Summary It's becoming more and more common that I see games with hefty price tags that lack any significant content, this game however lacks pretty much any content at all save for a few fetch quests and boring rep grinds. It's sad that for £50 all you do is sail around a pretty empty sea hoping to find other players so you can attack them, yes that bit is fun for a while but after 7 or 8 hours it gets tedious. Whats the point of fighting if they respawn back on their ship 30 seconds later, ok sink their ship, they then respawn on an island near by with ammo replenished so if you were involved in a three ship battle the first ship sunk will easy rejoin with full ammo and sink one of the other ships. It's sad that a game that looks and sounds great can be so shallow and dull, where are the Ai ships? where are the escort quests? where are the larger ships? Why can't we sail the ghost ship on death for a given time terrorising other ships, maybe sailing in a mist, it would be awesome. I would love ship progression, the whole point of spotting enemy ships at distance is so you can decide to fight or flee, in this game it's fight all the time as there are only two ship types. Such a missed opportunity. Lazy talent-less thinking is ruining yet another potential GOTY idea, I wonder if devs today have actually grew up on video games or they just took it as a career choice much like an atheist may decide to become a vicar for the company house and pension plan.

For £50 you get - 3 mission types. - 2 boats to choose from: the 3-4 man galleon or the 1-2 man sloop. - 4 outfit sets: Admiral, Sea dog, Bilge rat, Sovereign each set has 3 tiers tier 2 and 3 requiring X level with said mission giver. Same applies to weapons but they have 2 tiers. - Minor differences between outfit tiers, E.G the tier 2 Sovereign hat is the exact same as the tier one but is a slightly different colour with a different coloured feather. - No character customization: All characters are randomly generated and all the player does is pick what one they want, this is permanent so if you decide you don't like the look over all you have to delete the character and lose all progress to pick a new one. - A "fort" raid which if you are able to do without other people around can be easily done with 2 people, most likely soloed as well, rewarding 8K -Minimum- if not double (this varies each time). - A huge open world with less than 10 ships on the whole map making it seem quite empty. - Spammy melee combat where blocking is pretty pointless. - Ship customization costing a minimum of 70K gold so for new players you're forced to choose either save up for one piece of ship customization (Sails, body paint or figure head) or buying an outfit for yourself. It's fun with friends for a few hours without a doubt but it has no sustainability, the pvp is often unrewarding as most people interested in it have zero loot so after a fight you've used up your supplies for literally zero gain. You're basically grinding for the sake of grinding, there's minimal cosmetics right now (which will obviously be updated) but you can't help but think where the budget went. Yes it looks pretty but that's literally it, minimal cosmetics, simple ship and melee combat and three mission types. What. Did. The. Budget. Go. Into? And why the hell is this 50 quid?

Baha, it's 100$AUD Here, which, is around 20$+ more than the actual USD conversion rate, the gut's they have to take a F2P quality game and ramp the price up to 100$AUD is disgusting. Not sure how the price is in other currencies though (Other than Quid and USD), what suck's though, is State of Decay 2 is probably going to be the same 100$AUD deal, but I love SoD so I will probably buy that :) (After a Mack review of course) Also yes I know use the free two-week trial Xbox Game Pass.. Can i just say that as someone who has lived on a boat for 3 years and sailed around the South Pacific Ocean that the water looks absolutely amazing in this game. I cant say much for the rest of the game but just watching it gave me flashbacks of sailing offshore and that is EXACTLY what it looks like.

Sea of Thieves is still the best game on the market in many ways. Blackwake looks like it's almost entirely a PVP ship battle simulator, Sea of Thieves should be looked at as more of a "Pirate Legends" simulator (that kraken is really disappointing though). Blackwake is all about teamwork, Sea of Thieves is more about goofing around on a ship. If I'm going to "role play" as a Pirate, Sea of Thieves looks much, much better. That said, it's definitely overpriced at the moment.

Yes indeed, that one. The controls were a bit shit, it took time to getting used to. I think walking forward was with mouse? dear lord ..... But you can rebind it. Now about sailing. You had to set your sails to the max and the ship would sail at it's max speed, depending on the wind and wind's direction. It's really easy when you learn the ropes. But that game is really something special if you can get over the - it's old. I will list few things that you can do in it: Open world is like in mount and blade. You can attack civil ships, pirate ships, navy ships. Hell you can even go to a port and start opening fire on ships there or even the port itself. You can buy better ships, upgrade your own ships, capture enemy ships, command more than one ship by placing your general there. Sell different goods for different prices - economy system. You could even invest (thought it was basic). Go to islands, do quests. I loved the ship combat. There are different ammo. Some kills crew, some attacks sails, some damages ship itself more. If you strict their sails, you could see them getting damaged, with holes and that slowed them down. You could board the ship and start ship boarding battle. It was so.... open - just like mount and blade. It's a bit dated in some aspects. I would loved if somebody remade it with proper controls and just everything advanced even further. That game probably needs manual to fully understand every feature haha. Still, by immersion factor blows most modern open world games. In that game you naturally became stronger. You couldn't just go in at take out tons of enemies or big ships at the start of the game. You had to have companions and build your small navy. Just realistic. Okay, I am stopping now.

