Before you say I missed "I Sat By The Ocean" -- it didn't really contribute to the narrative but it does have an excellent hook and melody with some pretty cool harmonized guitars. Honestly, probably the title track. While it’s true that it’s the least QOTSA-sounding song, it had so much impact on me when i listened to the album in order for the first time. Era Vulgaris may be their "worst" album, but goddamn "Make it with chu" is one of the sexiest songs ever made.

“Worst” being good. They’re such a solid band that even their worst albums have great moments

With a very strong discography like QOTSA's, Era Vulgaris being the weakest still means it's a good album. I enjoy that one from start to finish.

It's not bad by any means. I personally like it a lot and I don't see why Lullabies or Villains should be ranked any higher.

Villains is their weakest imo

Okay, I've heard time and time again that the "died on the operating table" story ended up being a lie he told. I'm curious what the final say is on that.

I know you said that "I Sat By The Ocean" didn't really contribute to the narrative, but I think it describes itself as being a symbol of rose-tinted glasses, where Josh speaks to his own shortcomings and mistakes, but just realizes it's him, his mistakes, and a lie he used to cover them up. At the end, he has to face up to what he's hidden from himself and others, and he's left with nowhere to hide. What started out as passing ships in the night, becomes things that violently crash together.

What was so 'uninspired' about Era Vulgaris? I love it. Personally think one of their best records and way better than Clockwork.

It really isn't better than Clockwork. It just isn't.

This is really insightful. I never understood what Josh was drawing on for the writing. I assumed he was living the good life and in a 'victory-lap' era but this explains a lot of why the writing is so strong

QotSA might not have made every track a radio hit... And you might not like every track... But they never fail to kill it. And they step it up every album.

Era Vulgaris has Misfit Love. That alone means it’s a great record.

Maaan. I know Nick made mistakes, but I can't help but think how much better this album would have been with him on it. The records he played on are something special.

You make the best QOTSA related content on this site man. I'd love videos on the early records or their more mixed bag records like Vulgaris and Villains, talking about what goes right and what goes wrong
