Sick vid. Is that. A power head and what size ?
@daveobsoleteammo4547 Жыл бұрын
Yes , and he makes his own Powerheads . He has a local machine shop make the empty casings for him , and then he adds the rest including a 7.62x54R rifle cartridge for the bang . That cartridge still works fine when he has a deeper dive .
@bodetech43792 жыл бұрын
What did you use for the AJ in the tip of the spear, and explosive head?
@daveobsoleteammo4547 Жыл бұрын
He uses a Powerhead to cause that extra needed damage for a quick clean kill . His are loaded with a 7.62x54R rifle cartridge which will still work fine on his deeper dives .
@hugosuarez51332 жыл бұрын
Nice video as always. Dan, in normal conditions, what is the recommended and the longest distance to shot a fish with your speargun?
@daveobsoleteammo4547 Жыл бұрын
15 feet is stretching it , and 10 or less is preferred . Must be even closer if using a Powerhead , and a Powerhead must hit DEAD AT THE FISH . No glancing shots will work with a Powerhead as it pushes the meat inwards slightly but not enough BANG SPLAT of a hit to make it go off , and yet the spear tip is still pushing forward so it ruins the Powerhead when it bounces off the fish from a slant hit . He has his spear tips made with a pencil point so they will normally still make it through the scales and into the fish at 15 feet .

Hi Dan, are you guys breathing Heliox or Trimix on your deeper 240+ dives?
@joeshields32822 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan you guys kick butt I never miss your videos. That playground you guys have is banging I just wanted to no what you think the best fish is too eat out of all the ones you shoot . I been in the keys and I think mouton and hog fish are better than the gag I would like to know your favorite one's . 🐟
@daveobsoleteammo4547 Жыл бұрын
He has said before that he really likes the Scamp , but he is mostly after Gags 1st and then whatever he still has time to get . On the dives over 150 feet deep he only has about 3-4 minutes MAX bottom time , or he will need to take more decompression stops on the way back up .

@jimmyhoneycutt1 Жыл бұрын
@@daveobsoleteammo4547 the hell you say!
@daveobsoleteammo4547 Жыл бұрын
@@jimmyhoneycutt1 Yes , the 7.62x54R rifle cartridge is a rimmed cartridge so it is easier to make a blank for the casings to fit into . The larger cartridge can be purchased in military ammo that has sealed bullets and sealed primers also so no worries about water ruining your cartridge .
@jimmyhoneycutt1 Жыл бұрын
@@daveobsoleteammo4547 geez man, that's interesting but as a skilled firearms enthusiast and veteran, it surprised me that it was a rifle cartridge. I know nothing about diving, so I guess I ASSUMED it was in the .38-.357 range. Thanks for the info!
@daveobsoleteammo4547 Жыл бұрын
@@jimmyhoneycutt1 The .38 Special and the .357 Magnum have small primers . That makes it harder for a bang stick to work properly . The deeper you go down to fish the more pressure of the water , and by using a large primer rifle cartridge you can be sure there will be plenty of explosive pressure coming out to make your kill on the fish easier . You could also make Powerheads using a 45 Auto cartridge with the large primer but the normal speed of a 45 Auto is around 850fps , and the rifle cartridge will be above 2500fps ( so more explosive power ) . The .38 and .357 would be better used by snorkel users who stay above 100 feet down .

Dude super sad to be honest, spearfishing cant be combined with scuba. It makes it to easy, not even legal in most countries, you might aswell carry waterproof guns next time. Not hating, just pointing out. True dudes wouldn't use scuba

@rhettschools60822 жыл бұрын
Yeah, have to say the same. I am an avid spearo and spearing makes a massive impact on fish populations. We aren’t even allowed guns, only pole-spears. You can still see a difference where access is easy. Hate to think of all the jackasses who are now running out to ruin the local scuba diving spots. One breath, one fish

The AJ's have to be at least 3 feet long to be legal for Commercial fishermen . The fish that are speared taste much better than those thrashing around on a fishing line before they finally get to the surface . Those caught with hook and line fill up with Lactic acid from their lashing about trying to shake the hook .