Went in tonight and loads of people playing it, lots of full servers. it's had a big bug fix patch as the dev was actually in that stream I showed, the game was bugged and he apologised and then released a patch a week later :)

Even the part where you frantically carry your loot to your ship from a fort can be bypassed. You just have to beat the fort, abandon your ship, and hide the key somewhere. Then come back and it'll be there since the servers are persistant. Then you can get all the treasure at your leisure.

In the Alpha the most fun thing was running into other crews while treasure hunting, steal their treasure, guard yours. Having two or three crews running around the same island looking for treasure and the ensuing sea battle for that treasure. What a blast. Sadly it only happened once and it seems like they never heard the massive feedback to have more ships on the same server. And of course there was no fortress so this really was the only way to get the gold. You also could unlock the blunderbuss and different instruments so there was a little bit of progression there. Once again the biggest problem with Sea of Thieves is that Salt exists. And Blackwake I guess.

Sea of Thieves has working Multiplayer, it does everything they said it would do, and it only costs $10 to try it for a month (which is about as long as most people played Destiny 2 anyway).

Sign up for Game Pass in November (last year they had a sale letting you try it for $1) and you'll get to try it after the first six months of patches for next to nothing. By that time they'll have Forza Horizon 4, Crackdown 3, and State of Decay 2 on Game Pass as well. Getting to play all of these games for $10 is a steal.

I guarantee that Microsoft needed more official exclusives forcing them to make it a premium $60 game and it make their Game Pass actually worth it. Because they only have like 4-5 games on it. Also, you are looking at it as full pvp, is not, they have enough ships to encounter one from time to time, but the number one objective is doing the quests, and try not to get ripped by other pirates when cargo full of chests

I perhaps didn't state my self well. I generally agree with Mac because we have extremely similar tastes in games. I played the game, as I stated, before watching the WAB. I thought the following: Its empty. There is not a ton to do It's repetitious Its charming It has potential It's over priced. Then I watched WAB and well... ^ I'm glad you like the game. I am still on the fence on it concerning everything but the price, which is entirely too high for the amount of content currently in the game.

I don't think I would say it's complete garbage. It's something that I tend to call a 'Dad Game'. Meaning its something to be played in quick bursts for fun social experiences in a relatively child friendly environment. The emergent experiences I have had in this game have stuck with me, and it's a solid foundation for a great game, I think. However. The amount of content does not justify a 60 dollar asking price. What is there is fantastic, I love this game, but is it worth a buy? Not at the current price. No. It's worth a free trial on the game pass and then waiting for a sale IMO. Which is a shame, but whats there is so good. Kind of like Elite Dangerous.

When BF launched i was all over the forums screaming that they needed to take that and give it full mmo scale, massive sea with hundreds of Islands, clans could buy one and fortify, even earn revenue from making it a trade hub. Trade lanes could be attacked but trade ship npc would be tough enough to hold out for 10 mins, giving players enough time to get there and defend if not too far. Islands themselves raidable, shit could be stolen.Full upgraded islands would take a full fleet of players to breakthrough and land. Massive central land mass filled with secrets, loot, bosses etc and all pvp enabled. Massive storm surges, enemy boarding...Options are limitless... ...And they give us this small scale shite?

I am not disappointed by any means. If you set your expectations low and don't look at any sort of pre release content for a game then there is no way you can be disappointed. I did the same thing with Destiny, even with it being as flawed as it was, I had expected it to be as little as possible and the little bit of content found in it satisfied me since it went beyond my expectations. Just think about it, way back when(whenever you as a person think of gaming as reaching its peak in quality) there were no overhyped game trailers and such, people just looked at a game in the store and if they thought the concept was cool they bought it. The AAA companies behind these games are just as much at fault as us because we like to look into our games before we buy them now days to make sure that our investment will pay off in the form of entertainment. When we do these things however, it ends up spoiling the game for us as the consumers and that is why I think a large majority of gamers are dissatisfied with the current state of gaming. Then again I am just a fucking idiot so I might be wrong lmao just my thoughts.

