly, still in Limbo. its a better deal than even the GOTY version of this...thing...is ever going to be!

I actually really enjoyed this game I'd admit the beginning is a bit boring but it gets a lot of fun once u start unlocking the good stuff. For example you later are able call in a dragon for you to ride and get to places faster while also burning everything in your way. While doing the big battles it's so cool to swoop down and just burn a line through their army. Also later on you put on a new ring and actually become a ring wraith without carabrimbor. This gives you new abilities for example you can resurrect people you've killed. Let's say you're fighting a group of enemies and killed like 15 of them in one area you can activate it and all of them will get back up and already be on your team. Also if your captains die in war you can revive them but they can't level up anymore. It gets really cool and fun to play

To be fair, I just finished the first game (again), and when you understand the mechanics, the first one is a breeze too. I think it was just the novelty that made me like it, and the odd brawl vs 4 elite captains that gave the idea of a hard game. But once you achieve Jesus status with the 20 seconds unlimited executions, it's mind numbingly easy.

Okay im gonna respond to some points you made - (Some Spoilers) 1. If you choose to spam attack on a group of 30 scrubs then you can, those of us with more than 2 brain cells chain executions and actually use the skills & mounts in the game for a more entertaining experience, also go do that in the harder difficulty you'll get melted. Early on in this footage you can see you clearly dont have a clue how to use ground executions or anything other than swinging your sword, i think thats on you. 2. Game looks & sounds great i agree, also on a 1070. 3. In my 20 odd hours so far ive maybe got stuck once or twice for a brief moment, dont see your issue with the movement its very fluid. Im using a controller which may be a lot better & ive not had any moments where ive not been able to do what i wanted when surrounded. 4. You also sound conflicted, you slate the fortress assault but go on to say you had epic battles and you are 'basically' Legolas, how is that not a selling point lol? *EDIT* - Online Conquests (Both friendly & ranked) are super fun, i had a great time on discord with my mate streaming us raiding each others fortress via steam to one another & then working on new captains & defences afterwards. 5. Are you not also going to pick up on any of the side missions? All the online revenge missions, missions you send your orcs on, the Balrog fight? All the side collectibles the open rooms & side missions from Celebrimbors past etc etc, i could go on theres loads. 6. 100% agree on the loot crates, i didnt even see them until a fair way in there is no point in purchasing them they are not needed. 7. Finally, the game is killing and working with orcs...the first one was, what were you expecting from this game? Did you want to be flying in space with machine guns? Its lord of the rings! Its also not going to follow the main stories, i wasnt mad for this storyline but i was by no means bored of it, the great cut scenes kept me intrigued enough. *EDIT* - After now completing the game i can confirm the ending is sick. really brings the whole game together! 8. Personally you just sound mad as if you were expecting something else, this isnt a review its just your one sided opinion on the game. I myself love it so felt the need to leave the comment, interested to see what other people think also. Just to add i dont think this game is 10/10 GOTY material but it doesnt deserve some of the hate its getting.

Well most of us if not all are here for his personal opinion because he's good at illustrating the good and bad things with games. I love how honest he is and that he is not a sellout like most. As mentioned I agree with him on some parts but not all. I think the combat is dumbed down a lot but not to the extend that it's boring. Sure, you could just spam the left and right mouse button most of the times and get about just fine but you could also make it a lot more exciting by using different keys and combos. He is also partially right about the movement and enviroment. It is at times awkward but not to the extreme extend that he says in the video, not for me at least.

I use literally everything at my disposal and still get melted on nemesis difficulty sometimes. What kind of review channel only reviews one difficulty (I'm guessing easy or normal)? I'm not even a fanboy for this franchise, I'm just annoyed about the misrepresentation of the title.

Hi Mac, I guess you are not playing in the hardest setting are you? I have just a couple of hours in (still in act I) and I have died dozen of times. The combat with the trash mobs is, as you said, spamfest but the capitans, oh boy... Another complete game. I think that is how it is supposed to be, you can easily clear the grunts but for the captains you need quite a bit of strategy. Not to mention that at least in my game the captains are 3-5 lvls above me. They take all my hp with 3 hits and you can only save yourself from death once . Basically if I don't get the weakness beforehand it is very very difficult to win a fight against more than one captain. Is it worth a buy? In my opinion it is if you are a big LOTR fan. The combat is the same as Shadow of Mordor, the Nemesis system is way way better, the graphics and the music are amazing. The variety on the orc captains is amazing. The story is OK, of course it is not as good as LOTR. If you liked SoM this is a great sequel that improved on every aspect of the previous game except the controls/combat. The loot-box system? As you said not even worth checking it. Just ignore.

Trouble is I do everything unscripted, I think it's more real to do that rather than use bullet points, I play the games virtually none stop until that moment when I know if it's WAB then I shut down the game press record and blurt out my review. This game is amazing and most certainly worth a buy. This was not a review it was just a attack on the game. Yes this game does have loot boxes but they don’t interfere with the game at all. You dont have to buy them and your not forced to buy them. All they do is give you gear or Orks and there’s plenty of both already in the game. I have so much gear I could swim in it and I haven’t purchased a loot box. If your on the fence at least rent it from Redbox or something because your missing out. This game is like the first one but on steroids.

one of the very few times i actually disagree with some of your points. well i completely agree with the loot box part and the story but for the rest i dont know im actually having fun. a lot of it has to do with personal preference of course. i have no issues with the key bindings they are more or less the same as SoM and the gameplay loop while yes it is a bit repetitive its very fun for me and as a result i dont mind the grinding, at least so far 11 hours into the game, maybe down the line i will feel the grind like you. its no game of the year for sure but im really enjoying it so far.