"Played"/tested for 10 days, with different crews, friends and randoms, and by myself. Then stopped and uninstalled. Every word here is true. terrible money grab. Quick update for you Mack; we're over 2 years after release now, there's still hardly what could be considered content. There have been dozens of updates now, and a lot has been added to the game, but there's still just no actual, tangible content. Sure there's more to do, but there are plenty of times the game can feel just as dead/boring as it did on release, and at the end of the day, everything you do in the game will only ever get you a bit of gold to spend on cosmetics, and nothing else. Still no progression whatsoever. There's now a 3-player ship. The red barrels now have a fuse on them that you can light, so it goes off after 5 seconds (instead of having to shoot it yourself), the wheel, capstan, and masts on a ship can be destroyed, there's tons of new cannonballs (chain shot to take masts down, curseballs that apply various effects on hit like disabling the steering wheel or the cannons, putting the sails up, dropping the anchor, turning the crew drunk, etc), ships and players can be lit on fire, the fire will actually spread across a ship, destroy the masts, etc, eventually put a single hole into the ship (which immediately extinguishes all the fire on the bottom deck), there's harpoons on ships allowing you to reel in loot and do quick turns around rocks/islands, etc. There's also new world content like a megalodon and skeleton ships (alongside the pre existing kraken), which are honestly just annoying as fuck after the first two times you face them, because they always get in the way just as you're trying to get from A to B (especially kraken, which takes control away from the player). And a new area in the south east featuring earthquakes and volcanoes. Tall tales have also been added, a series of story quests that have some pretty cool puzzles and will eventually even take you beyond the map border (normally when you go to the border, the sea turns red and your ship starts taking damage). That's just a bit of a summary; a lot more has been added, but there just still isn't any sort of progression. You still start every session with the same ship, the same worthless amount of supplies, on the same equal footing as everyone else. All the equipment is the same (cosmetic only). The only main difference with two years ago is that back then I grinded the game for 2 weeks to get the 100k for a green ship hull, and now loot is so abundant you can get 100k per session. I hop on the game once every half year or so to see what's new, and I'm done exploring all the new content within an hour or two every time. Like yeah cool, they added fishing! Here's the process of fishing; 1. Throw the line out. 2. Wait for a fish to bite. 3. Fish will pull in random directions. Just push your rod the other way. There's no urgency here, no depth to it, no penalty if you fuck up. 4. After pushing and pulling on your rod for a while (around 10-15 seconds), the fish will tire out. 5. REEL, REEL YOU BASTARD, PULL THAT FISH IN. 6. After 5 or so seconds of reeling, the fish recovers and you loop back to step 3. 7. After looping through steps 3-6 about 3 or 4 times, you finally have your fish. It takes fucking 40 seconds to a minute to catch a fish. And they're absolutely fucking useless; you can sell them for a pittance, if you want any sort of valuable fish you have to specifically look for them around shipwrecks, skull clouds, etc. And sure, it's a free source of healing if you're on a long journey anyway.... But you can also just cannon a crewmate or two at an island as you're passing by, have them slaughter the local wildlife (everything dies in 1 hit anyway now), and they'll return in less than a minute with their inventories stocked full of chicken/pork/snake meat. They heal just as much as the fish do anyway. Then there's cooking, oh boy the depth you'll find there. 1. Dump a fish or piece of meat into the pan. 2. Wait a couple minutes. 3. Pick it back up. Only 1 piece per pan of course, and each ship only has 1 pan. So if you have nothing to do for 10 minutes, you can get enough healing supplies to last your crew one minute worth of combat. NICE.

it's almost like a pretty tech demo. i watched a lot of gameplay back in the beta and some youtubers made it look really fun with friends. there's a lot of cool stuff on there and i love the way the sailing works. they had the ground level finished for an amazing game, but they forgot to fill it with content. the islands seem to be pretty small and combat is bare. it looks like it's almost always more fun and relaxing on the sea. there should be lush green jungles to explore, towns that feel alive with both players and npc's and much more mission variety. i'm sad that two pirate games are being released and neither interest me. i just want a good pirate rpg with a strong focus on single player content. or maybe a game where you can settle on islands and build up or play as a pirate if you want to. i'm sure with updates this game could get much better, but i'll just keep waiting for the game i want

Alright just gonna review Mack's review. But beforehand, I do want to say that the game's launch is unacceptable. And even now the game is still barely playable. 1. Mack, you say that the cannon loading isn't realistic but then you get mad that you have to track shots??? Shooting a few cannons to determine the distance to target is a real life tactic. Be more consistent with your points. 2. Yes the sailing is simple, it's an obviously cartoony game. But there is some depth to sail adjustments for better turning and drifting the ship with the anchor that you didn't touch on. 3. "You either dig up chests or catch pigs. That's it." Did you forget about the entire Order of Souls faction or????? 4. Also stop the Blackwake comparisons are pretty cringy. They're very different games. One's a team arena sim style game. The other one is a cartoony multiplayer open world treasure hunting game. Other than that, yeah this review has been pretty on point with my major complaints. Well done Mack. A lot of things. It is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. Sound design and visuals aesthetics are perfect. This is for sure one of the best looking games you can buy. In regards to content, the quests you go on are somewhat tedious if you're alone but if you have friends (or a good pub crew) it can be crazy fun. Sure this game has its up times and down times but I've had some of the most fun ever in a video game while fucking around with my pals in Sea of Thieves. I don't expect it to vibe with everyone, especially the likes of Mack, but for those who enjoy a social gaming experience this is really one of the best. Interacting with other crews (violently or peacefully) is almost always a lot of fun. Admittedly, shooting cannons at each-other usually won't win a fight fast. But there are a lot of other creative tools you can use to take down opposing ships. The beautiful scenery and organically unfolding adventures punctuated by bouts of action and social fun with other crews is really what makes this game shine. Furthermore, don't listen to what Mack said about SoT being a cash grab, it's clearly a passion project for Rare and it is a living game. Rare has plenty of plans to update the game and add more content. Please don't take my last point too seriously, I really don't want to come across as saying "but the game will be great one day!" because it excuses a lot of bullshit that happens in the AAA industry today. The point is that game is GOOD right now! And if the servers weren't fucking busted (because Rare doesn't know how to design an online service properly) I would totally recommend the game.

It's actually a base psychological reality that no human being is capable of being totally objective. Obviously Mack wasn't trying very hard, but he does get "some" slack just for being human like everyone else and having preferences. The review itself is still valuable as long as the reviewer is consistent. If someone consistently hates something that you like, you might find that reviewer's "hate" list more informative than anyone else's list of favorites.

One thing I find a bit boring is how you can only blow holes in the ship. That's the only thing you can damage on it. Imagine being able to damage the sails, the steering mechanism in general, the anchor, damaging canons etc.

So the PvE crowd is asking for an option to opt out of PvP and just do quests AND the PvP crowd is saying they aren't seeing enough players and having enough PvP action. Hopefully Rare hears this and adds a way to make both happy. Maybe split it up or add the option to select a better server that fits playstyle.

Sid Meier's Pirates, POTC/Sea Dogs 2 and Age of pirates/Seadogs: City of abandoned ships still remain the best pirate games to this date. Those are all singleplayer adventure/RPG-ish games so its a little unfair to compare them to this but its kinda sad that no other game have managed to surpass them.

Ya I kind of gathered this based on a vid I saw explaining exactly what you do in the game. I was never really excited for this in the first place. I'm not really into pirates. But after seeing what all you do in the game, it looked really shallow. It basically boils down to doing the same monotonous things (chasing animals, killing skeletons, digging up chests) that don't really have much variation between each mission (All the skeletons look pretty much the same. Not really any unique variety of enemies with different abilities or anything like that) all for the sake of grinding gold for......cosmetics? That's it? The devs tout that all weapons of the same class are equal and there's no getting destroyed by someone who has better gear or weapons. Why? It's a pirate game. If this was something that was trying to be competitive, sure. But it's not. It's a pirate game just to dick around in. Why not have some imbalance? You SHOULD be scared of that guy with the giant warship and full set of gilded weapons. You're a damn pirate. You should expect unfair fights. What do you do after you've sunk hours into getting all the cosmetics you want? What's the point of the grind when it has no progression? Why does defeating a Kraken have no reward? What's the point of a making a pirate game where stealing a ship is nigh impossible because death has such little consequence?

I would say you need to broaden your game library I can add the following quests to educate you if you like. Escort Ai ship from A ---> B Board Ai ship, klill it's crew and steal it's cargo Hunt down the Black Pig enemy Pirate ship last seen bla, bla, bla, Take this cargo to this island and deliver it to blabla (you will be ambushed both at sea and on land when you arrive) I never paused to think for them 4 quests, all off the top of my head, so imagine if I brainstormed with a group of devs for a whole day. Stop defending LAZY development.