So I actually like this game (though I gave it a 0 on metacritc for the MTs). In the first zone I was killed by a Captain. Came back and killed him. He came back and killed me. It went back and forth. I love how this game gives the Uruk captains the same respawn and (what seems like) nemesis missions against you that you get when they kill you. Ya it's an AC clone spam fest, but the improved nemesis system makes up for it.

Whenever I see a game in steam store or PSN store what puts me off the most is when theres like 50 pieces of DLC available or when there's like 6 different editions. I want a complete game for 60 bucks otherwise I'm just gonna wait until GOTY edition comes out and is like 50% off. I don't even understand the mentality of people who buy the "super platinum deluxe" editions of games for insane high prices. Also, fuck microtransactions in a buy-to-play game, I can't believe that the general gaming public is largely ok with this. It has absolutely no place in a full price title. The game should be 15 bucks if they want the microtransactions to be somewhat justifiable. Anyway, it's a game I would have pre-ordered but the publisher fucked up so I'll just buy the cheapo version in a year.

In the Zero Punctuation review of Shadow of Mordor Yathzee says that "the orcs have more personality traits than the character we're supposed to be rooting for."

my fingers are like a roll of toilet paper and I cannot use either, I use arrow keys instead. The issue is that key bindings are limited, so tgfh gives more then enough. Though honestly the problem is solved if you buy a 7 button mouse. Even better with alt configuration mouse.

26hrs in and only 57% complete. It is pretty grindy but I've been having a blast. I do like how they force you to make choices with some of the skills having upgrades that do different things. You can pause the game and switch it up on the fly to adapt which is nice. Story is a bit meh, but the orks do make this game!

I've been waiting so long for another lotr game to enjoy because I just love the story and the universe Tolkien's created. It's a gamer's market. There's an abundance of fun, so quality of fun and the sheer amount of time you can spend and continue to have fun matter when it comes to deciding what to buy. I have to call BS on the Batman claim of spamming left click to win. Just bought the game on sale, 25 hours in. Working on third fortress capture. If you attempt left click spam in Shadow of War your basic attack will be blocked by any shield, and you’ll be counter hit to death. Any large enemy will deflect your basic and simply smash you over the head until dead. Ranged units will interrupt your swings until you die. Dual wielded units will spin combo you out of your attacks until you die. Even ranged captains will just animation spam away from you and kill you. Now take the egregious claim of 30+ enemies of varying types, and you can see Mack’s claim of spam left click to win, is a disingenuous lie. Always take Mack’s claims with a grain of salt. He often lies and twists the truth, especially if he’s bias about supporting the developer of the review, such as Total War titles, or hating a studio or publisher, like WB. Mack’s bias and lies is why I’ll occasionally watch a one off review, but will never subscribe. At least IGN is open about their biases.

Mack, if you like Lord of the Rings and want a good game, the best is probably a total conversion mod by the name of “The Last Days of the Third Age” for Mount and Blade: Warband. You can find it on Warband’s steam workshop. I’d highly recommend if you haven’t already played.

Back in my young gaming years money was really scarce. My $60 was reserved for the real big hitters in gaming. Now that I'm older and have a job, I can afford things now. $60 is still no drop in the hat, but it's considerably easier to swallow. Now I can let loose a bit on my purchases, maybe I can spend $60 here and there for the big 3rd parties and not just the big exclusives. I went into buying this game with that mindset, and let me tell you right now, I'm going right back to being stingy with my $60 again.

I was very against this game for the microgambling until I actually got to play it. I feel like your review is feeding into the fake news kind of channel because your telling people what they want to hear. Like myself, legitimately wanted this to fail. However in reality it's a glitch free, graphically stunning, immersive, Lord of the rings spin off. If you're not a LOTR fan skip it shure. If your marginal, liked the movies, and like open world games rent it at redbox. It may become your game of the year. Also if you play on easy difficulty like the review here you miss out on 70% of the experience. Normal is challenging, and nemesis (hard) is a real ass kicking. The game revolves around the difficulty of random encounters mixed with random challenges and then random world events jacked on top. If your on easy you may as well fall asleep while holding x to win. But if you play as intended you may be in a deep battle with one target orc when he suddenly gets backup from another you've never ever seen just so ten minutes later your barely holding onto life when a random wild Dragon shows up to attack everyone. God help you when that orc beats you by a hair and then literally breaks your favorite weapon or kidnaps your favorite orc follower furthermore filling your hatred and lust for revenge against a completely random encounter that may or may not happen. That's what this game is about.

You mention steam reviews, but fail to mention it's currently 80+ in those ratings. The only negative reviews are those who have like 2 hours in game hours and clearly say they are giving this game a negative review for lootbox system. Yes lootboxes suck, but as you mentioned, no one needs to buy it in this game (unlike swbf2). And none of you snowflakes had this reaction when Overwatch actually came out with lootcrates. And Mack, you didn't even criticise that part in your 'overwatch wab' as much as you did in this. At least in shadow of war you can get legendary items in game by looting enemies. Progression is not limited to lootboxes only.

Good review Mac, it's good that WB wasn't afraid to give you a copy. If you want to make the game more difficult, play on the hardest difficulty and turn the counter prompts off. Makes it more enjoyable having to actually see when the orcs are attacking instead of relying on a flashing button prompt
